Each best list is put through a customized performance analysis with specialized consideration given to our objective & data-driven performance tests. In addition, we consider mattress type, design, materials, value, price, and more.

Performance Testing Factors
Performance Testing Factors

For our Best Mattress for Couples list, we based our selections on the best-scoring mattresses, according to our battery of testing and formulaic-driven scoring.

Our tests analyze performance across 8 critical factors, including cooling, motion transfer, response time, edge support, sex, pressure relief, off-gassing, and company. In addition, we also test sinkage and bounce (though these are not scoring factors).

Our tests include objective and quantifiable data whenever possible. In addition, we use subjective assessment supported by data to round out our testing process.

Our scores are based on mathematical formulas and equations that utilize inputs from our data-driven testing.

You can see our complete testing and scoring process here.

In choosing the best mattresses for couples we looked at the totality of all of our tests, scores, data, and reviews to date. We analyzed this data alongside our established best mattress framework here.

In addition to achieving a high performance score, all mattresses on this list have low motion transfer (so you don’t feel your partner’s movements as much during the night) and had to perform fantastic for sex.

When selecting the best mattress for couples, we’re looking at a combination of overall scoring performance, firmness, and US availability.

To be included within this list all mattresses:

  • Had to have a firmness between 5-7 out of 10, where 10 is the most firm. This firmness range is preferred by most sleepers.
  • Had to have a performance score of 9.12 or higher.
  • Had to have a motion transfer score of 9.0 or higher.
  • Had to have a sex score of 8.8 or higher.
  • Had to be available for purchase within the USA.
  • Latex and latex hybrid mattresses were limited to the top 2 picks by score. Latex has a polarizing feel that some love and some hate. It’s a far more polarizing feel than poly foam or memory foam. See our best latex mattresses list for more.

Outliers that met the criteria above, but were still excluded for other various reasons are listed below.

Best For

  • Fantastic cooling while still offering deep sinkage and contour
  • Exceptional edge support when sitting or lying at or near the edge
  • Great pressure relief and low levels of motion transfer

Considerations

  • 14″ thickness may not pair well with all foundations if you want a low-profile look
  • 120-night trial is shorter than 179-night average trial
  • Exchanges are $49, but returns are free

Our Verdict

The WinkBed is a 14″ hybrid mattress with a balanced feel and outstanding performance. It has a euro top cover made with Tencel, a poly foam comfort layer, gel foam, a pocketed coil support, and a 1.0″ foam base.

It is available in three firmnesses—Soft (4), Medium Firm (6), or Slightly Firm (7) which makes it an attractive pick for couples. If you opt for one firmness and decide to switch to something firmer or softer, there is a $49 exchange fee to do so.

It has deep sinkage and moderate levels of bounce, giving the mattress greater contour. This can be especially beneficial for side sleepers.

In our performance tests, the Winkbed was a slam dunk, with an overall score of 9.82. This ranks the Winkbed as the #1 best mattress we’ve tested to date.

Winkbed did fantastic for both motion and sex performance. In our motion transfer test, it had 34% less motion than average. Likewise, with a sex score of 9.1 and a total bounce height of 9.91″, the amorous activity performance is excellent.

A queen Winkbed is $1,499, 8% more expensive than the average hybrid mattress, but given the exceptional performance, it’s an amazing value for couples.

Best For

  • Extremely high levels of bounce, great for sex performance
  • Deep sinkage may be more beneficial for side sleepers
  • Scores perfect 10/10 in 4 out of 8 scoring categories

Considerations

  • Price is 79% more than the average coil mattress
  • High bounce is great for sex, but not as ideal for sleeping
  • Ships uncompressed, not rolled into a box

Our Verdict

The Saatva Classic is a coil-on-coil mattress with a more traditional coil mattress feel. It has a plush organic cotton cover with a pillowtop design. Two coil layers provide both comfort and support for sleepers.

The Saatva is available in three firmness levels—Soft (3.5), Medium (5.5), or Firm (8). Most sleepers should go with the medium, which Saatva calls luxury firm. However, it’s nice that Saatva offers a soft and firm if you know you need that comfort dynamic.

This mattress has deep sinkage and extremely high levels of bounce. For intimacy in the bedroom, this bounce is absolutely critical and really enhances the appeal of the Saatva.

In our performance tests, the Saatva Classic has an overall score of 9.74. Considering 300+ mattresses tested to date, the Saatva performs in the top 1% of all mattresses.

In our motion transfer tests, Saatva measured 5.86 m/s², which is 33% less motion transfer than average. In addition, the mattress absolutely shines when it comes to sex, earning a nearly perfect 9.9 out of 10. With 14.67″ of bounce height the mattress is incredibly fun for the dance without pants.

A queen Saatva is $1,795, which is 29% more than the average mattress. But given the higher performance, the Saatva is still a great value pick for many sleeper types.

Leesa Sapira

10 Cooling
10 Motion Transfer
9.5 Response Time
7.5 Edge Support
9.1 Sex
10 Pressure Relief

9.7 Company

Best For

  • Very low motion transfer levels, 47% less than average
  • Very high bounce (12.67″), great for sex performance
  • Fantastic pressure relief, despite being only 11″ thick

Considerations

  • Edge support when seated at the edge of the mattress could be better (6.25″ of sinkage, 4.05″ is average)
  • 100-night trial period is 78 nights shorter than average

Our Verdict

The Leesa Sapira is an 11″ hybrid mattress with a cotton cover, 4.0″ foam comfort layer, and a pocketed coil base. It is thinner than both the Winkbed and the Saatva, giving the mattress a more modern look.

The Sapira is available in a single firmness level, 6 out of 10, which gives it a medium-firm feel.

This mattress has moderate sinkage and very high levels of bounce. High bounce is great for sex performance and gives the mattresses an active feel.

In our performance tests, it earned an overall score of 9.50. Looking at all the mattresses we’ve tested to date, this score ranks Sapira in the top 2% of all mattresses.

In our motion transfer test, the Sapira earned the “extremely low” level with just 4.66 m/s², which is 47% less than average. Sex performance wasn’t as impressive, it still earned a 9.1. While the edge support leaves something to be desired, the 12.67″ of total bounce makes amorous activities easier and fun.

This mattress is also a good value. The price tag is 15% more expensive than the average mattress, but given its good performance and wide appeal to a number of different sleeper types, the Leesa Sapira is still one of the top-value hybrids you can find.

Birch

10 Response Time
8.1 Edge Support
9.5 Sex
9.0 Pressure Relief

9.1 Company

Best For

  • Low levels of motion transfer, 38% less than average
  • Extremely high bounce is fantastic for sex performance
  • Natural materials at a value price—3% less expensive than average latex hybrid with better performance

Considerations

  • High levels of bounce may be too much for some sleepers
  • 3.0″ comfort layer may be too thin for some heavier sleepers (opt for Birch Luxe for a thicker comfort layer)
  • Edge support is good, but not great

Our Verdict

The Birch is an 11″ latex hybrid mattress with an organic cotton cover, GOLS-certified latex comfort layer, and pocketed coil base. This mattress also uses wool within the base of the mattress as well as the liner to the cotton cover.

This mattress has a single firmness, 7 out of 10, giving the mattress a slightly firm feel.

Birch has moderate sinkage and extremely high levels of bounce. For intimacy, bounce is key and a great asset for couples. The moderate sinkage also makes it a good choice for a wide range of sleepers.

In our performance tests, Birch earned an overall score of 9.44, ranking Birch in the top 2% of all mattresses tested to date. It has above-average performance across the board.

Birch measured at a very low level of motion transfer, just 5.52 m/s². That puts it 37% below the average motion level. In addition, sex performance is fantastic, largely being carried by the 12.67″ of bounce. In general, latex hybrids do great for amorous activities and the Birch is no exception.

A queen Birch mattress is $1,499, 8% more than the average mattress. But it’s also 3% less expensive than the average latex hybrid. Latex hybrids are more expensive than average, but if you’re looking for a deal, Birch is a solid buy.

Nolah Natural

8.4 Edge Support
9.4 Sex

Best For

  • Natural materials, at a slightly lower price point than Birch
  • Medium feel (5 out of 10), also softer than Birch
  • Perfect performance in 3 categories—fantastic cooling, fast material response time, and quick off-gassing

Considerations

  • Deep sinkage may not be ideal for all sleepers, especially those who sleep on their stomach or back
  • High bounce, 23% more than average
  • Shorter 120-night trial period (average is 179 nights)

Our Verdict

The Nolah Natural is a latex hybrid mattress that is 11″ thick. It contains a 3.0″ comfort layer of hole-punched latex with a pocketed coil support base.

This mattress has a medium feel, 5 out of 10 on the firmness scale. Compared to Birch, the other latex mattress on this list, the Nolah Natural is a bit softer.

The Nolah Natural has deep sinkage and high levels of bounce, making it a great option for side sleepers of any body weight (up to 300 lbs). Lighter stomach or back sleepers could also be well-suited by this firmness and feel.

In our performance tests, the Nolah Natural earned an overall score of 9.42, ranking among the top 3% of all mattresses we’ve tested to date.

Motion transfer was very low on the Nolah, measuring at 6.04 m/s². This is 31% less motion than the average and it’s an especially good score for a latex hybrid. Sex performance was similar to Leesa’s Sapira, with nearly perfect performance across the board, excluding edge support, which was a notable weak spot. Despite the weaker edge support, Nolah’s 11.76″ of bounce carried the dance without pants performance.

Lastly, the price is also impressive. Priced at only $1,365, the Nolah Natural is 11% less than the average latex hybrid mattress. This provides a savings of $168 for a queen mattress. Given its higher performance and low price, the Nolah Natural is marked as an outstanding value for couples looking for a natural mattress.

  • Three firmness options—soft, medium-firm, or slightly firm
  • Very low levels of motion transfer, 56% less than average
  • Great pressure relief with 5.0″ comfort layer

Considerations

  • Material response time is slower than average
  • High bounce may not be ideal for all sleeper preferences
  • 120-night trial is slightly shorter than average

Our Verdict

The Bear Elite Hybrid is a 14″ hybrid mattress with a quilted cover, copper memory foam comfort layer, transitional poly foam, and a pocketed coil base. It has a balanced feel and the 5.0″ comfort layer provides fantastic pressure relief for couples.

This mattress is available in three firmness levels—Soft (4.5), Medium-Firm (6), or Firm (7.5).

We tested the medium-firm in-house and found the Bear to have moderate sinkage and high levels of bounce. The high bounce gives it a great sex score, while the memory foam comfort layer keeps motion transfer surprisingly low.

In our performance tests, this mattress had an overall score of 9.24, ranking among the top 9% of all mattresses tested to date.

Motion transfer truly shined on the Bear Elite, measuring at just 3.74 m/s². This is 57% less motion than the average and among the least motion transfer we’ve tested to date. Sex performance was also good, earning an 8.8 score. Bear is the worst sex score on this list, but still notably better than the average of 8.5, based on all of our tests to date.

The price is $1,614 for a queen mattress, which is 5% more than the average memory foam hybrid mattress. But the overage feels marginal compared to the significantly better performance than the Elite provides. If you can swing the price, the Elite is the best memory foam hybrid for couples.

  • Great cooling performance with optional cooling cover
  • Fantastic pressure relief, 10/10

Considerations

  • Long off-gassing, 15 day duration (average is 6 days)
  • Shorter trial period, only 100 nights long
  • Priced 34% more than the average hybrid

Our Verdict

The Helix Midnight Luxe is a hybrid mattress that has a similar material breakdown as the Bear Elite. It has a quilted cover, copper memory foam, transitional poly foam, and pocketed coil base.

This mattress is available in a single firmness, 6 out of 10, which gives the mattress a medium-firm feel.

It has moderate sinkage and high levels of bounce. Again, like the Bear Elite, this high bounce is great for sex performance. It has more motion transfer than Bear, but still less than average.

In our performance tests, the Midnight Luxe earned an overall score of 9.14, ranking in the top 14% of all mattresses tested to date (over 300+ mattresses considered).

In our motion transfer tests, the Midnight Luxe measured at 7.16 m/s², which 17% less motion than average. Sex performance was also better than average, scoring a 9.1 and beating the average of 8.5 easily.

The price is a little higher as well, $1,899, which is 37% more than the average hybrid. But this is still a solid mattress. To save some cash, you could check out the Helix Midnight, which is $800 cheaper, but it lacks the plush quilted cover and has a slightly lower overall performance (8.95).
