Best For

  • Low budgets—under $500 for a queen mattress
  • Low levels of motion transfer, 27% less than average
  • Good edge support when sitting directly on the edge

Considerations

  • Cooling performance is far from great and there are significant heat retention issues
  • Slow material response time
  • Very low bounce can be a hindrance to sex performance

Our Verdict

The EGOHome EGO Black is a 14″ memory foam mattress with a thin cover, memory foam and poly foam comfort layer, and support foam base.

It is available in a couple different firmnesses. This version is coined the “Foam Medium” label and has a medium-firm feel, 6 out of 10 on our firmness scale. We’ve also tested the “Foam Firm”, which had a slightly firm feel, 7 out of 10 on the firmness scale. If you’re looking for a firmer feel, you can read our full review of the EGOHome Black Firm here.

The Ego Black has moderate sinkage and very low levels of bounce. It really is that classic memory foam feel, as it also struggles with slow material response and heat retention.

In our performance tests, this mattress earned an overall score of 7.58. This score ranks among the bottom 9% of all mattresses tested to date. That said, the selling point of this mattress isn’t really the performance as much as it is the price.

A queen EGO Black mattress costs only $499, a hard price point for many mattresses to hit. This is 64% less expensive than the average mattress we’ve tested. Even if we look exclusively at memory foam, the EGO Black is 56% less than average, saving you $629 on average.

For sleepers on a budget, this can be a perfectly acceptable choice, just make sure you understand the disadvantages before getting in bed with the Ego Black.

How is EGOHome EGO Black Different?

The EGOHome Ego Black has an overall performance that is below average and a price that is also below average. The result is a cheap mattress with sub-par performance, but this can be an attractive balance for sleepers on a budget.

Advantages

Besides the low price, other advantages of the EGO Black include lower levels of motion transfer and good edge support when sitting directly on the edge of the mattress.

You’ll save $630 (compared to the average memory foam mattress) when you opt for the Ego Black. But bear in mind, these savings do come at a performance cost.

Neutral Factors

This mattress has moderate levels of sinkage and very low levels of bounce. Being a memory foam mattress, the EGO Black absorbs motion and has a more restrained feel.

Disadvantages

To achieve the low price tag, there are numerous disadvantages that you’ll have to be okay with. This mattress has mediocre cooling with a significant level of heat retention. Material response time is also quite a bit slower than average.

Egohome Ego Black Relaxing
Egohome Ego Black Relaxing

For couples, the Ego Black may not be the best choice as the sex score is less than impressive. The very low bounce really kills the energy needed for active intimacy.

Lastly, off-gassing is quite slow on the Ego Black. After unboxing, this mattress took 20 days to fully off-gas, nearly 3 full weeks. If you’re sensitive to strong odors, this could be an issue.

6.0

Cooling Test

The EGOHome Ego Black has mediocre cooling. During our tests, I felt a significant level of heat retention and warmness around my body.

Baseline Temp.

76.1° F

Max Temp.

94.5° F

Ending Temp.

81.5° F

The areas of greatest heat retention I would describe as having a “hot” feeling. When we look at the material design for this mattress it’s not surprising that it struggled with heat.

We have an all-foam design with 2.0” of memory foam on top. In addition, the quality of the foam layers, while fine, are also far from amazing. This type of poly and memory foam just doesn’t breathe as well as higher-end foams are going to, resulting in more heat retention.

Max Temp.

Ending Temp

Egohome Ego Black After Cooling Test

  • Baseline Temperature – the temperature of the mattress before anyone lies on it
  • Maximum Temperature (0 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after lying on it for 15 minutes
  • Ending Temperature (5 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after being lied upon and having no one on it for 5 minutes

According to EGOHome, the mattress cover is “…infused with graphene to help regulate heat, resist bacteria, and keep odors at bay, while specially made to have an instant cool-to-the-touch feel.”

Based on my experiences, I did not feel any cool-to-the-touch feel on the cover. It felt like a pretty standard, thin, budget-friendly cover that I’ve seen on other similarly priced mattresses.

In our objective temperature tests, we measured a max surface level temperature of 94.5° F. This is 4.7° more than the average of 89.8° F, based on all of our tests to date.

Heat Dissipation Over Time

When we consider the combination of objective data, my subjective experiences, and an analysis of the materials, I’m confident in my view that cooling is mediocre.

Sinkage Test

The EGOHome Ego Black has moderate sinkage. During our tests, we measured a pressure point sinkage depth of 2.24″. This is 0.08″ more sinkage than the average sinkage depth of 2.16″, based on all of our tests to date.

Sinkage Depth

2.24″

Sinkage Feel

Moderate

The mattress creates a dramatic body contouring hug and has the classic memory foam feel. There is lots of hug, lots of contour, and a slower material responsiveness.

The level of sinkage is documented in the image below.

Egohome Ego Black Sinkage Test
Egohome Ego Black Sinkage Test

This is neither good nor bad, but it is a more specific feel. To be comfortable on the Ego Black you’ll need to like the feel of more traditional memory foam.

9.4

Motion Transfer Test

The EGOHome Ego Black has a very low level of motion transfer. During our tests, we measured a total acceleration range of 6.32 m/s². This is 28% less motion transfer than the average of 8.74 m/s².

Max. Acceleration

3.21 m/s²

Min. Acceleration

-3.11 m/s²

Accel. Range

6.32 m/s²

The Ego Black has many material and design factors going for it to help reduce motion transfer. The all-foam design, 2.0” memory foam layer on top, thin non-quilted cover, and lower bounce are helping to reduce motion transfer.

The level of motion transfer is also documented in the video below.

In our motion transfer chart, which visualizes our accelerometer data, we can see the highest motion peaks from 0 to 0.15 seconds. Motion drops off immediately thereafter and by 0.87 seconds we return to near-zero levels of energy.

Egohome Ego Black Motion Transfer Chart
Egohome Ego Black Motion Transfer Chart

While I was pleased with the motion intensity, the level of motion duration was a bit lower than I expected. Typically, all foam mattresses are able to disperse all energy within 0.5 seconds.

In any case, it’s hard to complain too much here. At just 6.32 m/s² of acceleration range the Ego Black’s motion intensity is well below average and as a result motion transfer shouldn’t be an issue for most sleepers.

7.1

Response Test

The EGOHome Ego Black is a mixed bag for material responsiveness, with a moderate mostly recovered response time and a slow fully recovered response time.

Mostly Recovered

0.6 sec.

Complete Recovery

1.6 sec.

In our mostly recovered test, we measured a recovery speed of 0.6 seconds, which is 0.17 seconds slower than the average of 0.43 seconds, based on all of our tests to date.

In our fully recovered responsiveness test, we measured a recovery speed of 1.6 seconds, which is 0.62 seconds slower than the average of 0.98 seconds.

The level of responsiveness is documented in the video below.

Ego Black’s 2.0” of memory foam is driving the majority of the slow material responsiveness. Said memory foam has a more traditional feel. That more traditional feel means more hug, less bounce, and more body contour.

But it also means slower responsiveness. That slower material response will make it more difficult to move around on the mattress, change positions, and get out of bed.

Bounce Test

The EGOHome Ego Black has a very low level of bounce. During our tests, we measured a total bounce height of 5.11″. This is 4.15″ less bounce than the average of 9.26″, based on all of our tests to date.

Max. Depth

Max Bounce Height

Egohome Ego Black Bounce Rebound

The 2.0” traditional memory foam layer on top and the all-foam design greatly reduce bounce. That lower bounce is a significant reason that motion transfer is lower.

However, lower bounce also makes it more difficult to move around on the mattress and has a significant negative impact on sex performance. Ideally, I want to see 8-12” of total bounce.

The level of bounce is also documented in the video below.

At just 5.11” of bounce height the Ego Black is well below average and that lower level of bounce includes notable impacts to ease of movement and sex.

9.0

Edge Support Test

The EGOHome Ego Black has outstanding sitting edge support and good lying edge support.

Max Sinkage

3.00″

Lying Support

Good

In our sitting edge support test, we measured a sitting sinkage compression of 3.00″. This is 1.04″ less sitting sinkage than the average of 4.04″, based on all of our tests to date. The mattress does a nice job of creating sufficient support even when sitting directly on the edge of the mattress.

The level of edge support while seated is documented in the images below.

Sitting, 140 lbs.

Egohome Ego Black Edge Support Test

Sitting, 200 lbs.

Lying edge support was good, but doesn’t rise to the same level of sitting edge support. While lying directly on the edge of the mattress, I felt that the support was good in all sleeping positions.

The level of edge support while lying is documented in the images below.

Lying on Edge, 140 lbs.

Even so, it’s clear it doesn’t rise to the excellent or outstanding level. The memory foam wants to create a higher degree of hug around the body, which is great when you’re lying in the middle of the mattress, but it’s less ideal on the edge.

This body contouring hug along the edge creates a weakening of the edge support. Even so, it’s not bad by any stretch, only that it could be better. Those who desire a more robust level of edge support could be disappointed.

The mattress doesn’t use any type of reinforced edge support perimeter foam, which is certainly a reason for the less-than-amazing performance.

6.9

Sex Test

The EGOHome Ego Black has mediocre sex performance. On the positive side, noise is low and edge support is outstanding with just 3.00” of sitting edge sinkage.

In addition, pressure relief is good, though it’s certainly not amazing either. The weak spots on the Ego Black are cooling and bounce.

Sex FactorFactor WeightScoreRating
Bounce65%5.7Very Low
Edge Support20%10Outstanding
Noise5%10Minimal
Pressure Relief5%8.0Good
Cooling5%6.0Mediocre

Cooling performance was mediocre. While cooling performance isn’t the most heavily weighted performance factor, it should be said that a mattress that gets notably warm during amorous activities is far from ideal.

Egohome Ego Black Edge Sitting
Egohome Ego Black Edge Sitting

Lastly, we have a bounce measuring just 5.11”. This is notably less than the average.

Less bounce makes sex more difficult, more strenuous, and more tiring. When we consider the complete picture of the factors that impact sex performance, it’s clear that sex performance on the Ego Home is only mediocre.

8.0

Pressure Relief Test

The EGOHome Ego Black has a good level of pressure relief. During our tests, I felt no significant pressure points on my body. The Ego Black is reasonably comfortable. The mattress is equipped with 6.0″ of comfort material, including a 2.0” memory foam layer and 4.0” of comfort poly foams.

Comfort Layer

6.0″

Support Layer

8.0″

The EGOHome Ego Black has 1.84″ more comfort material than the average comfort layer thickness of 4.16″, based on all of our tests to date. The foam layers aren’t the absolute best I’ve seen in terms of quality, but they aren’t bad either.

Considering the price point, these foams feel like an expected and appropriate quality level and thickness.

Egohome Ego Black Edge Support Side Sleeping With Vest

In our pressure mapping tests, we measured a max PSI of 0.81. A PSI of 2.0 is a high pressure point and the Ego Black was well south of that level.

When I consider our objective pressure mapping tests, material thickness, material quality, and my subjective experience on the mattress, I’m confident most sleepers will find the pressure relief to be good.

How firm is EGOHOME EGO Black?

The EGOHome Ego Black comes in a few different configurations regarding material and thickness:

  • Thickness Options: 12″ or 14″
  • Material Options: Foam Medium, Hybrid, or Foam Firm.

We have tested the Foam Firm and this review is the Foam Medium.

In our tests, I found this mattress to have a medium-firm feel, 6 out of 10 on or firmness scale.

Firmness Chart 6

For comparison, when we tested the Foam Firm mattress, we found that mattress to be a 7 out of 10 and with a slightly firm feel.

Firmness Chart 7

Support & Sleeping Positions

Support on the EGOHome Ego Black is good. During our tests, I felt well-supported in all sleeping positions.

The mattress is equipped with an 8.0″ support layer. This is 0.13″ thicker than the average support layer thickness of 7.87″, based on all of our tests to date.

Egohome Ego Black Top Memory Foam

For a mattress to create sufficient support, it also needs sufficient pressure relief. With 6.0” of comfort materials we found that pressure relief was good as well. The Ego Black is available in a medium (which we tested here) and the firm version.

You can see our tests on the firm version here – Ego Black Firm Review.

At the end of the day, support on the Ego Black is like so many other areas we tested. The performance is good, albeit not amazing either. Even so, when we consider the price point it really feels unfair to complain. This is a perfectly reasonable and good level of support performance for $500.

The Cover

The cover of the Ego Black is a graphene cooling cover. It is thin and the mattress claims to be “cool to the touch”. However, we did not experience any notable coolness to the cover.
