Best For

  • A memory foam mattress under $400
  • Low levels of bounce with a classic memory foam feel
  • Slightly less motion transfer than average

Considerations

  • Struggles with heat retention and slow material response time, classic pitfalls of budget memory foam
  • Poor sex performance due to low bounce and sinking feeling

Our Verdict

The Lucid mattress is a 9.5″ memory foam mattress made of memory foam, transitional poly foam, and a support foam base.

This mattress has moderate levels of sinkage and very low bounce, giving the mattress a traditional memory foam feel. Edge support and cooling definitely struggle here and the mattress can create a bit of a “stuck” feel.

This mattress is available in two firmness levels, plush or medium-firm. We tested the medium-firm version, which was 6 out of 10 on the firmness scale. The mattress is also available in a plush option, which we estimate to be a 4 out of 10.

In our performance tests, the Lucid didn’t impress, scoring a 7.11 overall, which ranks the mattress in the bottom 3% of all mattresses tested to date.

If there is any advantage to the Lucid, it has to be the price tag. The Lucid comes in at only $390 for a queen mattress, 66% less than the average memory foam mattress. If you are on an extremely tight budget or just looking for a temporary sleeping situation, the Lucid could fit the bill. Even so, there are numerous other mattresses on the market that offer better performance at similar price points.

How is Lucid Different?

The Lucid mattress is a 9.5″ memory foam mattress with below-average overall performance and a price tag that is also significantly less than average—66% less than the average memory foam mattress for a savings of $774 on a queen mattress.

Advantages

The biggest advantage of the Lucid mattress is clearly the price. At only $390 for a queen mattress, the Lucid provides big savings. But that’s essentially where the advantages stop.

Neutral Factors

This mattress has moderate levels of sinkage and very low levels of bounce. There are neutral factors and neither good nor bad, but could be pros or cons depending on what type of feel you’re looking for.

Disadvantages

Disadvantages include worse cooling performance, slightly more motion transfer than average, and struggling edge support. Sex performance is also not great, largely due to the low bounce and weak edges.

Lucid Mattress Relaxing
Lucid Mattress Relaxing

The Lucid mattress is only 9.5″ which is 2.5″ thinner than the average mattress. The thinner profile gives the Lucid a thinner comfort layer and worse pressure relief, especially for side sleepers or heavier bodies.

7.0

Cooling Test

The Lucid has fair cooling. During our tests, I felt a moderate to high level of heat retention around my body. The mattress seemed to really struggle to release heat and remain breathable during our tests.

Baseline Temp.

76.8° F

Max Temp.

90.8° F

Ending Temp.

81.6° F

When we look at the material design and material choices, it’s not a surprising result. This is an all foam mattress that’s equipped with a 2.5” memory foam layer on top. That memory foam feels dense and gets notably harder when it’s cold and softer when it’s warm.

Max Temp.

  • Baseline Temperature – the temperature of the mattress before anyone lies on it
  • Maximum Temperature (0 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after lying on it for 15 minutes
  • Ending Temperature (5 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after being lied upon and having no one on it for 5 minutes

This is a very traditional type of memory foam, which includes a more traditional difficulty in remaining cool. The memory foam is infused with gel, which according to Lucid, that gel memory foam “pulls heat away from the body…”.

That said, that design intention did not appear to make a significant impact on cooling performance, either objectively based on our thermal measurements or based on my subjective feel of the mattress.

In our objective temperature tests, we measured a max surface level temperature of 90.8° F. This is 1.1° more than the average of 89.7° F, based on all of our tests to date. When we consider the combination of objective data, my subjective experiences, and an analysis of the materials, I’m confident in my view that cooling is fair.

Heat Dissipation Over Time

Sinkage Test

The Lucid has moderate sinkage. During our tests, we measured a pressure point sinkage depth of 2.05″. This is 0.10″ less sinkage than the average sinkage depth of 2.15″, based on all of our tests to date.

Sinkage Depth

2.05″

Sinkage Feel

Moderate

The level of sinkage is documented in the image below.

Lucid Mattress Sinkage Test
Lucid Mattress Sinkage Test

The mattress creates a dramatic body contouring hug and has a classic memory foam feel. When you first lie down on the mattress it’s quite hard, but it gradually softens as it contours to the exact shape of your body.

Fortunately, the Lucid’s moderate sinkage depth will help to prevent the mattress from creating an excessively deep crater.

Even so, the combination of more traditional memory foam, dramatic body contouring hug, and slower material responsiveness (which we’ll discuss further down the page), does make it more difficult to move around on this mattress and get out of bed.

8.2

Motion Transfer Test

The Lucid has a low level of motion transfer. During our tests, we measured a total acceleration range of 8.91 m/s². This is 1% more motion transfer than the average of 8.78 m/s².

Max. Acceleration

3.46 m/s²

Min. Acceleration

-5.45 m/s²

Accel. Range

8.91 m/s²

When it comes to motion transfer, all foam memory foam mattresses excel, especially those that contain more traditional memory foam, which is what Lucid uses. The all foam design, low bounce, and slower material responsiveness, are all working together to help reduce the level of motion transfer.

The level of motion transfer is also documented in the video below.

In our motion transfer chart, which visualizes our accelerometer data, we can see the highest motion peaks from 0 to 0.14 seconds. Motion declines significantly immediately thereafter and by 0.51 seconds we’ve returned to near-zero levels of energy.

Mattresses with the lowest motion are able to disperse all energy within 0.3 seconds. The Lucid isn’t quite at that level, but it’s not far off either. Overall, I’m pleased with the level of motion.

Lucid Mattress Motion Transfer Chart
Lucid Mattress Motion Transfer Chart

The total motion intensity was just a touch above average, but still well within the low threshold, while the motion duration was incredibly quick at just 0.51 seconds. I don’t expect this level of motion transfer will be a problem for most sleepers.

5.0

Response Test

The Lucid has a very slow material response. In our mostly recovered test, we measured a recovery speed of 1.0 seconds, which is 0.58 seconds slower than the average of 0.42 seconds, based on all of our tests to date.

Mostly Recovered

1.0 sec.

Complete Recovery

3.0 sec.

The level of responsiveness is documented in the video below.

In our fully recovered responsiveness test, we measured a recovery speed of 3.0 seconds, which is 2.05 seconds slower than the average of 0.95 seconds.

The Lucid’s memory foam has a very slow material responsiveness, which is typical of many types of more traditionally formulated memory foams.

That slow response time means it takes longer for the mattress to recover back to its original position after it has been compressed. This makes it more difficult to change positions, get in / out of bed, and also decreases sex performance.

At 3.0 seconds to fully recover back to its original shape, the Lucid is within the bottom 4% for the slowest responsiveness mattresses we’ve tested to date. There can be no sugarcoating this performance attribute. The Lucid mattress has a very slow material responsiveness and that slow speed will make it more difficult to move around on the mattress.

Bounce Test

The Lucid has a very low level of bounce. During our tests, we measured a total bounce height of 4.84″. This is 4.61″ less bounce than the average of 9.45″, based on all of our tests to date.

As with so many other performance areas on the Lucid, the traditionally formulated memory foam is having a huge impact on the level of bounce. Memory foam simply does not return much energy or bounce after being compressed.

This is ideal when it comes to reducing motion transfer, however, it also means the level of bounce is lower.

The level of bounce is also documented in the video below.

The lower level of bounce makes it more difficult to move around on the mattress, change sleeping positions, and has a huge negative impact on sex performance.

Furthermore, the all-foam design further decreases the level of bounce the mattress can achieve. At 4.61” of total bounce, the Lucid mattress is significantly below average.

To be comfortable on the mattress you’ll need to really desire a mattress with minimal bounce, understanding that the lack of bounce will impact ease of movement and sex.

7.1

Edge Support Test

The Lucid has good sitting edge support and mediocre lying edge support. In our sitting edge support test, we measured a sitting sinkage compression of 4.50″.

Max Sinkage

4.50″

Lying Support

Mediocre

This is 0.44″ more sitting sinkage than the average of 4.06″, based on all of our tests to date. While sitting directly on the edge of the mattress I did not feel tremendously well supported. While 4.50” of sitting sinkage is only modestly worse than average (and therefore earned a good score), given that the total height of the mattress is only 9.5”, it means the mattress support feels more collapsed and unsupportive.

The level of edge support while seated is documented in the images below.

Sitting, 140 lbs.

Lying edge support was a similar story. While lying directly on the edge of the mattress I did not feel well supported.

The level of edge support while lying is documented in the images below.

The Lucid struggles with the same basic material problem that many traditional memory foam mattresses struggle with. Memory foam by its nature wants to wrap and contour around the body.

That hugging sensation is great when you’re in the middle of the mattress. However, when the mattress tries to hug the body at the absolute edge there is simply an insufficient level of material along the edge side.

As a result, there is a weakening of support along the edge and the body does feel well supported. Overall, I’m disappointed, but unsurprised at the level of edge support performance. This is what I expect from a traditional memory foam mattress, especially at this price point.

6.4

Sex Test

The Lucid has mediocre sex performance. On the positive side, noise is minimal. Unfortunately, that’s where the good times end.

Both pressure relief and cooling performance were fair, which is to say decent, but still far from ideal. Likewise, edge support was measured at 4.50” of sitting sinkage compression. Again, this is serviceable, but far from what we hope for.

Sex FactorFactor WeightScoreRating
Bounce65%5.5Very Low
Edge Support20%8.1Good
Noise5%10Minimal
Pressure Relief5%7.0Fair
Cooling5%7.0Fair

In addition, heavier weighted bodies and certain dance without pants positions could leave you feeling more disappointed by the edge support.

All that said, where the Lucid struggles the most is also the factor that is the most critical for sex performance. The Lucid measured just 4.84” of total bounce height. This is considerably lower than the average bounce height of 9.45”, based on all of our tests to date.

Lucid Mattress Edge Sitting

When it comes to sex performance, more bounce is always better than less. Suffice to say, the Lucid has a very low level of bounce.

That low bounce means sex will be more strenuous, more difficult, and certain positions may simply be untenable for some couples. If sex is a priority then you will most likely want to consider a different mattress.

7.0

Pressure Relief Test

The Lucid has a fair level of pressure relief. During our tests, I felt moderate pressure points building on my body. The mattress is equipped with 3.5″ of comfort material. This is 0.58″ less comfort material than the average comfort layer thickness of 4.08″, based on all of our tests to date.

Comfort Layer

3.5″

Support Layer

6.0″

In terms of quantity, the Lucid has enough material to be comfortable. However, the quality of those materials simply isn’t great. The foam layers just didn’t feel tremendously comfortable on my body or in hand.

To be fair, the quality is exactly what we expect at this price point. They aren’t terrible foams necessarily, but compared to many mattresses at a higher price point, there is a clear performance, feel, quality, and pressure relief difference.

Lucid Mattress Materials
Lucid Mattress Materials

Ultimately, this is what I would describe as a cheap mattress. Is it perfect? Absolutely not. There are significant performance issues and pressure relief is absolutely among them.

Even so, when we consider the price point the level of pressure relief is what we would expect to find. When I consider our objective pressure mapping tests, material thickness, material quality, and my subjective experience on the mattress, I’m confident most sleepers will find the pressure relief to be fair.

How firm is Lucid?

The Lucid mattress is available in two firmness levels, plush or medium-firm. We tested to medium-firm version which we found to be a 6 out of 10 on our firmness scale.

We estimate the plush version to be around a 4 out of 10, with a soft feel.

Support & Sleeping Positions

Support on the Lucid is fair. During our tests, I felt that support was decent and yet, it’s clearly not at the same level as many other mattresses we’ve tested. The mattress is equipped with a 6.0″ support layer. This is 1.88″ thinner than the average support layer thickness of 7.88″, based on all of our tests to date.

Lucid Mattress Edge Support Side Sleeping With Vest
Lucid Mattress Edge Support Side Sleeping With Vest

With only 6.0” of support material the Lucid is notably below average in terms of support material thickness. In addition, this mattress is 9.5” thick (it’s designed to be 10”, but ours was notably short of that).

In general, thicker mattresses create better support and better pressure relief, as there is simply more material capable of supporting your body on top of the mattress.

With only 9.5” of total material profile, a 3.5” comfort layer, 6.0” support foam, and a foam quality that leaves much to be desired from top to bottom, we experienced a less-than-great level of support.

Lucid Mattress Memory Foam Perforations
Lucid Mattress Memory Foam Perforations

Certainly, many of the support problems are also pressure relief problems. For a mattress to be supportive you need to be able to lie in the same position comfortably, while also achieving a neutral spinal alignment.

The disappointing pressure relief experience meant that it was harder to lie in the same position while also maintaining comfort. As with so many other performance areas on the Lucid, the level of support is unsurprising.

Check out the table below to see the sleeper weights and sleeping positions that would be best suited for this mattress.

At the end of the day, this is a super budget-friendly mattress. There is only so much this mattress can realistically achieve at this price point.

While you can absolutely find mattresses with better performance for more money, at this price point, this is a very reasonable level of material quality and total performance with respect to support.

Based on all of my tests to date, an analysis of the materials, and my subjective experiences, I’m confident most sleepers will find support on the Lucid is fair.

According to the manufacturer, the medium version material construction is a 2.5″ gel memory foam atop a 7.5″ base foam. It’s possibly they are including the 1.0″ poly foam in the core as part of the base foam.

The plush version material design is slightly different, consisting of a 3.5″ gel memory foam, 2.0″ poly foam, and 4.5″ support foam.

Product Evolution

The Lucid mattress has been around since 2013, originally being offered in three firmness levels (Plush, Medium, and Firm). At some people between 2013 and present-day, the firm version was dropped, and the Lucid memory foam mattress became only available in Plush or Medium-Firm.

Over the years, Lucid has drastically simplified their mattress lineup from nearly a dozen options at a range of thickness and firmnesses to now only offering three mattresses—the Lucid memory foam (reviewed here), Lucid Latex Hybrid, and the Lucid Gel and Aloe Vera Hybrid.
