Best For

  • A queen mattress mattress under $500
  • Fast material response time
  • Slightly faster off-gassing than average

Considerations

  • Scores in the bottom 5% of all mattresses tested to date
  • Higher levels of motion transfer
  • Unsuitable for heavier sleepers over 200 lbs.

Our Verdict

The SweetNight Starry Night mattress is a 14″ memory foam hybrid mattress that has a thin cover, memory foam, poly foam, and a 10″ pocketed coil base.

This mattress has very minimal sinkage and a moderate level of bounce. It lacks deep contour and just has a very balanced feel.

The mattress comes in a single firmness, 6 out of 10, and with a medium-firm feel.

In our performance tests, the Sweetnight Starry Night mattress disappoints in many areas. The overall score of 7.35 places this mattress in the bottom 5% of all mattresses tested to date.

The price is extremely low (only $479 for a queen) which can make this an attractive option for budget sleepers. Even so, many sleepers will find this mattress to be lacking in performance and material quality.

How is SweetNight Starry Night Different?

The SweetNight Starry Night is a memory foam hybrid with an overall performance score that is significantly worse than average and a price tag that is also significantly lower—70% less than the average memory foam hybrid.

Advantages

Aside from the extremely low price, there are not a ton of advantages for this mattress. The material response time is slightly faster than average and the off-gassing is faster than average as well, but in the grand scheme of things, these are relatively minor performance factors and not really significant enough to carry the whole performance.

Neutral Factors

Neutral factors include very minimal sinkage and moderate levels of bounce. Both of these factors can vary in significance based on an individual sleeper’s profile and preference.

Disadvantages

Disadvantages of the Sweetnight Starry Night include worse cooling performance, higher levels of motion transfer, mediocre lying edge support, poor sex performance, and lacking pressure relief. This mattress scores below average in 6 out of the 8 performance factors we test for.

Sweetnight Starry Night Material Pushback
7.0

Cooling Test

The Sweetnight Starry Night mattress has a fair level of cooling performance. During our tests, I felt a moderate level of heat retention around my body.

Baseline Temp.

74.8° F

Max Temp.

89.4° F

Ending Temp.

81.5° F

The mattress uses fairly basic foams that seem to retain more heat. The hybrid design definitely helps, as it’s bringing more air into the mattress. However, it’s not enough to overcome the foam quality and memory foam comfort layer.

Max Temp.

Sweetnight Starry Night Cooling Test After
Sweetnight Starry Night Cooling Test After
  • Baseline Temperature – the temperature of the mattress before anyone lies on it
  • Maximum Temperature (0 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after lying on it for 15 minutes
  • Ending Temperature (5 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after being lied upon and having no one on it for 5 minutes

In our objective temperature tests, we measured a max surface level temperature of 89.4°, which is about average. After getting off the mattress the temperature declined by 4.3° from minutes 0 to 1, which is 0.4° warmer than average.

Heat Dissipation Over Time

Sweetnight Starry Night Heat Dissipation Chart

When I consider the objective data, my subjective experience, and an analysis of the materials, this is a mattress I find has only fair cooling performance. Those who describe themselves as “hot” or “warm” sleepers are likely to find this mattress insufficiently cool.

Sinkage Test

The Sweetnight Starry Night has a very minimal level of sinkage. During our tests, we measured a pressure point sinkage test of 1.66”. This is 0.47” less sinkage than the average of 2.13”.

Sinkage Depth

1.66″

Sinkage Feel

Very Minimal

The level of sinkage is documented in the image below.

Sweetnight Starry Night Sinkage Test
Sweetnight Starry Night Sinkage Test

The mattress creates more of a floating feeling where sleepers lie “on” the mattress as opposed to sinking down “in” the mattress. With only 2.75” of comfort foam there just isn’t much foam in which sleepers can sink into it.

As a result, the body just doesn’t receive a significant level of hugging contour. To be comfortable on the Start Night you’ll really need to prefer the floating on top of the mattress feel.

7.1

Motion Transfer Test

The Sweetnight Starry Night has a moderate level of motion transfer. During our tests, we measured a total acceleration range of 11.50 m/s². This is 32% more motion transfer than the average of 8.70 m/s².

Max. Acceleration

5.38 m/s²

Min. Acceleration

-6.12 m/s²

Accel. Range

11.50 m/s²

The combination of a relatively thin 2.75” comfort layer and relatively lower quality coil unit create the right material conditions for higher motion transfer.

The level of motion transfer is also documented in the video below.

In our motion transfer chart, which visualizes our accelerometer data we can see the highest motion spike from 0 to 0.15 seconds.

Immediately thereafter we see a significant motion decline and by 0.82 seconds we’ve returned to near-zero levels of energy.

Sweetnight Starry Night Motion Transfer Chart

Neither the motion spikes nor motion duration are especially good. As a result, some sleepers may find the level of motion is simply too much.

9.2

Response Test

The Sweetnight Starry Night has a very fast responsiveness. During our mostly recovered test, we measured 0.3 seconds for the mattress to recover. This is 0.11 seconds faster than the average of 0.41 seconds, based on all of our tests to date.

Mostly Recovered

0.3 sec.

Complete Recovery

0.7 sec.

The level of responsiveness is documented in the video below.

In our fully recovered test, we measured 0.7 seconds for the mattress to fully recover back to shape.

This is 0.20 seconds faster than the average of 0.90 seconds. While these response speeds aren’t instant, they are still plenty fast to aid in ease of movement and avoid any type of stuck feeling on the mattress.

Bounce Test

The Sweetnight Starry Night has a moderate level of bounce. During our tests, we measured a total bounce height of 8.22″. This is 1.44” more bounce than than the average of 9.66”.

Max. Depth

The level of bounce is also documented in the video below.

Bounce is on the lower side of my ideal range, but still within it. The lower bounce does help to restrain motion, at least to some degree.

In addition, we still have enough bounce to facilitate ease of movement. That said, 8.22” of bounce is on the lower end with respect to sex performance.

7.4

Edge Support Test

The Sweetnight Starry Night has a fair level of edge support (good for sitting, but mediocre for lying).

Max Sinkage

4.00″

Lying Support

Mediocre

In our sitting edge support test, we measured 4.0” of sitting edge compression. This is 0.02” less sitting sinkage than the average of 4.02”.

While the objective measurement is within our “good” category I just don’t feel tremendously well supported. The materials aren’t collapsing, but it feels right on the edge of collapse. The fact I only weigh 140 pounds is likely helping it look better than the reality.

While sitting on the edge with a 60 pound weighted vest we can see there is notably more sinkage and pressures on the materials.

The level of edge support while seated is documented in the images below.

Sitting, 140 lbs.

Sweetnight Starry Night Sitting Edge Support
Sweetnight Starry Night Sitting Edge Support

Sitting, 200 lbs.

Sweetnight Starry Night Sitting Edge Support Heavy
Sweetnight Starry Night Sitting Edge Support Heavy

Lying edge support was mediocre at best. While lying directly on the edge of the mattress I did not feel well supported in any sleeping position.

The level of edge support while lying is documented in the images below.

Lying on Edge, 140 lbs.

Lying on Edge, 200 lbs.

The very edge of the mattress feels as if it’s collapsing under the weight of the body while lying on the edge. It creates a notable downward angle away from the mattress that negatively impacts support.

There is no edge support system on the mattress. This lack of perimeter reinforced coils or edge support foam is leading to the weak edge support we experienced while sitting and lying.

7.9

Sex Test

The Sweetnight Starry Night has a fair level of sex performance. On the positive side, noise is low, however, that’s where the notable pros end. Sitting edge support is good, but far from great.

Sex FactorFactor WeightScoreRating
Bounce65%7.6Moderate
Edge Support20%8.8Good
Noise5%10Minimal
Pressure Relief5%6.0Mediocre
Cooling5%7.0Fair

In addition, we only have a moderate level of bounce at 8.22”, mediocre pressure relief, and fair cooling performance. The combination of these factors results in a dance without pants performance that leaves much to be desired.

Sweetnight Starry Night Sitting

Pressure Relief Test

The Sweetnight Starry Night has a mediocre level of pressure relief. During our tests, I felt a moderate level of pressure point build up on my body.

Comfort Layer

2.75″

Support Layer

11.25″

The mattress just doesn’t have the material quality or material thickness to create ideal pressure relief. The Starry Night uses just 2.75” of comfort materials.

This is considerably thinner than the average comfort layer, which is 4.1”, based on all of our tests to date. Ultimately, the foams just feel really basic. Given the price point, it’s hard to complain too much.

Nevertheless, you should not buy the Starry Night with any grand expectations of an exquisite pressure relief performance.

Company

Company terms from Sweetnight are okay, but not great. The mattress has a 100-night trial period and a 10-year warranty.

The average trial period is 174-nights so this trial is quite a bit shorter than average. Of all 240+ mattresses we’ve tested, 24% of mattresses have lifetime warranties and the average of other 76% of mattresses is 13 years. This 10-year warranty is shorter than most.

How firm is Sweetnight Starry Night?

The Sweetnight Starry Night has a medium-firm feel, a 6 out of 10 on the firmness scale. This firmness is widely popular and probably the most common firmness of all mattresses we test.

Firmness Chart 6

Support & Sleeping Positions

The Sweetnight Starry Night has a mediocre level of support. During our tests, I felt that the support dynamic was severely lacking. In addition, support is negatively impacted by both mediocre pressure relief and less-than-great edge support.

Sweetnight Starry Night Hero1

In terms of thickness, the Starry Night has plenty of height at 11.25” of support materials. This is notably thicker than the average 7.9” support layer, based on all of our tests. However, as with the 2.75” comfort layer, the quality of the coil unit and support foam just isn’t good.

These material components look and feel extremely basic. While lying on the mattress you can immediately feel the relative support performance.

When you couple these issues with the weaker edge support and weaker pressure relief, you have a total support dynamic that is notably lacking.

As with many other areas on the Sweetnight, given the price point, this performance isn’t unreasonable.

Sweetnight Starry Night Corner

That said, sleepers should tune their expectations accordingly. This is an ultra-budget mattress, as a result, performance and material quality are simply not going to be at the same level as a higher-end, more expensive mattress.

The Cover

This mattress has a thin cover with a diamond-stitched pattern and white accents. The fabric is a polyester-bamboo blend which gives it a soft and stretchy feel.

The Comfort Layer

The comfort layer of this mattress is only 2.75″ thick, thinner than the average comfort layer. It has two foam layers—a 1.25″ memory foam followed by a 1.5″ poly foam.

This is a bit thinner of a comfort layer than I typically like to see. Too thin of a comfort layer can cause pressure relief issues or support issues, as sleepers will engage more with the less comfortable support materials below.

Sweetnight Starry Night Comfort Layer Compression

The Support Layer

Below the comfort layer of the Sweetnight Starry Night mattress is the support layer. This layer is made up of 10” coil units and a 1.25″ support foam base.

A coil unit this thick is extremely rare. 6” and 8” coil units are by far the more common type.

It’s unusual to see a 10” coil unit, especially since we didn’t see any measurable performance advantages with the thicker coil unit.
