  • Fast material response
  • Ludicrously inexpensive at only $199 for a Queen
  • Fast off-gassing period, just 3 days

Considerations

  • Only 8″ thick, which is notably thinner than the 12″ average
  • Low price, but also painfully low performance
  • Only 1″ comfort layer, which is 3.1″ thinner than the 4.1″ average

Our Verdict

The IKEA Vesteroy mattress is an 8″ coil mattress with a very thin 0.5″ poly foam comfort layer and 0.5″ quilted cover.

It has very minimal sinkage and moderate levels of bounce.

This mattress is offered in a single firmness, 6 out of 10 and with a medium-firm feel (this is the version we tested). But there is an older version of the Vesteroy as well (with a light blue cover) that has two additional firmnesses—firm (8) or extra firm (9). It’s unclear for how much longer this older version is going to be sold for.

In our performance tests, the IKEA Vesteroy has below average performance, with an overall score of only 7.03. Comapring over 245+ mattresses tested to date, this puts the IKEA Verseroy in the bottom 2% of all mattresses tested to date.

While the price is extremely low, only $199 for a queen mattress, the extremely low performance makes it impossible to recommend for any sleepers, especially full-grown adults.

How is IKEA Vesteroy Different?

The IKEA Vesteroy is a coil mattress with below-average performance and a below-average price point. It is a cheap mattress that tends to lack value for many sleepers by cutting corners and using lower quality materials, as well as fewer materials, to keep the price down.

Advantages

The IKEA Vesteroy mattress has a fast material response time and off-gasses faster than average, but these are pretty minor performance factors.

The price tag is incredibly low ($199 for a queen), but as the table above shows, it struggles in many other more significant performance areas.

Neutral Factors

This mattress has very minimal sinkage and moderate levels of bounce. Both of these factors are considered neutral since sleeper preference typically determines if this is good or bad.

Disadvantages

The disadvantages of the IKEA Vesteroy are numerous. It struggles with cooling and also has higher levels of motion transfer than the average. Edge support is lacking when sitting and basically non-existent when lying down.

This mattress is only 8″ thick (4″ thinner than average) and of that 8″ thickness, only 1″ is devoted to comfort materials. A comfort layer this thin can be catastrophic to pressure relief and lacks in support as well.

Cooling Test

The IKEA Vesteroy has a fair level of cooling performance. During our tests, I felt a moderate level of heat retention around my body. Ultimately, the mattress just doesn’t seem to breathe well and the foams seem to retain more heat.

Baseline Temp.

73.8° F

Max Temp.

92.0° F

Ending Temp.

79.8° F

The foam quality isn’t particularly impressive. The foams look and feel incredibly basic. More basic foams tend to retain more heat and are less breathable, and that’s exactly what we experienced and what we measured.

  • Maximum Temperature (0 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after lying on it for 15 minutes
  • Ending Temperature (5 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after being lied upon and having no one on it for 5 minutes

In our objective temperature tests, we measured a max surface level temperature of 92.0° F, which is 2.3° warmer than the average of 89.7°.

Heat Dissipation Over Time

Overall, I am just not impressed with the level of cooling performance. When we consider the complete picture of objective data, subjective experience, and material analysis, I’m confident in my view that cooling performance is fair at best.

Sinkage Test

The IKEA Vesteroy has a very minimal level of sinkage. During our tests, we measured a pressure point sinkage depth of 1.67”. This is 0.46” less sinkage than the average of 2.13”, based on all of our tests to date.

Sinkage Depth

1.67″

Sinkage Feel

Very Minimal

The level of sinkage is documented in the image below.

The mattress creates more of a floating feel where your body lies “on” the mattress instead of sinking down “in” the mattress. There is virtually no body contouring hug.

Ikea Vesteroy Sinkage Test
Ikea Vesteroy Sinkage Test

Instead, the mattress creates more of a generalized “depression” where your body is lying. But even with this generalized depression, the level of sinkage depth is still minimal.

8.1

Motion Transfer Test

The IKEA Vesteroy has a low level of motion transfer. During our tests, we measured a total acceleration range of 9.19 m/s². This is 6% more motion transfer than the average of 8.71 m/s².

Max. Acceleration

4.47 m/s²

Min. Acceleration

-4.72 m/s²

Accel. Range

9.19 m/s²

I was surprised at the fairly restrained level of motion transfer on the Vesteroy. Typically thin mattresses and mattresses with less foam struggle more with motion transfer.

Despite the Vesteroy having these attributes, it managed to keep motion held to a low level. In my view, the minimal level of sinkage and looser material assembly of components are the biggest factors in helping the Vesteroy create less motion.

The level of motion transfer is also documented in the video below.

In our motion transfer chart, which visualizes our accelerometer data, we can see the highest motion from 0 to 0.14 seconds. Motion drops thereafter, but remains spiky until 1.08 seconds when we return to near-zero levels of energy.

Ikea Vesteroy Motion Transfer Chart
Ikea Vesteroy Motion Transfer Chart

While I am pleased with the relatively restrained level of motion, the motion duration is quite long at over one second. Even so, given the incredibly budget-friendly price point, it’s hard to complain too much. This is a very reasonable level of motion for a mattress that’s so inexpensive.

10

Response Test

The IKEA Vesteroy has an extremely fast material responsiveness. During our mostly recovered test, the mattress recovered back to shape within 0.2 seconds. This is 0.21 seconds faster than the average of 0.41 seconds.

Mostly Recovered

0.2 sec.

Complete Recovery

0.3 sec.

The level of responsiveness is documented in the video below.

During our fully recovered test, the mattress recovered back to shape within 0.3 seconds. This is 0.60 seconds faster than the average of 0.90 seconds. This is effectively an instant material responsiveness.

The mattress immediately rebounds back to shape. Given that the mattress is mostly made of steel coils, that makes perfect sense. The rapid response ensures you’ll never feel stuck on the mattress and it’s easy to move around on.

Bounce Test

The IKEA Vesteroy has a moderate level of bounce. During our tests, we measured a total bounce height of 9.18”. This is 0.50” less bounce than the average of 9.68”.

The level of bounce is also documented in the video below.

Ideally, I want to see 8-12” of bounce and the Vesteroy is within that sweet spot. At this range, it’s enough to help improve sex performance and ease of movement, without creating significant issues for motion transfer.

Overall, I’m pleased with the bounce level and I don’t expect it will be an issue for most sleepers.

6.6

Edge Support Test

The IKEA Vesteroy is a mixed bag for edge support. In our sitting edge support test, we measured a sitting sinkage compression of 3.75”. This is 0.29” less than the average of 4.04”.

Max Sinkage

3.75″

Lying Support

Terrible

The thin 8.0” total height of the mattress is greatly limiting the total sinkage level. Even so, the mattress doesn’t feel tremendously supportive and there is the feeling of material collapse while sitting on the edge of the mattress.

Given that I only weigh 140 pounds that is especially concerning, as heavier-weighted sleepers will put even more pressure on the edge.

The level of edge support while seated is documented in the images below.

Sitting, 140 lbs.

Sitting, 200 lbs.

Lying edge support was poor. While lying directly on the edge of the mattress I do not feel well supported in any sleeping position. As with sitting, while lying I feel a collapse of materials and an insufficient level of support.

The level of edge support while lying is documented in the images below.

The Vesteroy uses no perimeter edge support foam or reinforced edge coils. In addition, the thin 8” design and relatively low-quality materials are both contributing to the weak edge support.

8.1

Sex Test

The IKEA Vesteroy has a good level of sex performance, but also one that is far from great. Our sex score looks at 5 different weighted factors to determine performance. Scores across these factors were all over the board.

Sex FactorFactor WeightScoreRating
Bounce65%8.2High
Edge Support20%9.1Excellent
Noise5%8.0Moderate
Pressure Relief5%4.0Terrible
Cooling5%7.0Fair

Edge support earned a good score based on our purely objective metrics. Even so, I don’t have a great deal of confidence based on my subjective experiences. Bounce was about average, which earned it a good score.

And last for the good scores we have just a moderate level of noise created by the mattress.

All that said, cooling only earned a fair score and pressure relief was terrible. This combination of factors results in a level of amorous activity performance that is adequate, but only just.

4.0

Pressure Relief Test

The IKEA Vesteroy has a terrible level of pressure relief. During our tests, I felt significant pressure points on my body. This is an incredibly basic mattress.

Comfort Layer

1.0″

Support Layer

7.0″

We have just 1.0” of comfort material that sits atop a 7.0” coil layer. Unsurprisingly, when you’re lying on mostly steel coils it’s not a great feeling.

The Vesteroy has significantly less comfort material than the average mattress, which has 4.1” of comfort material, based on all of our tests to date.

With just 1.0” of comfort material, there just isn’t enough material between sleepers and the support layer to adequately comfort the body.

While this mattress may be an acceptable choice for children, for most adult sleepers it just isn’t going to provide a sufficient level of pressure relief.

In our pressure maps we can see how dramatic the impact is when sleeping on your side. There are significant pressure points in the hip and shoulders. In addition, the Vesteroy hit 2.03 PSI, which is considered a high pressure point and is the max level that our pressure mat measures.

All factors consider, the Vesteroy’s pressure relief is simply insufficient.

Off-Gassing Test

Off-gassing is strong right out of the box, but the odor only lasted for 3 days.

Initial Smell Strength

Strong

Off-Gassing Period

3 days

Comparing all mattresses tested to date, the average off-gassing duration is 7 days so the IKEA Vesteroy does off-gas quicker than average.

The lack of comfort foams and thinner materials overall are likely a contributing factor here.

I will also add that the mattress doesn’t have a typical polyurethane foam mattress smell. Instead, it smells a bit like Berber carpet, which is highly unusual.

Company

IKEA mattresses have a 180-night trial period and a 10-year warranty. Shipping costs $19 for this mattress and returns are free.

That said, returns are issued as a store credit and not an actual refund back in your bank account.

In my view, this is a terrible refund policy. If I make a purchase I’m unhappy with I should be able to return the mattress for a full cash refund.

A large percentage of mattress brands allow you to do exactly that with a much smaller percentage charging fees, only allowing store credit returns, or not allowing returns at all.

Being stuck with store credit just doesn’t feel great, especially on a product that is hundreds of dollars.

How firm is the IKEA Vesteroy?

The IKEA Vesteroy is available in three firmnesses—medium-firm, firm, and extra firm. We tested the medium-firm version which has a 6 out of 10 firmness.

Firmness Chart 6

From the looks of it, this mattress used to be available in a firmer version with a light blue cover and in two firmnesses—firm and extra firm. It was later redesigned to have an all-white cover and a softer feel—medium-firm (6). The older version is still available for now, but it’s unclear how long that will be the case.

My guess is that older version may be discontinued once the stock is gone.

Based on materials and mattress design, I would estimate the firmer version of the IKEA Vesteroy to be closer to a firm (8) and an extra firm (9).

Support & Sleeping Positions

The IKEA Vesteroy has a terrible level of support. During our tests, I did not feel well supported in any sleeping position.

The mattress is equipped with a 7.0” coil unit. This is slightly thinner than the average support layer, which is 7.9”, based on all of our tests to date.

However, while the coil unit is fairly tall at 7.0”, the quality and level of support it provides is entirely insufficient, in my view.

The materials are incredibly basic and do not look or feel high quality. To the contrary, the mattress feels cheap. And to be fair, it is cheap.

So this level of support performance is exactly what we’d expect at this price point. Support issues are compounded by a complete lack of pressure relief. While the mattress may be capable of supporting children, it is not a mattress I would ever recommend to any adult sleepers.

Check out the table below to see the sleeper weights and sleeping positions that would be best suited for this mattress.

Design

The IKEA Vesteroy is a coil mattress with a thin 8″ total height that is available in three firmness—medium-firm (6), firm (8), or extra firm (9). It is thinner than the average mattress we’ve tested but is also offered at an extremely low price.

The Cover

The IKEA Vesteroy has an all-white quilted cover that is 0.5″ thick. It lacks any plush feel and has very minimal sinkage.

Ikea Vesteroy Close Corner
Ikea Vesteroy Close Corner

Overall, this cover just doesn’t impress and feels cheap.

The Comfort Layer

Being a coil mattress, the comfort layer of the Vesteroy is very thin. It is a simple 0.5″ poly foam layer (green) that primarily serves as a separation between the thin cover and the support coils.

Ikea Vesteroy Measuring Poly Foam
Ikea Vesteroy Measuring Poly Foam

A thinner foam top layer doesn’t have to mean poor performance, but in the case of this mattress, there are no other transitional support materials so it’s a bit of a rough transition and support (as well as pressure relief) struggles because of it.

The Support Layer

The support layer is a 7.0″ layer of encased pocketed coils. These coils are individually wrapped in a thin fabric that allows the coils to move independently from each other.

Product Evolution

The IKEA Vesteroy was originally launched in 2022 with a light blue outer cover and was available in two firmnesses—firm (8) or extra firm (9).

In 2024, the IKEA Vesteroy was reintroduced with an all-white outer cover and a softer medium-firm feel, 6 out of 10. This is the version we tested in this review.

For now, the firm and extra firm Vesteroy is still available. However, it’s unclear how long that will be the case. My guess is that the firm and extra firm Vesteroy will be discontinued once IKEA sells their remaining stocks.

Other Mattresses to Consider

Not sure if the IKEA Vesteroy is the right pick for you? Check out these three other top-rated budget hybrid mattresses for under $800 you may want to consider.

A hybrid mattress has a thicker foam comfort layer, but retains the pocketed coil support layer that we see on the IKEA Vesteroy. For a good value without sacrificing performance, hybrid can be a fantastic option compared to traditional coil mattresses.
