Best For
- Adjustable firmness (from medium to medium-firm)
- Excellent pressure relief up to 300 lbs.
- Outstanding edge support
Considerations
- Noisy as the air zones compress and expand
- Not really a true “soft” or “firm” mattress as the firmness dial makes it seem
Our Verdict
The Natural Form Refresh mattress is an 11″ thick adjustable hybrid made of poly foam for the comfort layer, specialized air zones for support, and a thin layer of support foam at the base.
The design for the hybrid unit combines pocked coils with a foam encasement. It has a firmness dial that adjusts the firmness with a range of 5-6.5 out of 10 (where 10 is the most firm).
It has extremely deep sinkage and a moderate level of bounce that gives it a lively medium feel.
The mattress has an overall score of 8.69, which places it within the top 52% of mattresses we’ve tested to date. However, this overall score is made up of a few low categories and more exceptionally performing ones.
The biggest concern for most will probably be the $3,101 price tag, which is quite a bit more than the average adjustable hybrid. But, if you prioritize the categories it does will in and want this adjustable firmness feature, it can still be a solid choice for many sleepers.

How is the Natural Form Refresh Different?
The Natural Form Refresh mattress has a number of factors that separate it from other hybrid mattresses. Honestly, it’s one of the most unique mattresses we’ve tested to date (and I don’t use that word lightly).
Advantages
The Natural Form Refresh mattress has an adjustable firmness dial that allows the sleeper to customize exact firmness.
If your needs change from night to night or over an extended period of time, the Refresh can accommodate that change easily.

Firmness ranges from 5-6.5 out of 10, so the variation isn’t huge, but it’s wide enough to suit a wider range of sleeper preferences than a single firmness mattress.
The pocketed air zones compress and expand with pressure applied, much like a pocketed support coil would, but their feel is very different.

Combining the air zone system with the plush feel of the wool cover, results in a mattress that has great pressure relief while maintaining a sense of restrained hug and generalized contour.
Next, the mattress is offered in a few extra sizes compared to a standard mattress. Extra sizes include Split King, Split Cal. King, and the Olympic Queen as well.
A split King or Cal. King is handy for bedrooms located upstairs or bedrooms with narrow pass-throughs. The Olympic Queen mattress is 66×80″, 6″ wider than a traditional queen mattress.
Finally, it has excellent cooling and virtually no off-gassing upon unboxing.
Neutral Factors
As for the preferential factors, the Natural Form Refresh mattress has ultra deep sinkage. Some of this will obviously depend on your adjusted firmness setting, but with medium firmness it still measured 38% deeper than all mattresses tested to date.

Bounce was just about average, if not a little more. But again, this will depend on your current firmness setting.
Disadvantages
Obviously, for a mattress with extra, distinct features, it’s going to cost more. In this case, it is 36% more expensive than the average adjustable mattress. Compared to all 269 mattresses across all types tested to date, it is 121% more expensive.
Motion transfer levels were also quite high. Those who find themselves waking to movements from their partner will most likely experience similar disturbances on this mattress.
Cooling Test
Cooling performance on the Natural Form Refresh was excellent. In our tests, I felt no significant level of heat retention around my body.
Baseline Temp.
82.9° F
Max Temp.
87.8° F
Ending Temp.
84.1° F
The mattress design helps to significantly improve breathability and avoid heat retention.
Most notably, the Natural Form uses a system of air zone supports. Every slight movement you make forces air in and out of the pumps, creating enhanced airflow on the mattress as a whole.
Max Temp.

Ending Temp

- Baseline Temperature – the temperature of the mattress before anyone lies on it
- Maximum Temperature (0 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after lying on it for 15 minutes
- Ending Temperature (5 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after being lied upon and having no one on it for 5 minutes
If we look at our objective data, we measured a maximum surface level temperature of 87.8° F. This is 1.8° cooler than the average max temp (based on all of our tests to date).
The heat dissipation curve was less than amazing. From 0 to 1 minutes the max temperature declined by only 2.9°. This is notably worse than the average 0 to 1 minute decline of 4.7°.
Heat Dissipation Over Time

However, I’m inclined to overlook this due to the 1.7° cooler starting temperature. Overall, based on my subjective experience, material analysis, and objective data, I found the cooling performance to be excellent.
Sinkage Test
The Natural Form Refresh has an extremely deep level of sinkage. In our tests, we measured 2.95” of pressure point sinkage depth. This is 0.81” deeper than the average sinkage depth of 2.14”.
The level of sinkage is documented in the image below.

The very top layer of the mattress is 1.0” of wool. This wool layer is extremely soft, so much so that you sink straight through it.
As a result, it’s not surprising that we’re seeing a deeper level of sinkage.
The top layer of wool creates a more restrained hug around the body.
It’s incredibly soft, doesn’t create an exacting contour around the body, and also adjusts quickly to your movements.
So while there is undoubtedly a deeper level of sinkage, it doesn’t create the more concerning deep, dramatic contouring hug that a more typical all foam or memory foam mattress would.
Motion Transfer Test
The Natural Form Refresh has a high level of motion transfer. In our tests, we measured an acceleration range of 13.07 m/s². This is 49% more than the average motion transfer (based on all of our tests to date), which is 8.78 m/s².
The level of motion transfer is documented in the video below.
While the wool and 3.0” poly foam comfort layer do help to eliminate some motion, the air zone support system is without question creating a more significant level of motion transfer.
Max. Acceleration
6.18 m/s²
Min. Acceleration
-6.89 m/s²
Accel. Range
13.07 m/s²
If we look at our motion transfer chart, which visualizes our accelerometer data, we can see a high level of energy from 0.00 to 0.21 seconds. Motion begins to decline thereafter, but remains moderately high until 0.91 seconds.

Both the motion intensity and motion duration are significantly higher and longer than average. Mattresses with the lowest motion transfer are able to fully disperse energy within 0.3 seconds. Overall, the Natural Form just isn’t great when it comes to motion transfer and motion isolation.
Response Test
The Natural Form Refresh has an extremely fast material response. In our tests, we measured a mostly recovered response time of 0.2 seconds and a fully recovered response time of 0.3 seconds. This is as fast as it ever gets.
Mostly Recovered
0.2 sec.
Complete Recovery
0.3 sec.
The level of responsiveness is documented in the video below.
The Refresh mattress is tied with other mattresses for the fastest responding mattress we’ve tested to date. Most of the response time is driven by the top comfort layers.
The 3.0” poly foam layer has the same type of resiliency, spring back, and response that a layer of natural latex has. It instantly rebounds back to shape when pressure is no longer applied.
Bounce Test
The Natural Form Refresh has a high level of bounce. In our tests, we measured 9.79” of total bounce height. This is 0.26” more bounce than the average bounce height.
Based on all of our tests to date, on average we have measured 9.53” of bounce.
Max. Depth
6.13″
Max. Rebound
3.66″
Total Bounce
9.79″
Having a moderate level of bounce on a mattress is beneficial as it helps to improve ease of movement and enhance sex.
Max. Sinkage Depth

Max Bounce Height

The level of bounce is also documented in the video below.
Ideally, I like to see a bounce in the 8-12” range. The Refresh mattress is within that range.
As a result, I don’t foresee any major issues when it comes to bounce. It’s enough to see the benefits, but not so much or so little as to create negative impacts from the bounce.
Edge Support Test
Edge support for both sitting and lying is outstandingly good on the Natural Form Refresh.
Max Sinkage
3.00″
Lying Support
Outstanding
In our sitting edge support tests, we measured just 3.00” of sitting edge sinkage.
This is 1.04” less sinkage than the average of 4.04” (based on all of our tests to date).
In general, I want to see 4.0” of sitting sinkage or less. The Refresh mattress easily beat my ideal benchmark. The Refresh mattress is tied for the 4th best edge support we have tested to date.
The level of edge support while seated is documented in the images below.
Sitting, 140 lbs.

Sitting, 200 lbs.

If you look at the material design, it makes sense. The Natural Form Refresh has a robust edge support system via a thick perimeter of support foam.
At the foot of the mattress, it has an even thicker all-support foam section, creating an amazingly good level of support at the foot of the mattress.

Lying edge support was equally as impressive. Again, the super thick perimeter edge foam does most of the heavy lifting.
The level of edge support while lying is documented in the images below.
In all sleeping positions, I felt well supported even when lying directly on the edge of the mattress.
Lying on Edge, 140 lbs.

Lying on Edge, 200 lbs.

Sex Test
The Natural Form Refresh has good sex performance. Based on the results of our sex formula, it is slightly better than most, in fact.
The below table shows the factors that make up our sex score and their weighted impact.
Sex Factor | Factor Weight | Score | Rating |
---|---|---|---|
Bounce | 65% | 8.6 | High |
Edge Support | 20% | 10 | Outstanding |
Noise | 5% | 6.0 | High |
Pressure Relief | 5% | 9.0 | Excellent |
Cooling | 5% | 9.0 | Excellent |
This is a good score and the mattress does a lot of things right. But it also comes with some disadvantages as well.
The Natural Form Refresh mattress has good bounce and good edge support, which does help the overall score. Honestly, the biggest thing hurting this mattress is the noise.

It has moderate to loud noise. It is not uncommon for a hybrid mattress to be a bit noisier than a foam-based mattress. But the sound that this mattress makes is pretty uncommon.
As the air zones compress and expand, it almost sounds like a person gasping for air.
The air zone support system makes it so both sex participants and the mattress itself will be trying to catch their breath at the same time.
Pressure Relief Test
Pressure relief on the Natural Form Refresh mattress is excellent. In our tests, I felt ample pressure relief in all sleeping positions. The mattress uses a 4.0” comfort layer built from 1.0” of wool and 3.0” of responsive poly foam.
Comfort Layer
4.0″
Support Layer
7.0″
The Refresh has a far more restrained type of hug around the body. It allows for a deeper level of sinkage, but the combination of wool and poly foam creates a more generalized hug around the body.

The comfort layer is sufficiently thick enough that, in combination with the air zone support system, sleepers will have plenty of pressure relief, transitional support, and deep compression support.
Overall, I’m pleased with the level of pressure relief.
Off-Gassing Test
The Natural Form Refresh mattress has no smell. Consequently, it takes 0 days for the mattress to off gas. The average off-gassing period takes about 7 days.
Initial Smell Strength
None
Off-Gassing Period
0 days
Company
As a company, Natural Form offers a 100-night trial period and a 10-year warranty. Shipping and returns are both free as well.
Company Factor | Factor Weight | Score | Data |
---|---|---|---|
Trial Period | 15% | 8.0 | 100 nights |
Warranty | 10% | 8.0 | 10 years |
Shipping | 5% | 10 | $0 |
Returns | 20% | 10 | $0 |
Trust | 50% | 6.0 | Mediocre |
Country of Origin | 0% | USA |
Lastly, the mattress is made in the U.S. Overall, there’s just not much to not like about the terms and conditions that come with the Refresh mattress.
How firm is the Natural Form Refresh?
The Natural Refresh mattress has an adjustable firmness dial that includes three levels— soft, optimal, and firm. Simply rotate the dial to the left or right to adjust firmness.

As the dial rotates, the system regulates the amount of air that is escaping through the lines. As the escaping air adjusts, the comfort level and firmness also change.
When I tested out the firmness range, I didn’t feel like the firmness was significantly changed by the dial. However, it’s more that the level of support pushback is increased / decreased.
As a result, it’s more of an increase / decrease in sinkage depth and less about significant change in firmness.
This isn’t to say there is no change in firmness, there is, as indicated in the ratings below. But it’s not as dramatic as many sleepers may think based on the labels.
- Soft: 5 out of 10
- Optimum / Medium: 6 out of 10
- Firm: 6.5 out of 10
Realistically, the mattress only spans from 5 to 6.5 out of 10. In most cases, we would consider a 4 out of 10 to be a soft mattress and an 8 out of 10 to be a firm mattress.
Support & Sleeping Positions
The Natural Form Refresh mattress has excellent support. Throughout our tests, I felt well supported in all sleeping positions.
The Refresh mattress has a truly unique design. “Unique” is a word I don’t like to use, as it so rarely is true. In the case of the Refresh mattress, we really do have a unique design.
There is a mix of support foam, edge perimeter encasement foam, foam encased air zones, and a zoned configuration of materials that will create more / less support where you need it.

This design, while far more complex than many on the market, creates a highly supportive feel for both sleeping, lounging, and amorous activities.
I’m impressed by the unique nature of the air zone support system, which did a great job of providing both transitional and deep compression support in our tests.
The ability to adjust the firmness allows you to further tune the mattress to create the right type of support for your body. I am confident that the mattress will create sufficient support for all sleeping positions up to 300 pounds.

Materials
From top to bottom, there are two layers on the Natural Form Refresh mattress. These layers include:
- 3.0″ poly foam
- 6.0″ air zones
- 1.0″ support foam

The Cover
The cover of the Refresh mattress is a natural Merino wool. Wool helps to wick away moisture and stay cool throughout the night, regardless of the temperature.

In addition, the cover is removable and washable for easy maintenance.
The Comfort Layer
The comfort layer is made up of 3.0″ of CertiPUR-Us certified poly foam. The foal has a balanced feel, fast response, and limited heat retention.

The Support Layer
Below the comfort foam is their patented support system. This support layer is made up of three layers.
- Transitional Foam
- Air Zones
- Support Foam
#1. Transitional Foam
First, there is a blue thin layer of foam that acts as a transitional foam between the comfort layer and air zones.
#2. Air Zones
Next, comes air zones. These are accordion-like cylinders that compress and expand as pressure is applied.
They perform a bit like pocketed coils, but have a distinctly different feel.

These zones are linked together with a single air line that circulates air into the zones from lines located at the base. These lines allow the adjustable firmness feature and help keep the mattress cool as well.

#3. Support Foam
Within the comfort layer, there is a bottom slab of fluted foam that helps to hold the air lines in place and prevent any movement of the zoned system.
Thick perimeter foam wraps around the entire edge of the mattress, encasing the zoned system and also improving edge performance.

Product Evolution
The Natural Form Refresh mattress launched in 2021. Since launch there have been no major changes to the design or materials.
