Best For
- Low budget hybrid, just $600 for a queen mattress
- Relatively fast off-gassing
- Thin profile, under 10″ thick
Considerations
- Scores at or below average in 7 out of 8 performance tests
- Ranks among the bottom 3% of all mattresses tested to date
- Below-average pressure relief and thinner comfort layer
Our Verdict
The IKEA Anneland is a 9.50″ hybrid mattress made of poly foam, memory foam, and a support layer of pocketed coils and support foam.
The IKEA Anneland is available in three firmness levels — medium, medium-firm, and slightly firm. We tested the medium-firm version.
This mattress has moderate sinkage and moderate levels of bounce. This gives the mattress a balanced feel and a slight degree of contour. It has a thin comfort layer, which doesn’t do the mattress any favors for pressure relief.
In our performance tests, this mattress earned an overall score of 7.04, ranking the mattress in the bottom 3% of all mattresses tested to date.
That said, it’s designed as a low-budget hybrid and has made sacrifices in performance to target an ultra-low price. The IKEA Anneland is $599 for a queen-sized mattress, which is 61% less expensive than the average hybrid, a savings of over $900 for a queen-sized mattress.
If you’re tight on cash or just need something for a temporary fix, the Anneland could work, but it’s certainly not my first pick for anybody.

How is IKEA Anneland Different?
The IKEA Anneland is a 9.50″ hybrid mattress with an overall performance level that is significantly lower than average, but a price that is also less than average. If you’re on a very tight budget or are just looking for a temporary mattress, the Anneland may work for you.
Advantages
The biggest advantage of the IKEA Anneland is the low price.
Other, more minor, advantages include slightly better-than-average sex performance and fast off-gassing (likely due to its thinner profile) and less dense materials.
Neutral Factors
Neutral factors include moderate levels of sinkage and moderate levels of bounce. These are considered neutral factors because different sleepers may have different preferences and opinions on whether the feel is “good” or “bad”.

Disadvantages
Disadvantages of the IKEA are numerous, as you really give up a lot of performance factors to hit this low of a price. The following categories score below average: cooling, motion transfer, response time, edge support, pressure relief, and company.
Cooling Test
The IKEA Anneland has fair cooling. During our tests, I felt a moderate level of heat retention around my body.
Baseline Temp.
71.9° F
Max. Temp.
92.1° F
Ending Temp.
80.3° F
The hybrid design is helping cooling performance, as more airflow helps reduce heat retention. However, there are no other significant cooling features.
There is no phase change material, no cooling cover, no thermoreactive fibers, no air, and no gel. This mattress is equipped with fairly basic poly and memory foams, neither of which appears to breathe especially well.
Max. Temp.

Ending Temp.

- Baseline Temperature – the temperature of the mattress before anyone lies on it
- Maximum Temperature (0 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after lying on it for 15 minutes
- Ending Temperature (5 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after being lied upon and having no one on it for 5 minutes
In our objective temperature tests, we measured a max surface level temperature of 92.1° F. This is 2.1° more than the average of 90.0° F, based on all of our tests to date.
After getting off the mattress, the temperature declined by 7.5 degrees from minutes 0 to 1, which is 2.7 degrees cooler than the average 0 to 1 minute decline of 4.8 degrees.
Heat Dissipation Over Time

When we consider the combination of objective data, my subjective experiences, and an analysis of the materials, I’m confident in my view that cooling is fair.
Sinkage Test
The IKEA Anneland has moderate sinkage. During our tests, we measured a pressure point sinkage depth of 2.29″. This is 0.07″ more sinkage than the average sinkage depth of 2.22″, based on all of our tests to date.
Sinkage Depth
2.29″
Sinkage Feel
Moderate
Body Contour
Slight
The level of sinkage is documented in the image below.

The mattress creates a slight body contouring hug and also creates more of a floating feel where the body lies more “on” the mattress as opposed to sinking down “in” the mattress.
While the mattress uses a reasonably thick comfort layer, the foam quality is below average, in my view. None of these foam layers feel good on the body or in hand. When I run my hand around the foam layers, there is a notable “crunchiness” to them.
In my view, these foams already feel dried out and crusty, which is normally something you’d see on foams that are many years old. Overall, I am just not impressed with the comfort dynamic on the Anneland. It has much to be desired, in my view.
Motion Transfer Test
The IKEA Anneland has a low level of motion transfer. During our tests, we measured a total acceleration range of 9.40 m/s². This is 7% more motion transfer than the average of 8.79 m/s².
Accel. Range
9.40 m/s²
Motion Duration
0.90 seconds
While the comfort layer is reasonably thick, it’s mostly poly foam, foams that are highly responsive, springy, and bouncy (excluding the 0.75” memory foam layer), and foams that feel more “crunchy”.
All of these attributes are working together to increase motion transfer. The level of motion transfer is also documented in the video below.
In our motion transfer chart, which visualizes our accelerometer data, we can see the highest motion peaks from 0 to 0.2 seconds.
Motion declines thereafter, before seeing a notable secondary energy spike from 0.5 to 0.7 seconds. By 0.90 seconds, we’ve returned to near-zero levels of energy, which is 0.02 seconds longer than the average motion duration of 0.88 seconds.
Motion Transfer Over Time

Both motion intensity and motion duration are worse than average, albeit only slightly. Overall motion transfer is good and yet far from great.
Response Test
The IKEA Anneland has a slow material response. In our mostly recovered test, we measured a recovery speed of 0.8 seconds, which is 0.39 seconds slower than the average of 0.41 seconds, based on all of our tests to date.
Mostly Recovered
0.8 sec.
Fully Recovered
1.6 sec.
In our fully recovered responsiveness test, we measured a recovery speed of 1.6 seconds, which is 0.59 seconds slower than the average of 1.01 seconds. This mattress is a tale of two foam types.
We have the highly responsive poly foam layers that are rebounding back to shape quickly. However, we also have a layer of memory foam, which is slower to recover to its original shape.
The level of responsiveness is documented in the video below.
This memory foam layer is slowing down the total material responsiveness of the mattress. This slower-than-average response can make it harder to change positions and move around on the mattress for some sleepers.
Bounce Test
The IKEA Anneland has a moderate level of bounce. During our tests, we measured a total bounce height of 9.42″.
Max. Depth
4.84″
Max. Rebound
4.58″
Total Bounce
9.42″
This is 0.61″ more bounce than the average of 8.81″, based on all of our tests to date.
Max. Sinkage Depth

Max. Bounce Height

The level of bounce is also documented in the video below.
Hybrid mattresses typically create more bounce than average and that’s exactly what we measured here as well. The combination of coil unit plus highly responsive poly foams is able to deliver more bounce.
More bounce helps facilitate ease of movement and improves sex performance. However, higher bounce also has a negative impact on motion transfer.
Edge Support Test
The IKEA Anneland has good sitting edge support and fair lying edge support.
Max. Sinkage
4.25″
Lying Support
Fair
Reinforced Edge
Yes
In our sitting edge support test, we measured a sitting sinkage compression of 4.25″. This is 0.30″ more sitting sinkage than the average of 3.95″, based on all of our tests to date.
The level of edge support while seated is documented in the images below.
Sitting, 140 lbs.

Sitting, 200 lbs.

While lying directly on the edge of the mattress, I felt that the support was fair in all sleeping positions. IKEA’s product page says that the mattress is equipped with “Firmer springs around the [perimeter of] the mattress…”.
After cutting open the mattress, I could find no physical or visual indication that the mattress uses firmer springs along the perimeter. However, it’s possible that my inspection of the materials is simply wrong.
The level of edge support while lying is documented in the images below.
Lying on Edge, 140 lbs.

Lying on Edge, 200 lbs.

While the firmer edge coil isn’t clear, what is clear is that the mattress uses a layer of support foam that wraps the entire perimeter of the mattress.
This support foam is certainly helping to create a more supportive edge for both sitting and lying. Even so, there is a lot of sinkage and loss of support while lying directly on the edge of the mattress.
While the perimeter foam support is helping, it doesn’t seem to be enough to overcome the thinner-than-average total profile height and the thinner-than-average support layer.
Sex Test
The IKEA Anneland has good sex performance. On the positive side, the mattress is fairly quiet. In addition, both edge support and bounce are good, even if they don’t rise to the excellent or outstanding level.

We measured 9.24” of total bounce height, which is more than average and a major factor helping amorous activities.
| Sex Factor | Factor Weight | Score | Rating |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bounce | 65% | 8.4 | High |
| Edge Support | 20% | 8.4 | Good |
| Noise | 5% | 10 | Minimal |
| Pressure Relief | 5% | 6.0 | Mediocre |
| Cooling | 5% | 7.0 | Fair |
That said, on the negative side of things, we have pressure relief and cooling, both of which earned worse scores than average. In my view, this mattress just isn’t especially comfortable and doesn’t breathe especially well. Both of these are detractors for sex performance.
Pressure Relief Test
The IKEA Anneland has a mediocre level of pressure relief. During our tests, I felt notable pressure points on my body. The mattress is equipped with 4.5″ of comfort material, which is 0.22″ more comfort material than the average comfort layer thickness of 4.28″, based on all of our tests to date.
Comfort Layer
4.50″
Support Layer
5.00″
While it’s great to see a thicker-than-average comfort layer, the quality and feel of these foam layers leave much to be desired.
The foams have a notable “crunchiness” to them when I run my hands across their surface. In addition, they create more of a floating feel and don’t have much body hug.

In my view, these foam layers simply are not comfortable and are the primary reason that pressure relief isn’t great.
In our objective pressure mapping tests, we measured a max PSI of 1.20. Ideally, I want to see all PSI measurements at 1.0 or less. IKEA’s Anneland missed that mark by a healthy margin.
Pressure Map – Side Sleepers

| Pressure Relief (PSI) | Average | Maximum |
|---|---|---|
| Side Sleepers | 0.14 | 0.70 |
Pressure Map – Back Sleepers

| Pressure Relief (PSI) | Average | Maximum |
|---|---|---|
| Back Sleepers | 0.10 | 1.20 |
Pressure Map – Stomach Sleepers

| Pressure Relief (PSI) | Average | Maximum |
|---|---|---|
| Stomach Sleepers | 0.10 | 0.68 |
In our pressure mapping tests, we can see head, hips, and shoulders lighting up as higher pressure areas.
When I consider our objective pressure mapping tests, material thickness, material quality, and my subjective experience on the mattress, I’m confident most sleepers will find the pressure relief to be mediocre.
Off-Gassing Test
The IKEA Anneland had a strong smell upon the initial unpacking. The mattress arrived compressed in plastic, but with no outer box for shipping.
Initial Smell Strength
Strong
Off-Gassing Period
3 days
The mattress smelled for 3 days. This is 4.0 days shorter than the average smell duration of 7.0 days.

Company
IKEA mattresses come with a 180-night trial period and a 10-year warranty. Shipping is $19, but there’s a lot of gray area (see below).
As the “cherry on top” of the bad company score, there are very limited returns in that you can return it, but only for store credit. This is a huge red negative, in my view.
| Company Factor | Factor Weight | Score | Data |
|---|---|---|---|
| Returns | 40% | 0 | No / Very limited returns |
| Trial Period | 30% | 10 | 180 nights |
| Warranty | 20% | 8.0 | 10 years |
| Shipping | 10% | 9.0 | $19 |
| Country of Origin | 0% | Mexico |
Comparing 102+ brands tested to date, the average trial period is 173 nights, 7 nights less than IKEA offers. The average warranty is 13 years, which is 3 years more than the IKEA mattress.
Additionally, that’s excluding the 42% of mattresses that offer lifetime warranties.

Circling back to shipping terms, IKEA offers many different shipping options that include: store pickup, pick up at a location nearby, standard delivery, scheduled doorstop delivery, and scheduled in-home delivery. These were the options available to us in Scottsdale, Arizona. Standard delivery was only $19, perhaps due to our proximity to the nearest IKEA warehouse.
However, we noticed that the options change when entering other zip codes. For 83119 in Wyoming, the closest and only option was store pick up in Salt Lake City, Utah. For 71497 Louisiana, there were similar options to Scottsdale, but the prices were much higher.
So unlike most online mattress retailers, shipping to your door is not guaranteed and pricing can vary depending on the option you choose and local shipping rates.
How firm is IKEA Anneland?
The IKEA Anneland is available in three firmness levels.
Medium-firm Version
We tested the medium-firm, which I found to be around a 6 out of 10.

Plush Version
Based on the materials and overall design, I would estimate the plush version to have a firmness of 5 out of 10, with a medium feel.

Firm Version
The Anneland is also available in a firm version, which I would estimate to be around a 7 out of 10, with a slightly firm feel.

Support & Sleeping Positions
Support on the IKEA Anneland is mediocre. During our tests, I felt reasonably well supported, but I also felt notable pressure points, which negatively impacted support.
The mattress is equipped with a 5.0″ support layer. This is 2.91″ thinner than the average support layer thickness of 7.91″, based on all of our tests to date.
| Support Factor | Data |
|---|---|
| Comfort Layer | 4.50″ |
| Support Layer | 5.00″ |
| Firmness | Medium, Medium-Firm, and Slightly Firm |
| Body Contour | Slight |
| Zoned Support | Yes |
| Reinforced Edge | Yes |
For a mattress to create ideal support, it needs to both support the body, keeping the spine in a neutral alignment, while also creating sufficient comfort and pressure relief.
In my view, this mattress is simply not especially comfortable to lie on for extended periods of time. It creates noted pressure points, especially in my back, hips, and shoulders. The foam quality and foam formulations simply limits pressure relief and creates a feel that is far from ideal comfort.
In addition, this mattress is notably thinner than average. Thinner mattresses simply have less material with which to comfort and support the body.
The thinness of this mattress is certainly having a negative impact on the total support experience. The body can more easily sink through the comfort layer and engage with a very thin 3.75” coil unit (6-8” coil unit is a more typical height).

Check out the table below to see the sleeper weights and sleeping positions that would be best suited for this mattress.
Plush Version
| Sleeper Weight | Stomach Sleeper | Side Sleeper | Back Sleeper |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under 150 lbs. | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| 150-250 lbs. | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| 250-300 lbs. | Maybe | Maybe | Maybe |
Medium-Firm Version
| Sleeper Weight | Stomach Sleeper | Side Sleeper | Back Sleeper |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under 150 lbs. | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| 150-250 lbs. | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| 250-300 lbs. | Maybe | Maybe | Maybe |
Firm Version
| Sleeper Weight | Stomach Sleeper | Side Sleeper | Back Sleeper |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under 150 lbs. | Yes | Maybe | Yes |
| 150-250 lbs. | Yes | Maybe | Yes |
| 250-300 lbs. | Maybe | Maybe | Maybe |
If there is a silver lining, it’s the multiple firmness options, which can be helpful if you know you prefer a firmer or softer feel.
Even so, it’s not enough to solve the underlying support and pressure relief issues that are inherent to a mattress at this height and with this level of foam quality.
Based on all of my tests to date, an analysis of the materials, and my subjective experiences, I’m confident most sleepers will find support on the IKEA Anneland is mediocre.
Design
The IKEA Anneland is a 9.50″ hybrid mattress that comes in three firmness options—Medium, Medium-Firm, and Slightly Firm. It is designed to be a budget-friendly hybrid, but it cuts a lot of corners in performance in order to get there.
| Design Factor | Data |
|---|---|
| Type | Hybrid |
| Thickness | 9.50″ |
| Cover Type | Thin |
| Weight | 92 lbs. |
| Has Handles | Yes |
| Fiberglass-Free | Yes |
| Ships in a Box | Yes |
The Anneland is a 9.5″ hybrid, thinner than average, with a thin cover. It weighs only 92 lbs. There are very small carrying handles and the mattress is fiberglass-free.

The Cover
The IKEA Anneland has a thin cover. It is removable and machine washable. It has a high degree of stretch and is soft to the touch.

The Comfort Layer
The comfort layer is 4.50″ thick and made of two layers of poly foam with a memory foam sandwiched in between.

The top poly foam is 1.25″ thick and the second layer of foam is a 0.75″ memory foam. The bottom foam within the comfort layer is a channel-cut 2.0″ poly foam.
The top two layers are primarily for comfort and the 2.0″ poly foam serves as a transitional support layer.
The Support Layer
The support layer is 5.00″ thick and made of 3.75″ pocketed coils and a 1.25″ support foam base.

A support layer that is only 5.0″ thick is significantly thinner than average. Furthermore, the average coil is around 8.0″ high. A pocketed coil unit that is only 3.75″ tall is significantly shorter than average.
Product Evolution
The Anneland mattress was added to the IKEA online lineup in 2024 as a low-cost hybrid with a thin profile (under 10″ thick).
It is possible that this mattress has been sold in-store for longer, but the exact history is a little unclear.
