Performance Categories
Performance Categories

For our Best Mattress for Heavy People list, we based our selections on the best-scoring mattresses, according to our battery of testing and formulaic-driven scoring.

Our tests analyze performance across 8 critical factors, including cooling, motion transfer, response time, edge support, sex, pressure relief, off-gassing, and company. In addition, we also test sinkage and bounce (though these are not scoring factors).

Our tests include objective and quantifiable data whenever possible. In addition, we use subjective assessment supported by data to round out our testing process.

Our scores are based on mathematical formulas and equations that utilize inputs from our data-driven testing.

You can see our complete testing and scoring process here.

In choosing the best mattresses for heavy sleepers we looked at the totality of all of our tests, scores, data, and reviews to date. We analyzed this data alongside our established best mattress framework here.

In addition to achieving a high-performance score, all mattresses on this list have to be able to support at least 450 pounds per side.

When selecting the best mattress for heavy people, we’re looking at a combination of overall scoring performance, firmness, weight support, and US availability.

To be included within this best-of list, all mattresses had to:

  • Be designed specifically for heavier people.
  • Be able to support at least 450 lbs. per side.
  • Have a performance of 8.72 or higher
  • Be available within the USA

Best For

  • Excellent cooling, breathable with limited heat retention
  • Contouring pillow top with 2.5″ of sinkage
  • Exceptional pressure relief, 14.5″ thick overall

Considerations

  • Slightly higher motion than average (9.67 m/s²)
  • Deep sinkage may not be ideal heavy back or stomach sleepers
  • $49 handling fee for exchanges, but returns are free

Our Verdict

The WinkBed Plus mattress is a more robust version of the classic Winkbed experience for sleepers over 300 lbs. Its design incorporates the use of denser latex and support foams in the comfort layer, compared to the original Winkbed.

The Winkbed Plus has a slightly firm feel that is a 7 out of 10 on the firmness scale. This mattress can support up to 450 lbs. per side (900 lbs total).

We measured deeper-than-average sinkage while lying on the mattress and low bounce levels. Heavier-weighted side sleepers would benefit from these effects and the deeper contour this mattress provides.

The biggest difference between the Winkbed Plus and the original Winkbed is the inclusion of 2.5” of latex, compared to poly foam on the original version. This latex foam, in combination with the other materials, creates a firmer feel that is better suited to heavier body types. In addition, the pocketed spring unit has a higher coil count than the original and firmer coils, which reinforces support and pressure relief, while limiting motion transfer.

Regarding performance across our scored categories, the Winkbed had a combined score of 9.34, putting it in the top 3% of all mattresses tested to date.

The price is also surprisingly affordable, $1,699 for a queen—8% less expensive than the average plus-sized mattress, for a savings of $156 (on a queen-sized mattress). When you combine the top-tier performance with the below-average price tag, the Winkbed Plus feels like a real bargain.

Best For

  • Exceptionally good cooling performance with an advanced cooling cover
  • Outstanding edge support for both sitting and lying
  • Incredible pressure relief and comfort

Considerations

  • $2,999 for a queen mattress, nearly 2X the average cost
  • 15.5″ profile may not be great for a low-profile aesthetic
  • Worse sex performance than average due to low bounce

Our Verdict

The Helix Plus Elite mattress is the ultimate model within the Helix Plus line. Its design includes 8 distinct material layers for a total 15.5″ thickness. Sitting atop their robust pocketed coil unit is a 6.0″ comfort layer containing a sandwiched blend of poly foam and micro coils.

The Helix Plus Elite mattress only has a single firmness option (6.5 out of 10) and creates a medium-firm feel.

The mattress has deeper-than-average sinkage, which creates more hug around the body. The mattress has notably less bounce than average, which is great for keeping motion transfer lower, but also means that sex performance isn’t great.

There are numerous design inclusions that make the Plus Elite fantastic for heavier people: a thicker-than-average support layer (9.5” vs. 7.9” average), pocketed coils, zoned lumbar support, and a robust perimeter foam for enhanced edge support. Furthermore, the layer of microcoils aid in comfort and cooling (with increased breathability) on the mattress.

In our performance tests, the Helix Plus Elite has exceptional performance, with an overall score of 9.31. Its only real disadvantage is a lower sex score. Despite sex performance, this score puts the Elite in the top 4% of all mattresses we’ve ever tested.

As expected, high performance can sometimes come at a higher price. The Plus Elite is $2,999 for a queen, nearly 2X the cost of the average plus-sized mattress.

Best For

  • Great value pick, $1549 for a Queen
  • Exceptional edge support for heavier sleepers
  • Excellent cooling with limited heat retention

Considerations

  • 8-day off-gassing duration is 2 days longer than average
  • Very minimal level of sinkage may not be ideal for side sleepers
  • Higher bounce than average

Our Verdict

Despite being only 13″, the Big Fig mattress is a hybrid designed for plus-sized sleepers. It includes a plush quilted cover, poly foam, and a pocketed coil base.

The Big Fig has a slightly firm feel with a firmness rating of 7 out of 10, where 10 is the most firm. This is the only firmness option available.

From our data, the Big Fig has very minimal levels of sinkage and high levels of bounce. This is fairly standard with firmer mattresses designed for heavier people, but it maintains a comfortable feel appropriate for heavier sleepers.

The Big Fig does not have as many bells and whistles as our first couple of picks. However, it does have a thicker support layer than average showcasing a pocketed coil unit with 1200 individual coils (queen size). This is on the high end of the typical range of 800-1200 coils. It also includes a latex layer, a high-density base support layer, and reinforced perimeter foam for edge support. Overall, it can support bodies of 550 lbs. per side (1,100 lbs. total).

The Big Fig scored 9.31 in our performance tests, ranking within the top 4% of all mattresses tested to date.

On top of fantastic performance scores, its price tag is more than reasonable at $1,549, 14% less than the average plus-sized mattress. For heavy people on a tighter budget, this is a great mattress.

Best For

  • Fantastic pressure relief—7.5″ of comfort material
  • Incredibly sex performance, earning a 10/10 score
  • Exceptional edge support with only 2.5″ of sinkage when sitting on the edge

Considerations

  • Higher price tag, 67% more expensive than the average plus-sized mattress
  • More transfer is notably worse than average
  • Very high bounce is great for sex, but could still be an annoyance for some sleepers

Our Verdict

The Saatva HD mattress, designed for plus-sized sleepers, measures 15.5″ and includes thicker 12.5-gauge steel coils, high-density foams (5.0 PCF), and a thicker comfort layer, all contributing to its superior quality and performance.

The Saatva HD comes in a single firmness level (7 out of 10) with a slightly firm feel. It can support up to 500 lbs. per side (1,000 lbs. total).

This mattress minimizes sinkage while providing a very high level of bounce. For these reasons, I recommend it for back or stomach sleepers, and especially for couples who could benefit from a bouncier surface during amorous activities.

The mattress is able to create truly extraordinary support for heavier-weighted bodies. The coil unit uses 12.5 gauge steel coils, which are much thicker and more supportive than most mattresses. On top of that, the memory foam and poly foam layers are much denser at 5.0 PCF, where 2.0-3.0 PCF would be considered more typical. Finally, the latex foam is zoned for more personalized comfort and better support where bodies need it.

Our performance tests gave the Saatva HD an overall score of 9.22, scoring within the top 9% of all mattresses tested to date.

The Saatva HD is pricier than most mattresses in this guide, $3,099 for a queen mattress, equating to 67% more than the average plus-sized mattress. However, its exceptional material and build quality make it a worthwhile investment for heavier people, especially those weighing over 300 pounds.

Lastly, unlike most mattresses here that ship compressed in a box, Saatva’s HD ships via white glove / full service delivery. They’ll set up the new mattress and haul away your old one for free.

Titan Plus Elite

10 Cooling
9.0 Motion Transfer
6.3 Response Time
8.6 Edge Support
7.9 Sex

8.2 Company

Best For

  • Exceptional pressure relief with 5.5 of comfort material
  • Fantastic cooling performance with microcoils sandwiched in the comfort layer
  • Less motion transfer than the average

Considerations

  • Response time is significantly slower than average (2.0 seconds for full recovery)
  • Deep sinkage may not be great for back or stomach sleepers
  • Weaker support when seated at or near the edge

Our Verdict

The Titan Plus Elite is a 14″ plus-sized mattress designed to support sleepers up to 500 lbs per side (1000 lbs in total). The Elite version of the mattress is the most expensive of the three models within the Titan Plus line. It adds a layer of micro coils sandwiched between poly foams to provide extra support while maintaining exceptional pressure relief.

The Plus Elite is only available with a 6 out of 10 firmness rating, which is a medium-firm feel. This is a touch softer than many plus-sized mattresses that rely on denser, firmer foams to provide the appropriate support dynamic.

The Titan Plus Elite has deep sinkage levels while offering a balanced contouring hug, rather than something more dramatic, as seen with memory foam. However, like memory foam, the mattress has lower bounce, which negatively impacts ease of movement and sex performance.

On top of the extra thickness of 14” (average is 12”), heavier bodies can benefit from the layer of micro-coils that enhance both comfort and cooling. The coil unit is a bit taller as well at 8.5”. Overall, this is the highest-tier Titan mattress— capable of supporting up to 500 lbs., while staying comfortable for lighter-weighted sleepers also.

When it comes to performance, the Titan Plus Elite takes a bit of a drop from the previous entries, with a score of 8.88. This is due to its lower response and sex scores, but those are outliers among generally outstanding performance. Even so, the Plus Elite is within the top 29% of all mattresses we’ve tested.

For a queen-sized mattress, the Titan Plus Elite is $1,798, which is 3% less expensive than the average compared to other Plus-Sized mattresses we’ve tested.

Best For

  • Excellent pressure relief, 6.0″ comfort layer is 46% thicker than average
  • Fast material response time
  • Great cooling performance

Considerations

  • Motion transfer is higher than is ideal
  • 15″ thick profile may be too tall for some sleepers
  • Deep sinkage might be problematic for some back or stomach sleepers

Our Verdict

The Nolah Evolution Comfort+ is a 15″ plus-sized mattress with 6″ devoted to comfort material. On top of that, it has an even softer feel than the Titan Plus Elite while being no less supportive.

The mattress is only offered in the one firmness option, which is a 5.5 out of 10. This is a medium feel, which is rare in the plus-sized category. But, again, it is still suitable for sleepers with 300-500 lbs.

The Comfort+ offers a much deeper sinkage level than most winners on this list, due to that softer feel and extra foam. It creates a more notable hug, for those who enjoy being a bit more enveloped by their mattress. However, it maintains a fast response and moderately high bounce to keep you from ever feeling stuck.

All that said, this is one of the best plus-sized mattresses for side sleeping.

The 15” thickness gives heavier bodies plenty of material to sink into and plenty of support material to balance it out. The latter includes a zoned pocketed coil unit with 13.5 gauge coils for extra support. The perimeter set of coils is also reinforced to provide balanced support for sitting or lying on the edge of the mattress

The Nolah Comfort+ scored 8.83 in our performance tests, placing it within the top 35% of all mattresses tested to date.

The price of a queen-sized Nolah is $1,874, which is about average for a plus-sized mattress. For those looking for a softer feel with a more lively surface, this is a fantastic option.

Best For

  • Excellent pressure relief for sleepers up to 500 lbs. (per side)
  • Great for couples with a balanced feel and good sex score (9.0)
  • Fantastic value—under $1300 for a queen size mattress

Consideration

  • Motion transfer levels just aren’t great
  • 100-night trial period is shorter than average
  • Only available in a medium-firm feel, which could be too soft for some heavier people

Our Verdict

The Leesa Plus Hybrid mattress comes in a little thinner than the winners higher up on this list. At 13″ thick, its design consists of 2 layers of poly foam, pocketed support coils, a slight support foam base, and topped in a plush quilted cover.

Again, this mattress is only offered in a single-firmness option, a 6 out of 10. This is a medium-firm feel that is more widely seen with non-plus-sized models. Even still, it can support 500 lbs on both sides.

The Leesa Plus Hybrid has both moderate levels of sinkage and bounce. This strikes a nice balance for back, stomach, and side sleepers alike. Though it has a less dramatic contour and hug.

The thicker-than-average height of the mattress is beneficial for heavier bodies, albeit 13” is not the thickest on this list. Even so, it’s hard to complain too much given the relatively inexpensive price point the Leesa Plus is able to achieve. The coil unit in the queen size includes 981 13.5-gauge pocketed coils. The lower gauge coil is a thicker wire that is firmer and more supportive than the coils used in many other mattresses.

In our performance tests, the Leesa Plus Hybrid scored the lowest of the mattresses on this list at 8.72, ranking in the top 46% of all mattresses tested to date. This lower score is largely due to its high motion transfer, which makes it less appealing for couples who share a bed. All other categories scored well, and it still ranks well above the average mattress.

Better still is the price. At $1,319, the Leesa Plus has the lowest cost of any plus-sized mattress on this list. If you’re on a budget and motion transfer isn’t a deal-breaker, the Leesa Plus is a great option for heavier-weighted sleepers.
