Best For

  • Organic, euro-cotton cover, provides excellent contour and pressure relief
  • Extremely fast response time
  • Very low levels of motion transfer, great for sensitive sleepers

Considerations

  • Low levels of bounce, not great for sex
  • 6.25″ of sinkage provides less edge support than I’d like to see
  • Some sleepers find memory foam sleepers warm

Our Verdict

The Loom & Leaf is a memory foam mattress with high contour and excellent pressure relief. The 12″ mattress includes an organic cotton cover and cooling gel foam.

This mattress has a low level of bounce and an extremely deep level of sinkage. It’s that classic memory foam feel with dramatic contour.

This mattress is available in two firmness levels—medium (5.5) and firm (8).

In our performance tests, the Loom & Leaf scored 8.81 overall. This score ranks the Loom & Leaf among the top 35% of all mattresses tested to date.

The price ($2,095) is certainly above average, nearly 2X the price of the average memory foam mattress ($1,076). Even so, it’s hard to overlook the fantastic performance.

Lastly, just about the highest endorsement I can ever give to a product is that Loom and Leaf is the mattress my wife and I sleep on each night. I’ve slept on it nightly since 2017. Memory foam isn’t for everyone, but if it works well for your needs / desires then Loom & Leaf is an amazingly good choice.

How is Loom & Leaf Different?

Compared to the average mattress, Loom & Leaf performs slightly above the average, although it is quite a bit costlier as well—94% more than the average memory foam mattress.

Advantages

The Loom & Leaf scored better than average for cooling, has lower levels of motion transfer, and exceptional pressure relief. If you’re looking for that true luxury memory foam feel, the Loom & Leaf hits the nail on the head.

Neutral Factors

This mattress has extremely deep sinkage, 43% more sinkage than average, and a more dramatic hug and contour (typical of classic memory foam). Bounce levels are also very low, only 48% of the average bounce level. Again, this is more typical of classic memory foam, but for isolated movement, it could be a big advantage.

Disadvantages

The biggest disadvantages for the Loom & Leaf include a slower material response time and worse sitting edge support (although lying edge support performed higher than average).

Cooling Test

The Loom & Leaf has excellent cooling performance. During our tests, I did not feel any significant level of heat retention around my body.

Baseline Temp.

79.1° F

Max. Temp.

87.6° F

Ending Temp.

80.8° F

Although memory foam oftentimes has the tendency to feel warm to some sleepers, that’s not the case with this mattress.

Loom & Leaf has a memory foam comfort layer, extremely deep sinkage, and the extra contour that comes with a Euro-style cover. But despite these factors which would usually hinder good cooling performance, the Loom & Leaf was still extremely comfortable.

  • Maximum Temperature (0 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after lying on it for 15 minutes
  • Ending Temperature (5 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after being lied upon and having no one on it for 5 minutes

The Loom & Leaf started with a temperature of 79.1° F. After lying on the mattress for 15 minutes the Loom & Leaf peaked at a temperature of 87.6° F. After 5 minutes with no one lying on the mattress it reduced the temperature back to 80.8° F.

Heat Dissipation Over Time

Loom & Leaf heat dissipation chart

As with any memory foam mattress, the Loom & Leaf is more susceptible to heating issues relative to hybrid, latex, and coil-based mattresses.

Overall, this mattress does a nice job as the Euro-style cover and gel foam top layer puts a certain level of material between the sleeper and the foams that are more likely to heat up (namely the memory foam core).

Loom and Leaf’s cooling score of 9.0 is above average compared to the average cooling score for memory foam mattresses (8.7).

In my experience over the years, I’ve never felt that Loom and Leaf was a hot mattress.

Heavier sleepers may find it warmer as they sink deeper and are more enveloped by the contouring firms.

Sinkage Test

The Loom & Leaf mattress has an extremely deep level of sinkage. In our tests, we measured a pressure point sinkage of 3.09″. This is 0.95″ deeper than the average sinkage level of 2.14″.

Loom & Leaf (2022) sinkage test
Loom & Leaf pressure point sinkage

The softer euro-style pillowtop and layers of memory / poly foam create deeper sinkage. This deeper sinkage with softer materials is also what allows the Loom and Leaf to create such profound pressure relief.

The Loom and Leaf contours around the body, relieving pressure as it hugs your unique shape.

10

Motion Transfer Test

The Loom & Leaf has extremely low levels of motion transfer.

During our tests, we measured a total acceleration range of 5.02 m/s². This is 43% less motion transfer than the average of 8.78 m/s^2, based on all of our tests to date.

The level of motion transfer is documented in the video below.

Our accelerometer test shows a similar level of motion transfer. This measurement reveals the intensity and motion waves as they travel across the mattress.

There is a rapid increase on the initial sink and bounce of the medicine ball, but it only takes a couple of subsequent rebounds to settle back into a minimal level of motion.

Loom & Leaf motion transfer graph

One of the big advantages to memory foam is energy and motion are both absorbed by the foams. This means you won’t often disturb your partner while sleeping.

7.1

Response Test

The Loom & Leaf has a very fast response time. During our tests, we measured 0.6 seconds for the mattress to mostly recover and 1.6 seconds for the mattress to fully recover.

Mostly Recovered

0.6 sec.

Complete Recovery

1.6 sec.

The level of responsiveness is documented in the video below.

Most of the materials bounce back quickly to their original form, but some of the more contouring foams take a little longer to fully rebound.

Loom & Leaf (2022) side sleeping
Loom & Leaf (2022) side sleeping

Compared to more traditional memory foam mattresses, I found the Loom and Leaf to be better. However, compared to latex and coil-based mattresses, in addition to many poly foams, the response is still going to be slower.

Bounce Test

In the case of Loom & Leaf, this mattress has very low levels of bounce. In our performance tests, the ball sank to a maximum depth of 5.89″ before rebounding upwards, giving the mattress a total bounce of 4.72″.

This is 4.82” less bounce than the average of 9.54”, based on all of our tests to date.

The level of bounce is documented in the video below.

While the mattress does provide a fast rebounding response, it was not enough to send the ball above the level height of the mattress.

The ball was 1.17″ below the level height of the mattress even after bouncing from a depth of 5.89″.

7.5

Edge Support Test

The Loom & Leaf has poor sitting edge support and excellent lying support.

Max. Sinkage

6.25″

Lying Support

Excellent

In our sitting edge support tests, we measured a sitting sinkage compression of 6.25”. This is 2.22” more sitting sinkage than the average of 4.03”, based on all of our tests to date.

The quality of edge support while seated is documented in the images below.

Loom & Leaf edge support – with vest

Our sitting edge support test had poor performance with a revealed maximum compression depth of 6.25″. Despite the less-than-idea sitting edge support, lying edge support was excellent.

As you can see from the photos, there is a reasonable level of edge support when sitting close to the edge of the mattress, but directly on the edge is not great. Given the level of firmness and the primarily memory foam design, the edges are fair, but not amazing.

Even so, I have never felt that I was going to be rolled out of the bed, as you can feel with some mattresses that have poor edge support.

The level of edge support while lying is documented in the images below.

While lying on the Loom & Leaf mattress I felt well-supported in all positions. The mattress has more than sufficient thickness to provide ample support, both in terms of comfort foam / materials and support foam.

Sex Test

The Loom & Leaf has mediocre sex performance. In our tests, we measured very low levels of bounce and poor edge support.

These two factors alone make up 80% of the sex score and really hurt the score. But the low score is not because it is a poor quality mattress.

Sex FactorFactor WeightScoreRating
Bounce65%5.4Very Low
Edge Support20%5.9Poor
Noise5%10Minimal
Pressure Relief5%10Outstanding
Cooling5%9.0Excellent

The best sex typically comes from a mattress with good bounce, excellent cooling, minimal noise, balanced sinkage, and good edge support.

Loom & Leaf (2022) back sleeping
Loom & Leaf (2022) back sleeping

Loom & Leaf is a memory foam mattress, that inherently means less bounce than coils. Memory foam would also generally be warmer, but the gel top layer of the Loom & Leaf really helps to keep things cool.

While it lacks the benefits of coils, like more bounce and better cooling, it has the benefit of virtually no noise.

10

Pressure Relief Test

The Loom & Leaf has outstanding pressure relief. During our tests, I did not feel any significant level of pressure points build up on my body.

Comfort Layer

4.5″

Support Layer

7.5″

This mattress has a 4.5” comfort layer and a 7.5″ support layer. Based on our testing experience, this is a more than thick enough comfort layer for great pressure relief.

Loom & Leaf (2022) sinkage
Loom & Leaf (2022) sinkage

This comfort layer is a bit thicker than most all-foam mattresses, which will result in better comfort and pressure relief for most sleepers and body types.

However, this is especially true for heavier-weight sleepers, who all but require a larger comfort layer thickness to maintain full pressure relief.

When I consider the total picture of objective foam specs, subjective experience, and material analysis, I’m confident in my view that pressure relief is outstanding.

10

Off-Gassing Test

Off-gassing on the Loom & Leaf is exceptional. This mattress had no odor upon arrival / setup and had an off-gassing period of 0 days. For reference, the average off-gassing period is 7 days, a week longer than off-gassing on the Loom & Leaf.

Unlike many online mattress companies, Loom and Leaf ships uncompressed with full-service delivery and setup. As a result, any off-gassing that may have occurred post-manufacturing is complete by the time the mattress arrives at your door.

Company

Loom & Leaf is owned by the parent-company, Saatva, which has been in the mattress business since 2010. Saatva offers a 365-night trial period, 25-year warranty, and free shipping.

If the mattress ends up not working out, returns cost $99, but that may not be a critical factor for all sleepers.

The Loom and Leaf Firm is better suited for back and stomach sleepers (especially if you are of a larger stature) or those who prefer less sinkage and a firmer feel.

Design

The Loom and Leaf mattress is a foam mattress with no springs or coils. It uses memory foam and a gel layer that provides a reasonable level of cooling with the contouring hug of memory foam.

Type

Memory Foam

Thickness

12″

Firmness

5.5 & 8

This mattress is available in two firmness levels, 5.5 out of 10 (medium feel) or 8 out of 10 (firm feel).

Regardless of which firmness you opt for, it is 12″ thick and also has an organic, quilted Euro-style pillowtop cotton cover. The look of the Loom & Leaf feels classic and has a timeless aesthetic.

Materials

The Loom and Leaf mattress is a memory foam mattress with special attention given to making sure this mattress sleeps cool, without sacrificing contour and hug.

At the top of the mattress, there is an organic cotton cover. Below the cover, there are four layers which include:

  • 2.0″ gel foam
  • 2.5″ memory foam
  • 2.0″ support foam (transitional)
  • 5.5″ support foam
Loom & Leaf mattress material layers

The Cover

The top of the Loom & Leaf is a quilted cover that is soft, breathable, and hypoallergenic. It uses a blend of white and tan accents with a soft texture that feels well-designed throughout.

Loom & Leaf (2022) corner

The cover is a Euro-style pillow top, meaning it has pressure-relieving comfort materials upholstered within the cover itself. This gives it a sleeker look (relative to traditional pillow tops) and improves long-term durability.

Unique stitching patterns continue along the side of the mattress with a classic wave design. The tan accents also wrap the sides to form functional handles for better grip when you have to move it.

The Comfort Layer

Right beneath the cover is a layer of 2.0″ gel foam. This layer is designed to keep you cool as well as provide spinal support and bounce.

Below the gel foam is a 2.0″ memory foam. Loom & Leaf opts for a 5 lbs., high-density memory foam that can provide pressure relief and comfort.

The use of memory foam also means it has more of that “sinking” feeling, which helps to hug and contour to your body as you sleep.

The Support Layer

The support layer is created by a 2.0″ transitional support layer followed by a 5.5″ support foam. Both of these foam layers work together to provide support and stability.

This base is pretty thick making the whole mattress feel robust and high quality.

Product Evolution

The Loom & Leaf mattress offers a classic memory foam feel and has undergone minimal changes between older versions of the mattress and the one manufactured today.

Besides minimal changes to the design of the cover, the overall thickness and material composition is the same as the first Loom & Leaf mattresses sold in 2015.
