Each best list is put through a customized performance analysis with specialized consideration given to our objective & data-driven performance tests. In addition, we consider mattress type, design, materials, value, price, and more.

For our Best Mattress In A Box list, we based our selections on the best-scoring mattresses, according to our battery of testing and formulaic-driven scoring.
Our tests analyze performance across 8 critical factors, including cooling, motion transfer, response time, edge support, sex, pressure relief, off-gassing, and company. In addition, we also test sinkage and bounce (though these are not scoring factors).
Our tests include objective and quantifiable data whenever possible. In addition, we use subjective assessment supported by data to round out our testing process.
Our scores are based on mathematical formulas and equations that utilize inputs from our data-driven testing.
In choosing the best mattresses in a box we looked at the totality of all of our tests, scores, data, and reviews to date. We analyzed this data alongside our established best mattress framework here.
In addition to achieving a high-performance score, all mattresses on this list are vacuum-compressed and shipped in a box.
When selecting the best mattress in a box, we’re looking at a combination of overall scoring performance, firmness ranges, price ranges, shipping speeds, and US availability.
To be included within this list all mattresses:
- Had to have a performance score of 9.24 or higher.
- Had to be available for purchase within the USA.
- Had to be compressed and shipped in a box.
- Latex and latex hybrid mattresses were limited to the top 2 picks by score. Latex has a polarizing feel that some love and some hate. It’s a far more polarizing feel than poly foam or memory foam. See our best latex mattresses list for more mattress choices.
Outliers that met the criteria above, but were still excluded for other various reasons are listed below.

Winkbed Mattress

Best For
- Outstanding performance, above average in every testing category
- Fantastic cooling with the feel of deep sinkage
- 3 available firmness options as well as a plus-sized mattress for heavier sleepers 250+ lbs. (Winkebd Plus)
Considerations
- Deep sinkage may not be ideal for all back or stomach sleepers
- Free returns, but exchanges cost $49
- Costs 6% more than the average hybrid mattress, a difference of about $80
Our Verdict
The WinkBed is a 14″ hybrid mattress and is the #1 best mattress we’ve tested to date. It has a thin Tencel cover with a Euro-style pillow top. The comfort layer includes gel foam, transitional poly foam, and a pocketed coil support base.
It has deep sinkage and moderate levels of bounce. This gives the mattress a balanced contour, suitable for a wide range of sleeper types, but especially nice for side sleepers.
The Winkbed is available in three firmness options—Soft (4), Medium Firm (6), Slightly Firm (7). It also comes in an HD version for plus-sized sleepers over 250 lbs., the Winkbed Plus.
In our performance tests, the Winkbed earned an overall score of 9.82. This score is the highest among any mattress we’ve tested to date.
The Winkbed costs $1499 for a queen mattress, 6% more than the average hybrid, but given its exceptional performance, this mattress is still a fantastic value.

Leesa Sapira

Best For
- Exceptionally good cooling performance, with 4″ foam layer and pocketed coil base
- Very high levels of bounce (12.67″)
- Very low levels of motion transfer, 37% less than average
Considerations
- Price is 13% higher than the average hybrid mattress
- Good edge support while lying but sitting edge support could be better
- 100-night trial period is shorter than average (177 nights)
Our Verdict
The Leesa Sapira is a hybrid mattress that is 11″ thick. It has a thin cotton-blend cover and a comfort layer made of poly foam, memory foam, and a transitional support foam. The support base is pocketed coils and support foam.
This mattress has moderate sinkage and very high bounce. If you prefer an active feel and don’t want to feel “stuck” the Leesa Sapira could be a great option.
This mattress comes in a single firmness, medium-firm, with a firmness rating of 6 out of 10. This firmness is good for a range of body weights and virtually all sleeping positions.
In our tests, the Sapira earned an overall score of 9.50. This ranks Sapira in the top 2% of all mattresses tested to date and the top 1% looking exclusively at hybrids.
A queen mattress costs $1,599, which is 13% more than the average hybrid. But much like Winkbed, you’re paying for a higher-quality mattress. If you want great performance, but less sinkage than Winkbed, Sapira is a fantastic pick.

Birch Latex Hybrid

Best For
- Natural materials with minimal off-gassing
- Fast material response time and generalized contour
- Exceptional cooling performance, thanks largely to the hole-punched latex layer
Considerations
- Generalized contour is not be ideal for all sleepers
- Extremely high levels of bounce, 56% more than average
- Slightly firm feel (7 out of 10) may be too firm, especially lighter side sleepers
Our Verdict
The Birch is an 11″ latex hybrid mattress with an organic cotton cover, 2.0″ GOLS-certified latex comfort layer, and an 8.0″ pocketed coil layer.
It has moderate sinkage and extremely high bounce. Being a latex hybrid, the Birch mattress has a more generalized hug and contour, less exacting to the form of your body. Some sleepers love it and others will hate that feel.
This mattress comes in a single firmness, which has a slightly firm feel, ranking 7 out of 10 on the firmness scale. This firmness is generally more suitable for back or stomach sleepers, as side sleepers could experience too much pushback.
In our performance tests, the Birch earned an overall score of 9.44, ranking in the top 2% of all mattresses tested to date. For a mattress with natural materials that is packed and shipped in a box, the Birch is a great pick.
A queen mattress costs $1,499, which is 3% less expensive than the average latex hybrid mattress. Compared to all mattress types, it’s 8% more than average ($1,383), but that’s more due to the fact that latex costs more and less an issue with Birch specifically.

Nolah Natural

Best For
- Natural materials that are supportive for stomach sleepers
- Extremely fast material response time
- Excellent cooling performance with hole-punched latex layers
Considerations
- Deep sinkage may not be ideal for all stomach sleepers
- More bounce, 24% higher than average
- Shorter trial than average, 120-night trial compared to 177-night average
Our Verdict
The Nolah Natural is an 11″ latex hybrid with a 3.0″ of natural latex, and an 8.0″ pocketed coil base for support. It is topped with an organic cotton cover.
This mattress has deep sinkage and high bounce. Despite the deep sinkage, Nolah has a generalized contour, typical of latex foam. The higher bounce gives the mattress an active feel and making it great for couples.
The Nolah comes in a single firmness—5 out of 10 with a medium feel.
In our performance tests, the Nolah Natural earned a performance score of 9.42, ranking the mattress in the top 3% of all mattresses tested to date.
The price is also below average ($1,365), 12% less than the average latex hybrid, saving sleepers around $183 for a queen-sized mattress. If you’re looking for a natural mattress that’s suitable for all sleeping positions and has a medium feel, the Nolah is a great chioce.

Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe

Best For
- Fantastic pressure relief with 13.25″ thickness
- Available in three firmness levels
- Great edge support when seated or lying at or near the edge
Considerations
- Price is 20% more than the average hybrid mattress
- 120-night trial is slightly shorter than average (177-night trial)
- Motion transfer levels are slightly higher than average
Our Verdict
The Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe is a 13.25″ hybrid mattress with a quilted cover, a poly foam comfort layer, and a pocketed coil support base.
It has moderate sinkage and moderate bounce, giving the mattress a balanced feel all-around.
The Aurora Luxe is available in three firmness options—Soft (4), Medium-Firm (6), and Firm (8). Most sleepers will be best served by the medium-firm version, but it’s great that there are options for sleepers who prefer a distinctly soft or firm feel.
In our performance tests, the Aurora Luxe earned an overall score of 9.33. Considering all mattresses test to date, which puts this mattress in the top 5% of all mattresses tested to date.
Priced at $1,699, the Aurora Luxe is 23% more than the average mattress, but the performance is also significantly higher than the average score (8.52).

Glacier Apex

Best For
- Fantastic edge support, both for sitting and lying
- Great value ($1399), 7% less expensive than the average memory foam hybrid
- Long 365-night trial period and lifetime warranty
Considerations
- May not be ideal for all couples, with low bounce and low sex score
- Response time is slightly slower than average
- All foundations may not be suitable for the 14″ thickness
Our Verdict
The Glacier Apex is a memory foam hybrid with an overall thickness of 14.25″. It is made of memory foam, transitional poly foam, and a pocketed coil base.
This mattress has moderate levels of sinkage and low levels of bounce. It has a bit of a restrained feel and avoids the excessive hug and contour that can accompany many mattresses.
The Apex comes in one firmness, a medium-firm feel that feels like a 6 out of 10 on the firmness scale (where 10 is the most firm).
In our performance tests, the Glacier Apex earned an overall performance score of 9.27, ranking the Apex in the top 7% of all mattresses tested to date. If we look exclusively at memory foam hybrids, the Apex is the #1 best memory foam hybrid tested to date.
For a queen mattress, the Apex is $1,399, 7% less expensive than the average memory foam hybrid price, saving sleepers $113 on a queen mattress. If you’re looking for a great mattress in a box with a memory foam feel, the Glacier Apex is the mattress to beat.

Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid

Best For
- Low levels of motion transfer, 50% less expensive than average
- Fantastic pressure relief, despite only having a 3.0″ comfort layer
- Great edge support when sitting or lying at or near the edge of the mattress
Considerations
- Deep sinkage may not be ideal for heavier stomach sleepers
- Takes 8 days to off-gas, 2 days longer than average
- 100-night trial, shorter than the 177-night average trial period
Our Verdict
The Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid is a 12″ hybrid made of memory foam, pocketed coils, and a thin support foam at the base of the mattress. The cover is thin and designed for cooling.
It has deep sinkage and a moderate level of bounce. This gives the mattress a modern memory foam feel, having the contour and hug of traditional memory foam, but without the heat retention (a common issue with memory foam).
This mattress is available in one firmness, 5 out of 10, which is a medium feel. The medium feel makes it an ideal choice for many side sleepers.
In our performance tests, the AS3 earned an overall score of 9.25, ranking the mattress in the top 9% of all mattresses tested to date. Looking exclusively at memory foam hybrids, that rank rises to the top 4%.
Considering price, the AS3 hybrid mattress costs $1,449, putting it 4% less than the average memory foam hybrid, a savings of $63 for a queen mattress. This makes the AS3 a fantastic value all around. Sleepers who are looking for a memory foam feel with great cooling, edge support, and sex would be well-suited to the AS3 Hybrid.

- Slower material response time, 1.7 seconds for full recovery
Our Verdict
The Bear Elite Hybrid is a 14″ hybrid with a plush cooling cover, copper memory foam, transitional poly foam, a pocketed coil support layer, and a base of high-density support foam.
It has moderate sinkage and high levels of bounce. This mattress is designed for great cooling, low motion transfer, and a balanced feel.
