Best For

  • Value price under $1000 for a queen

  • Very deep sinkage and low levels of bounce

Considerations

  • Low bounce hurts the sex score and isn’t great for couples
  • Cooling performance is below average
  • Slower material response time

Our Verdict

The Kirkland Signature Lakeridge by Sterns & Foster is a 14.5″ thick high-profile hybrid mattress that uses a combination of poly foam, memory foam, and a pocketed coil support system. It is available exclusively at Costco and for an amazingly good price.

The mattress has very deep sinkage and low levels of bounce.

It is available in a single firmness, 5 out of 10, giving the mattress a medium feel.

In our performance tests, the Kirkland Signature Lakeridge mattress has below-average overall performance, ranking in the bottom 15% of all mattresses tested to date. Looking exclusively at hybrid mattresses, the Kirkland Signature Lakeridge is among the top 10 worst hybrids tested to date (bottom 8%).

While the price point is compelling, the mattress struggled significantly with cooling, sex, and off-gassing during our tests. Pressure relief and response offered a better, but still middling performance. While motion transfer was fairly low and edge support good, it just isn’t enough for this mattress to earn a great score.

How is Kirkland Signature Lakeridge Different?

The Kirkland Signature Lakeridge is a hybrid mattress with a below-average performance, but also a price point that hits below average—a savings of 25% off of the average hybrid mattress.

Advantages

Advantages of the Kirkland Signature Lakeridge include slightly lower levels of motion transfer, improved edge support, and a thicker-than-average comfort layer.

The trial and warranty are also longer than average, which is advantageous if you’re concerned about mattress longevity.

Neutral Factors

This mattress has very deep sinkage and low levels of bounce. Both of these factors are more preferential based on an individual sleeper’s personal preferences and not necessarily good or bad.

Disadvantages

You’ll save a penny on the Kirkland mattress, but it’s not without its own set of disadvantages. This mattress has fair cooling performance, a slower material response time, and a fair sex score.

The low bounce is the killer for worse sex.

Cooling Test

The Kirkland Signature Lakeridge has a fair level of cooling performance. During our tests, I felt a slight to moderate level of heat retention around my body.

Baseline Temp.

76.2° F

Max Temp.

90.8° F

Ending Temp.

81.3° F

The mattress lacks any type of significant cooling design features, cooling layers, or cooling cover. The materials all feel quite basic and overall I am not impressed by the quality of the foams.

Ending Temp

  • Baseline Temperature – the temperature of the mattress before anyone lies on it
  • Maximum Temperature (0 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after lying on it for 15 minutes
  • Ending Temperature (5 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after being lied upon and having no one on it for 5 minutes

In our objective temperature tests, we measured a max surface level temperature of 90.8° F, which is 1.2° warmer than the average of 89.6°, based on all of our tests to date.

Heat Dissipation Over Time

When we consider the complete picture of objective data, subjective experience, and material analysis, I’m confident in my view that cooling performance is fair at best.

Sinkage Test

The Kirkland Signature Lakeridge has a very deep level of sinkage. In our sinkage tests, we measured a pressure point sinkage depth of 2.73”. This is 0.60” deeper than the average of 2.13”.

Sinkage Depth

2.73″

Sinkage Feel

Very Deep

The level of sinkage is documented in the image below.

Kirkland Signature Lakeridge Sinkage Test
Kirkland Signature Lakeridge Sinkage Test

The very deep level of sinkage creates more of an enveloping feel around the body. However, because the mattress uses a mix of multiple poly foam layers and just one memory foam layer, the body contouring hug isn’t excessive.

Despite the fact that there is enough foam on top of coils for this to be considered a hybrid, it has far more of a traditional coil mattress feel.

In any case, the sinkage depth is enough to be classified as “very deep”.

For many side sleepers this feel can be ideal. However, many back and stomach sleepers may find the sinkage depth is simply too extreme.

8.6

Motion Transfer Test

The Kirkland Signature Lakeridge has a low level of motion transfer. During our tests, we measured an acceleration range of 8.09 m/s². This is 8% less motion transfer than the average of 8.75 m/s².

Max. Acceleration

2.59 m/s²

Min. Acceleration

-5.50 m/s²

Accel. Range

8.09 m/s²

The Kirkland has a significantly thicker than average 6.25” comfort layer built from quilted foam, poly foam, and memory foam. These foam layers do a great job at reducing energy and motion on the mattress.

The level of motion transfer is also documented in the video below.

In our motion transfer chart, which visualizes our accelerometer data, we can see the highest motion peaks from 0 to 0.15 seconds.

We see reduced motion thereafter, but also motion that remains spiky up until 0.51 seconds. By 0.65 seconds we’ve returned to near-zero levels of energy.

Kirkland Signature Lakeridge Motion Transfer Chart
Kirkland Signature Lakeridge Motion Transfer Chart

While I do wish the motion duration was a bit shorter it’s not bad by any stretch. Given the lower-than-average acceleration levels, I expect most sleepers will find this level of motion to be satisfactory.

8.2

Response Test

The Kirkland Signature Lakeridge has a material responsiveness that is a mixed bag.

Mostly Recovered

0.3 sec.

Complete Recovery

1.9 sec.

In our mostly recovered test, we saw a material recovery in 0.3 seconds. This is 0.11 seconds faster than the average 0.41 seconds. That said, the fully recovered response time was significantly worse.

The level of responsiveness is documented in the video below.

In our full recovery test, we saw a material responsiveness of 1.9 seconds. This is 1.0 seconds slower than the average of 0.90 seconds.

While most of the foam layers within the Kirkland Signature rebound back to shape quickly, the memory foam layer takes considerably longer to reform back to shape.

For more sensitive sleepers this could cause the mattress to feel more difficult to move around on.

Bounce Test

The Kirkland Signature Lakeridge has a low level of bounce. During our tests, we measured a total bounce height of 6.99”. This is 2.69” less bounce than the average of 9.68”.

Max. Depth

Max Bounce Height

The level of bounce is also documented in the video below.

The lower bounce is the result of the thicker-than-average foam comfort layers. This low bounce is greatly facilitating the lower levels of motion transfer we measured.

However, it’s also the reason for the worse sex performance and greater difficulty in moving around on the mattress. Typically, I like to see 8-12” of total bounce height. Suffice to say, Kirkland’s Signature is a good bit short of that.

8.9

Edge Support Test

The Kirkland Signature Lakeridge has a good level of edge support. In our sitting edge support tests, we measured a sitting sinkage compression of 4.0”. This is just slightly better than the average sitting sinkage of 4.03”.

Lying Support

The level of edge support while seated is documented in the images below.

While sitting directly on the edge of the mattress I felt well supported and there was no collapse of materials. Lying edge support was excellent.

While lying directly on the edge of the mattress I felt well supported in all sleeping positions. The Kirkland Signature uses two rows of reinforced edge support coils. These coils are helping to create robust support for both sitting and lying.

7.3

Sex Test

The Kirkland Signature has a fair level of sex performance. While noise, pressure relief, and edge support all earned good scores, cooling and bounce left much to be desired.

Sex FactorFactor WeightScoreRating
Bounce65%6.8Low
Edge Support20%8.8Good
Noise5%8.0Moderate
Pressure Relief5%8.0Good
Cooling5%7.0Fair

Bounce in particular is problematic. The mattress simply has a low level of bounce at only 6.99”. The lower bounce does help to reduce motion transfer, but it also significantly negatively impacts dance without pants performance.

Kirkland Signature Lakeridge Edge Sitting

Without a higher level of bounce a mattress simply cannot create the right conditions for ideal amorous activity.

8.0

Pressure Relief Test

The Kirkland Signature Lakeridge has a good level of pressure relief, though it doesn’t rise to the level of “excellent” or “outstanding”. During our tests, I felt a slight level of pressure points build on my body.

Comfort Layer

6.25″

Support Layer

8.25″

The mattress is equipped with a 6.25” comfort layer. This is notably thicker than the average comfort layer thickness, which is 4.1”.

That said, while the thickness of the comfort layer is great, the quality of the foam layers leaves much to be desired. None of the foam layers look or feel especially high quality.

Kirkland Signature Lakeridge Foot
Kirkland Signature Lakeridge Foot

While I am pleased that they are thicker than average I am also deeply concerned about their performance and durability long term. These foams are similar to other foams I’ve tested in the past that have had longevity issues, sagging, and more significant body impressions.

All that to say, the Kirkland Signature has good pressure relief, but some sleepers could find it degrades over time.

In looking at our pressure mapping test, overall performance is good, with expected pressure points while lying on my side at the hip and shoulders. I am a little concerned that the max pressure hit 1.76 PSI on the shoulder. As pressure nears 2.0 PSI it starts to feel more problematic.

Given that my body at 140 pounds hit a 1.76 PSI is concerning, as heavier-weighted bodies are more likely to feel greater levels of pressure.

Company

The Kirkland Signature Lakeridge mattress is exclusively sold by Costco and is backed by Costco’s trial and warranty.

This gives the mattress a 365-night trial and 20-year warranty. Shipping and returns are free as well.

Compared to average, the Costco trial is longer than average (average is 173 nights) but the warranty is shorter than most. Of all mattresses, we’ve tested to date, 24% have lifetime warranties and the average of the other 76% of mattresses is 13 years.

How firm is Kirkland Signature Lakeridge?

The Kirkland Signature Lakeridge has a medium feel, 5 out of 10, on the firmness scale.

Firmness Chart 5

This is just a touch softer than the most popular firmness (medium-firm—6 out of 10), but is still supportive enough for a wide range of sleepers.

Support & Sleeping Positions

The Kirkland Signature Lakeridge has excellent support. During our tests, I felt well-supported in all sleeping positions.

The mattress uses an 8.25” support layer. This is slightly thicker than the average 7.9” support layer, based on all of our tests to date. The mattress is available in a single firmness, medium, which gives it a 5 out of 10 firmness (where 10 is the most firm).

Kirkland Signature Lakeridge Sinkage
Kirkland Signature Lakeridge Sinkage

At this firmness, it is appropriate to most body types and sleeping positions. Notably, the mattress does not use a zoned coil unit.

This is expected for a mattress at this price point, as you typically don’t see zoned coil units until the $1.5K price point. Overall, I’m pleased with the level of support and expect most sleepers will find support to be sufficient.

Product Evolution

The Kirkland Signature Lakeridge hybrid was introduced by Costco at the end of 2020. Since its release, there have been no notable changes made to the design or materials used in this mattress.

Prior to the launch of the Lakeridge Costco sold their Kirkland Hope Bay mattress. The Hope Bay was also “By Stearns & Foster” and had a similar material construction and design to the Lakeridge. However, the Hope Bay has since been discontinued and the Lakeridge is the only mattress within the Kirkland brand currently sold at Costco.
