Costco mattresses are cheaper than many other mattresses for two primary reasons:
- Costco’s membership costs and limited options mean Costco can order mattresses in bulk and sell them at a lower margin. Costco caps the markup margin on most products at 14%.
- Costco works with mattress brands to create more budget-friendly models and special model versions. The mattress brand will then design and tune the mattress so that it can be sold at a lower price point (by using less expensive materials, meaning the total cost to manufacturer is lower). This is done by choosing material types, material quality levels, foam density levels, coil unit types, coil unit quality levels, coil gauge levels, more simple covers (IE, rare to see a cooling cover or phase change materials), and other material / design choices that allow for a lower mattress cost.
Costco’s approach to sell lower spec mattresses does mean their prices are among the best in the industry. However, based on our tests of 14 Costco mattress models, the weaker performance of these stripped down designs is significant.
The average performance level of the 14 Costco mattresses we’ve tested to date is 7.58. For comparison, the average performance level of all mattresses we’ve tested to date is 8.55, quite a bit higher than the Costco average.
Based on the 14 Costco mattresses we’ve tested to date, I have been unimpressed by the level of mattress performance. While the prices are indeed excellent (as is the return policy), the mattress performance and material quality are incredibly disappointing.
As such, for most sleepers, I think there are simply better mattresses sold elsewhere. For budget-friendly mattresses that I recommend highly take a look at our Best Cheap Mattress (Under $700) and Best Affordable Mattress (Under $1,000) guides.
Both of these are fantastic resources for highlighting affordable mattresses that don’t necessarily sacrifice performance.
In the interest of full disclosure – we do not currently have referral links for Costco. When you use our referral links to make a purchase, we may earn a commission. While Costco does have a referral link program, which we have applied to join, Costco has not allowed us into their program. My assumption is that Costco has seen that our reviews of their mattresses are less-than-stellar and as a result does not want us to participate in their referral program (please know, this is a guess, Costco has not communicated this to NapLab).

Each best list is put through a customized performance analysis with specialized consideration given to our objective & data-driven performance tests. In addition, we consider mattress type, design, materials, value, price, and more.

For our Best Costco Mattress list, we based our selections on the best-scoring mattresses, according to our battery of testing and formulaic-driven scoring.
Our tests analyze performance across 8 critical factors, including cooling, motion transfer, response time, edge support, sex, pressure relief, off-gassing, and company. In addition, we also test sinkage and bounce (though these are not scoring factors).
Our tests include objective and quantifiable data whenever possible. In addition, we use subjective assessment supported by data to round out our testing process.
Our scores are based on mathematical formulas and equations that utilize inputs from our data-driven testing.
In choosing the best Costco mattresses we looked at the totality of all of our tests, scores, data, and reviews to date. We analyzed this data alongside our established best mattress framework here.
In addition to achieving a high-performance score, all mattresses on this list had to be available for purchase at Costco.
When selecting the best Costco mattress, we’re looking at a combination of overall scoring performance, price, US availability, and Costco availability..
To be included within this list all mattresses:
- Had to have a performance score of 7.32 or higher.
- Had to be available for purchase at Costco.
- Had to be available for purchase within the USA.

Casper Cooling Select Hybrid

Best For
- Low levels of motion transfer
- Fantastic cooling performance with poly foam comfort layer + pocketed coil base
- A hybrid mattress under $800, best Costco mattress tested to date
Considerations
- Takes longer than average to off-gas (15 days)
- Sitting edge support is good, but lying support is only fair
- Minimal sinkage may not be ideal for all side sleepers
Our Verdict
The Casper Cooling Select is an 11.75″ hybrid mattress and the top-performing mattress we’ve tested from Costco. It has a comfort layer of poly foam and memory foam with a pocketed coil base.
This mattress is available in a single firmness, 6 out of 10, with a medium-firm feel.
It has minimal sinkage and a moderate level of bounce. A feel like this would generally be suitable for a wide range of sleepers, but some side sleepers may prefer a bit more sinkage.
In our performance tests, the Cooling Select scored an 8.63, ranking in the top 50% of all mattresses tested.
Priced at only $699, the Casper Cooling Select Hybrid is 54% less than the average hybrid mattress. For a hybrid mattress with above-average performance and a below-average cost, the Casper Cooling Select Hybrid is a solid pick.

Purple Renew

Best For
- Excellent cooling performance with limited heat retention
- Nearly instantaneous material response time
- Off-gasses slightly faster than average (5 days)
Considerations
- Pressure relief is not great, and the mattress has a bit of a “floating feel” overall
- Lacks edge support when sitting and lying at or near the edge
- Not available in smaller sizes (Twin, Twin XL, or Full)
Our Verdict
The Purple Renew is an 11″ hybrid mattress that is made of support foam, poly foam, and the patented Purple gel grid.
This mattress is available in one firmness—6 out of 10 and with a medium-firm feel.
The Renew has minimal sinkage and a moderate level of bounce. Like other Purple mattresses we’ve tested, the Renew has more of a floating feel with generalized contour. I wouldn’t recommend this mattress for side sleepers, but some back or stomach sleepers may find it to be a nice option.
In our performance test, the Renew scored an 8.17 overall, which actually puts the mattress in the bottom 21% of all mattresses tested to date. If we look exclusively at hybrids, that rank drops down even lower to the bottom 17%. Although the score is high enough to be considered one of the “best” from Costco, it’s still not really a great mattress for many sleepers.
The performance is lower than average, but the price is also lower than average. The Renew is $1,399 for a queen mattress, 4% less than the average mattress. If you’ve shopped around Purple’s website, you’d see that the Renew is also more affordable than the Restore + Rejuvenate collection.

Kirkland Signature Lakeridge

Best For
- Lower levels of motion transfer
- Good pressure relief with deeper sinkage and 6.25″ comfort layer
- Good edge support when sitting or lying
Considerations
- Longer off-gassing duration (8 days)
- Cooling struggles, and the mattress has higher levels of heat retention
- Lower bounce is not ideal for sex performance
Our Verdict
The Kirkland Signature Lakeridge by Sterns & Foster is a 14.5″ thick hybrid with poly foam, memory foam, and a pocketed coil base. In total, it has a 6.25″ comfort layer, significantly thicker than the 4.1″ average thickness.
This mattress is available in a single firmness, 5 out of 10, which gives the mattress a medium feel.
In our tests, it had very deep sinkage and a low level of bounce. Especially for side sleepers, this deeper sinkage creates an appealing level of contour when sleeping.
The Kirkland Signature Lakeridge has an overall performance score of 7.95, ranking the mattress among the bottom 15% of all mattresses tested to date. This isn’t the level of performance we’re looking for in a “Best For” pick, but for Costco, it’s pretty good.
Priced under $1000, the Kirkland can be an attractive option for sleepers on a budget who want a medium feel and deeper sinkage.

Beautyrest Silver

Best For
- Great edge support when sitting or lying at or near the edge
- Fast material response time
- Great for sex performance, given the higher bounce
Considerations
- Very high levels of motion transfer—nearly 2X the average
- Struggles with pressure relief, not ideal for heavier sleepers over 200 lbs.
- Cooling is good, but not great
Our Verdict
The Beautyrest Silver BRS900 mattress is a 12″ coil mattress. It is made predominantly of pocketed coils and has a thin poly foam top layer with a tufted cover.
This mattress comes in a single firmness—6 out of 10, which gives the mattress a medium-firm feel.
It has deep sinkage and very high bounce, creating a mattress that is engaging and with an active feel.
In our performance tests, the Beautyrest Silver earned an overall score of 7.85, ranking in the bottom 14% of all mattresses tested to date. That being said, for coil mattresses exclusively, the Beautyrest ranks in the top 29% (since this mattress type typically scores worse compared to other mattress types).
As an added advantage, the Beautyrest Silver is only $419 for a queen mattress, 71% less than the average mattress. If you’re on a very tight budget and need a mattress for under $500, the Silver can be a reasonable option.

Sealy Posturepedic Plus RidgeCrest II

Best For
- Thick profile height at 14″ (2″ thicker than average )
- Responsive surface due to poly foam in the comfort layer
- Highly supportive edge and moderately high bounce—great for sex performance
Considerations
- High motion transfer level, not ideal for sensitive couples
- Pressure relief is lacking, especially for side sleeping
- Cooling is good but not great; proceed with caution if you already sleep warm
Our Verdict
The Sealy Posturepedic Plus Ridgecrest II is a 14″ innerspring mattress offering a thick comfort layer made of poly foam paired with the traditional support of an innerspring coil unit.
The Posturepedic Plus mattress offers two firmness choices: Plush, with a medium feel (5 out of 10 firmness), and Firm, with a slightly firmer feel (7 out of 10), where 10 is the most firm.
The Ridgecrest II has moderate levels of sinkage and bounce, which gives it a balanced feel of a classic coil mattress.
This mattress has a performance score of 7.60, which ranks it in the bottom 10% of all mattresses tested to date. While this is a thick mattress, bigger doesn’t always mean better. The lower quality of materials really hurt its performance across many categories, including pressure relief.
Fortunately, the RidgeCrest II has an incredibly budget-friendly price at $780 for a queen mattress. This is 46% less than the average mattress price, considering all mattresses and all types tested to date ($1,449).

Novaform Serafina Pearl

Best For
- Motion transfer levels are slightly below average
- Deep sinkage and contour (if that’s a feel that you’re looking for)
- Long trial and warranty
Considerations
- Off-gassing took 26 days for odors to dissipate
- Edge support is a little worse than average
- Cooling performance was lacking
Our Verdict
The Nofavorm Serafina Pearl is a 14″ thick mattress with an all-foam construction. Its design includes a 3.0″ gel memory foam layer, a 2.5″ convoluted memory foam layer, and an 8.5″ support foam as the base.
The Serafina Pearl is available in 3 distinct firmness options — soft, medium, and firm. These options are rated at 4, 5, and 8, respectively, on a firmness scale, where 10 is the most firm. All tests were performed on the medium option.
The Serafina Pearl combines a deep sinkage with high levels of bounce. The memory foam paired with the deep sinkage creates an enveloping feeling with a dramatic contour and hug around one’s body.
The Novaform Serafina Pearl earned an overall performance score of 7.58, which ranks it among the bottom 9% of all mattresses tested to date. However, this overall score was significantly affected by the super low off-gassing performance. On the plus side, its pressure relief is among the best on this list.
Another benefit of the Serafina Pearl is its affordable price of only $750. Compared to the average memory foam model we’ve tested, this is 29% less expensive. In the end, the Pearl may be an excellent budget choice for those who don’t mind the extra wait for off-gassing and the subpar cooling performance.

Tempurpedic Supreme

Best For
- Famously low levels of motion transfer
- One of the lowest-priced Tempurpedic mattresses on the market
- Excellent pressure relief with 3.0″ of quality memory foam
Considerations
- Sex performance suffers with low bounce and poor edge support
- Extremely long off-gassing duration (40 days!)
- One of the slowest responding mattresses we’ve tested
Our Verdict
The Tempurpedic Supreme mattress is an 11.25″ memory foam mattress sold exclusively at Costco. It is made of 2 layers of the brand’s special memory foam that sits atop 2 layers of support foam. The bottom-most layer is cut with air channels to aid in breathability.
The mattress is available in two firmness options — medium and firm. However, we found the medium to be more like a medium-firm (6 out of 10) while the firm is a solid 8 out of 10, where 10 is the most firm.
The Supreme offers sleepers moderate sinkage and one of the lowest levels of bounce on this list.
The Tempurpedic Supreme scored an overall performance score of 7.45, which ranks it among the bottom 7% of all mattresses tested to date. Looking exclusively at memory foam mattresses, the Tempurpedic Supreme ranks in the bottom 21% of all memory foam mattresses tested.
As far as price is concerned, this is one of the most affordable Tempurpedic models on the market. However, at $1,900, it is the most expensive model on this Costco list by a wide margin.
The special formulation of Tempurpedic’s memory foam provides sleepers a unique sensation, but we see it cause problems in many categories of our tests (response time, bounce, sex). But if you’re certain you want to try a Tempurpedic mattress, this is your most budget-friendly option.

Novaform ComfortGrande

Best For
- Extremely affordable — $500 for a queen-size
- Offers a traditional memory foam feel
- Side sleepers will find it most supportive
Considerations
- Not so great pressure relief
- Mattress spent a long time compressed in a box (110 days)
- Lower quality of foam material. Not helped by the overly long time it spent compressed in a box
Our Verdict
The Novaform ComfortGrande is a 13″ all-foam mattress, and one of the most popular Costco has to offer. Its design includes a memory foam top layer, a poly foam transitional layer, and a support foam base. Our model showed notable signs of damage to the foams, possibly due to the amount of time it spent boxed up before it arrived at our office for testing.
This mattress comes in a single firmness with a medium feel (5 out of 10).
The ComfortGrande offers moderate sinkage and bounce along with a high degree of body contouring hug. This is that classic memory foam feel that wraps and conforms to your body shape.
Based on our performance tests, the Novaform ComfortGrande earned a 7.34. This ranks it among the bottom 6% of all mattresses tested to date.
A queen-size ComforGrande from Costco only costs $480 at the time of this review. This is a savings of 67% compared to the average mattress we’ve tested (out of over 320 so far).

Sleep Science Copper Memory Foam

Best For
- Budget-friendly option for 14″ thick mattress
- Extremely fast response time
- Quick off-gassing duration
Considerations
- Cooling performance is lacking
- Motion transfer is 50% higher than average
- Low sex score from limited bounce and mediocre edge support
Our Verdict
The Sleep Science Copper is a 14″ memory foam with an all-foam design. Despite its total overall thickness, the comfort layer is only 3.0″ thick. The other 11″ is equally split between a convoluted support foam layer (for better breathability) and a solid support foam base.
This mattress only has one firmness option, which is a 7 out of 10 (where 10 is the most firm). This gives it a slightly firm feel.
Lying on the mattress, sleepers can expect moderate sinkage levels and a low amount of bounce. The contour and hug are limited by the mere 1.0″ of memory foam. The 2.0″ of poly foam combine to create a fairly balanced sensation that won’t have you feeling overly enveloped by the material.
When it comes to our performance tests, the Sleep Science Copper managed an overall score of 7.32. Not only is this within the bottom 5% of all mattresses tested to date, it is also on the bottom of our best Costco mattress list.
While it may not impress with its performance, its price may appeal. A queen-size Sleep Science Copper only costs $650. This is not the cheapest on this list, but the slightly firm feel and all-foam construction may be exactly what some budget-sleepers are looking for.
