Each best list is put through a customized performance analysis with specialized consideration given to our objective & data-driven performance tests. In addition, we consider mattress type, design, materials, value, price, and more.

For our Best Mattress In A Box list, we based our selections on the best-scoring mattresses, according to our battery of testing and formulaic-driven scoring.
Our tests analyze performance across 8 critical factors, including cooling, motion transfer, response time, edge support, sex, pressure relief, off-gassing, and company. In addition, we also test sinkage and bounce (though these are not scoring factors).
Our tests include objective and quantifiable data whenever possible. In addition, we use subjective assessment supported by data to round out our testing process.
Our scores are based on mathematical formulas and equations that utilize inputs from our data-driven testing.
In choosing the best mattresses in a box we looked at the totality of all of our tests, scores, data, and reviews to date. We analyzed this data alongside our established best mattress framework here.
In addition to achieving a high-performance score, all mattresses on this list are vacuum-compressed and shipped in a box.
When selecting the best mattress in a box, we’re looking at a combination of overall scoring performance, shipping in box, and US availability.
To be included within this list, all mattresses:
- Had to be compressed and shipped in a box.
- Had to have a performance score of 9.24 or higher.
- Had to be available for purchase within the USA.
- Latex and latex hybrid mattresses were limited to the top 2 picks by score. Latex has a polarizing feel that some love and some hate. It’s a far more polarizing feel than poly foam or memory foam. See our best latex mattresses list for more mattress choices.

Winkbed Mattress

Best For
- Outstanding performance, above average in every testing category
- Fantastic cooling with the feel of deep sinkage
- 3 available firmness options as well as a plus-sized mattress for heavier sleepers 250+ lbs. (Winkbed Plus)
Considerations
- Deep sinkage may not be ideal for all back or stomach sleepers
- Free returns, but exchanges cost $49
Our Verdict
The WinkBed is a 14″ hybrid mattress and is the #1 best mattress we’ve tested to date. It has a thin Tencel cover with a Euro-style pillow top. The comfort layer includes gel foam, transitional poly foam, and a pocketed coil support base.
The Winkbed is available in three firmness options—Soft (4), Medium Firm (6), Slightly Firm (7). It also comes in an HD version for heavier people, the Winkbed Plus.
In our tests, the Luxury Firm version had deep sinkage and moderate levels of bounce. This gives the mattress a balanced contour, suitable for a wide range of sleeper types, but especially nice for side sleepers. Back or stomach sleepers may be better suited by the Firmer version.
In our performance tests, the Winkbed earned an overall score of 9.79. This score is the highest among any mattress we’ve tested to date.
The Winkbed costs $1,499 for a queen mattress, which is 2% less than the average hybrid. Given its exceptional performance, the Winkbed is the mattress to beat for many sleepers.

Leesa Sapira

Best For
- Exceptionally good cooling performance, with 4″ foam layer and pocketed coil base
- Very high levels of bounce (12.67″)
- Very low levels of motion transfer, 37% less than average
Considerations
- Price is 5% higher than the average hybrid mattress
- Good edge support while lying but sitting edge support could be better
- 100-night trial period is shorter than average (177 nights)
Our Verdict
The Leesa Sapira is a hybrid mattress that is 11″ thick. It has a thin cotton-blend cover and a comfort layer made of poly foam, memory foam, and a transitional support foam. The support base is pocketed coils and support foam.
This mattress has moderate sinkage and very high bounce. If you prefer an active feel and don’t want to feel “stuck” the Leesa Sapira could be a great option.
This mattress comes in a single firmness, medium-firm, with a firmness rating of 6 out of 10. This firmness is good for a range of body weights and virtually all sleeping positions.
In our tests, the Sapira earned an overall score of 9.47. This ranks Sapira in the top 1% of all mattresses tested to date.
A queen mattress costs $1,599, which is only 5% more than the average hybrid. If you want great performance, but less sinkage than Winkbed, Sapira is a fantastic pick. Sapira is also a great choice if you prefer a non-quilted cover.

Helix Midnight Luxe

Best For
- Incredible cooling performance despite dense memory foam
- Thick, quality memory foam creates fantastic pressure relief
- Edge support is extremely robust
Considerations
- Thick comfort layer and memory foam creates lower bounce and slower material recovery
- Lackluster sex performance
- Price tag is higher than average
Our Verdict
The Helix Midnight Luxe is a 14″ hybrid mattress made up of poly foam, memory foam, and a pocketed coil base. It has a plush 2.0″ quilted cover. Additionally, this mattress has the option to upgrade to a cooling cover for $199, if cooling is an important factor.
The Helix Midnight Luxe is available in a single firmness level — medium-firm with a 6 out of 10 on the firmness scale, where 10 is the most firm.
This mattress has moderate sinkage and low levels of bounce. This creates a surface that is stable and allows for a high degree of contour that slowly envelops your body.
In our performance tests, this mattress earned an overall score of 9.43, ranking the mattress in the 1% of all mattresses tested to date.
The Helix Midnight Luxe is $1,899 for a queen-sized mattress, which is 25% more expensive than average hybrid. Opting for the cooling cover does increase the cost up to just slightly above 2K, but again, what you gain in cooling will certainly be worth the added price for some sleepers.

Birch

Best For
- Natural materials with minimal off-gassing
- Fast material response time and generalized contour
- Exceptional cooling performance
Considerations
- Extremely high levels of bounce, which is great for sex, but still, it can be a bit much for some
- Slightly firm feel (7 out of 10) may be too firm for some, especially side sleepers
- $99 returns
Our Verdict
The Birch is an 11″ latex hybrid mattress with an organic cotton cover, 2.0″ GOLS-certified latex comfort layer, and an 8.0″ pocketed coil layer.
This mattress comes in a single firmness, which has a slightly firm feel, ranking 7 out of 10 on the firmness scale. This firmness is generally more suitable for back or stomach sleepers, as side sleepers could experience too much pushback.
It has moderate sinkage and extremely high bounce. Being a latex hybrid, the Birch mattress has a more generalized hug and contour, which is less exacting in the way it forms to the body. Some sleepers love it and others will hate that feel.
In our performance tests, the Birch earned an overall score of 9.35, ranking in the top 3% of all mattresses tested to date. For a mattress with natural materials that is packed and shipped in a box, the Birch is a great pick.
A queen mattress costs $1,499, which is 22% less expensive than the average latex hybrid mattress. For a value-packed latex hybrid, Birch will check a lot of boxes for many sleepers.

Nolah Natural

Best For
- Natural materials with a latex hybrid design
- Extremely fast material response time
- Excellent cooling performance with aerated latex layers
Considerations
- Deep sinkage and medium feel is great for side sleepers, but not ideal for all
- More bounce than average, which is great for sex, but could be bothersome for some sleepers
- $99 returns
Our Verdict
The Nolah Natural is an 11″ latex hybrid with a 3.0″ of natural latex and an 8.0″ pocketed coil base for support. It is topped with an organic cotton cover.
This mattress has deep sinkage and high bounce. Despite the deep sinkage, Nolah has a generalized contour, which is typical for latex foam. The higher bounce gives the mattress an active feel and making it great for couples.
The Nolah comes in a single firmness—5 out of 10 with a medium feel.
In our performance tests, the Nolah Natural earned a performance score of 9.33, ranking the mattress in the top 4% of all mattresses tested to date.
The price is also below average at $1,574, which 18% less than the average latex hybrid, saving sleepers around $336 for a queen-sized mattress. If you’re looking for a natural mattress that’s ideal for side sleepers and has a medium feel, the Nolah is a great choice.

Glacier Apex

Best For
- Fantastic edge support, both for sitting and lying
- Great value ($1399), 4% less expensive than the average mattress
- Long 365-night trial period and lifetime warranty
Considerations
- Low bounce means sex performance isn’t great
- Response time is slightly slower than average
- Cooling is excellent, but didn’t rise to the outstanding level
Our Verdict
The Glacier Apex is a memory foam hybrid with an overall thickness of 14.25″. It is made of memory foam, transitional poly foam, and a pocketed coil base.
The Apex comes in one firmness, a medium-firm feel that feels like a 6 out of 10 on the firmness scale (where 10 is the most firm).
This mattress has moderate levels of sinkage and low levels of bounce. It has a bit of a restrained feel and avoids the excessive hug and contour that can accompany many mattresses.
In our performance tests, the Glacier Apex earned an overall performance score of 9.27, ranking the Apex in the top 6% of all mattresses tested to date. If we look exclusively at memory foam hybrids, the Apex is the #1 best memory foam hybrid tested to date.
For a queen mattress, the Apex is $1,399, which is 9% less expensive than the average memory foam hybrid price, saving sleepers $139 on a queen mattress. If you’re looking for a great mattress in a box with a memory foam feel, the Glacier Apex is the mattress to beat.

Bear Elite Hybrid

Best For
- Great cooling performance, 10/10 with phase change cover
- Fantastic pressure relief with 5.0″ comfort layer
- Great for sex performance, high bounce
Considerations
- Higher levels of motion transfer, 14% more than the average
- Slightly slower response time than average
- Very deep sinkage may not be ideal for all sleepers
Our Verdict
The Bear Elite Hybrid is a 14″ hybrid mattress with a memory foam top layer, transitional poly foam layer, and a pocketed coil support base. It is topped by a 2.0″ quilted cover that gives the mattress a nice plush feel and balanced contour.
The Bear Elite is available in three different firmness levels—Soft, Medium, or Firm. We tested the Medium version, which we found to have a firmness of 6 out of 10, closer to a medium-firm feel. Based on the materials and design of this mattress, I would estimate the Soft to be a 5 out of 10 (medium feel) and the Firm version to be closer to a 7 out of 10 (slightly firm feel).
The Medium version of this mattress has moderate sinkage and high levels of bounce, 6% higher bounce than the average mattress. Neither of these factors are on the extreme end of the spectrum and still gives the mattress a balanced feel.
In our performance tests, the Elite Hybrid has an overall score of 9.26, an impressive rank that puts this mattress in the top 6% of all mattresses tested to date (considering over 360+ mattresses).
A queen mattress costs $1,578, which is 4% more expensive than the average hybrid. Although the price is slightly higher, you’re also getting a higher-performing mattress so the Bear Elite provides a strong value. For a high-quality mattress, packed in a box, shipped right to your door, and backed by a lifetime warranty, the Bear Elite is one of the best.

Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid

Best For
- Very low levels of motion transfer (memory foam greatly disperses and absorbs energy).
- Fantastic pressure relief, despite only having a 3.0″ comfort layer
- Great edge support when sitting or lying at or near the edge of the mattress
Considerations
- Deep sinkage may not be ideal for all sleepers
- Takes 8 days to off-gas, 2 days longer than average
- 100-night trial, shorter than the 177-night average trial period
Our Verdict
The Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid is a 12″ hybrid made of memory foam, pocketed coils, and a thin support foam at the base of the mattress. The cover is thin and designed to help improve cooling and allow sleepers to more deeply engage with the memory foam layers.
It has deep sinkage and a moderate level of bounce. This gives the mattress a modern memory foam feel, having the contour and hug of memory foam, but without the heat retention (a common issue with memory foam).
This mattress is available in one firmness, 5 out of 10, which is a medium feel. The medium feel makes it an ideal choice for many side sleepers.
In our performance tests, the AS3 earned an overall score of 9.25, ranking the mattress in the top 7% of all mattresses tested to date and within the top 5% looking only at other memory foam hybrids.
Considering price, the AS3 hybrid mattress costs $1,449, making it 6% less expensive than the average memory foam hybrid. All things considered, the Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid is a fantastic value. Sleepers who are looking for a memory foam feel with great cooling, edge support, and sex will be well-suited to the AS3 Hybrid.

- Available in three firmness levels
- Great edge support when seated or lying at or near the edge
Considerations
- 120-night trial is slightly shorter than average (177-night trial)
- Motion transfer levels are slightly higher than average

Our Verdict
The Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe is a 13.25″ hybrid mattress with a quilted cover, a poly foam comfort layer, and a pocketed coil support base.
