Best For
- High-profile memory foam at a budget price, 14″ mattress for under $500/queen
- Lower levels of motion transfer
- Above average edge support when sitting
Considerations
- Overall performance leaves something to be desired
- Below average cooling, response, sex, pressure relief, and off-gassing
- Only has 2.0″ of comfort material, which is over 50% less than the average (4.1″)
Our Verdict
The EGOHOME EGO Black Firm is a 14″ memory foam mattress that includes a 2.0″ memory foam comfort layer and a 12″ support layer.
It has moderate sinkage and very low levels of bounce. It feels like traditional memory foam and unfortunately carries many of the iconic disadvantages of memory foam, namely worse cooling performance and a slow material response time.
This particular mattress is available in a single firmness, 7 out of 10, which gives the mattress a slightly firm feel. If you’re looking for something softer, you may want to check out the regular EGO Black, which has a softer feel and a 6.0″ comfort layer.
In our performance tests, this mattress earned an overall score of 7.45, ranking it in the bottom 6% of all mattresses tested to date. Looking exclusively at memory foam mattresses. the rank improves a little, scoring in the bottom 18% of all memory foam mattresses tested to date.
The appeal to some sleepers would likely be the lower price tag. This mattress costs only $489 for a queen, 57% less than the average memory foam mattress. If you’re looking for a deal and don’t mind a few performance disadvantages, the EGO Black Firm may provide a good option.

How is EGOHOME EGO Black Firm Different?
The EGOHOME EGO Black Firm mattress has an overall performance level that is below average but also a price that is significantly below average—only $489 for a queen, for a savings of 57% off of the average memory foam mattress.
Advantages
Advantages of the EGOHOME EGO Black mattress include lower levels of motion transfer and better edge support, both for sitting and lying.
The low price point may also be a big advantage to some sleepers.
Neutral Factors
Neutral factors for this mattress include moderate sinkage and very low levels of bounce. This is pretty typical among other memory foam mattresses and not really a unique feel to EGOHOME.
Disadvantages
Disadvantages of the EGOHOME EGO include below-average cooling performance, slow material response time, and a struggling sex score.
Off-gassing is slower than average and both the trial and warranty are shorter than average as well.

Cooling Test
The EGOHOME EGO Black has a mediocre level of cooling performance. During our tests, I felt a moderate to high level of heat retention around my body. When we look at the materials, it’s unsurprising.
Baseline Temp.
78.8° F
Max Temp.
92.9° F
Ending Temp.
80.2° F
We have a 14” all-foam design with 2.0” of memory foam on top. In addition, the foam materials are of a more basic quality, which is great to help keep the price down, but does no favors for cooling performance.
Max Temp.

Ending Temp

- Baseline Temperature – the temperature of the mattress before anyone lies on it
- Maximum Temperature (0 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after lying on it for 15 minutes
- Ending Temperature (5 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after being lied upon and having no one on it for 5 minutes
While the mattress does use a graphene-infused cooling cover and gel foam, neither of these material components seem to make a significant positive impact on cooling.
In our objective temperature tests, we measure a max surface level temperature of 92.9°F, which is 3.2° warmer than the average of 89.7°.
Heat Dissipation Over Time

When we look at the complete picture of objective data, our subjective experience, and an analysis of the materials, I’m confident in my view that cooling is mediocre.
Sinkage Test
The EGOHOME EGO Black Firm has a moderate level of sinkage. During our tests, we measured 2.14” of pressure point sinkage. This is just a smidge over the average of 2.13”, based on all of our tests to date.
Sinkage Depth
2.14″
Sinkage Feel
Moderate
Notably, the mattress creates a more dramatic body contouring hug due to the more traditional memory foam used within the comfort layer.
The level of sinkage is documented in the image below.

However, because the sinkage depth is moderate and there is only 2.0” of comfort material, the body hug doesn’t feel excessive. It’s very well restrained in the way the foams wrap around the body.
Even so, this is still fundamentally a memory foam mattress. You’ll need to like a dramatic body contouring hug to be comfortable on the EGO.
Motion Transfer Test
The EGO Black Firm creates a very low level of motion transfer. During our tests, we measured 6.48 m/s² of acceleration range. This is 26% less motion than the average of 8.74 m/s², based on all of our tests to date.
Max. Acceleration
3.03 m/s²
Min. Acceleration
-3.45 m/s²
Accel. Range
6.48 m/s²
The EGO’s combination of all-foam design and more traditional memory foam creates the right conditions for lower motion transfer.
The level of motion transfer is also documented in the video below.
In our motion transfer chart, which visualizes our accelerometer data, we can see higher motion peaks from 0 to 0.15 seconds. Motion drops immediately thereafter and by 0.87 seconds we’ve returned to near-zero levels of energy.

While I do wish the motion duration was lower, the well-restrained motion spikes more than make up for it. Most transfer of motion should be a non-issue for most sleepers on the EGO mattress.
Response Test
The EGO Black has a moderately fast material responsiveness. During our mostly recovered test, we measured 0.6 seconds for the materials to rebound back to shape. This is 0.19 seconds slower than the average of 0.41 seconds.
Mostly Recovered
0.6 sec.
Complete Recovery
1.1 sec.
During our fully recovered test, we measured 1.1 seconds for the mattress to rebound back to shape. This is 0.20 seconds slower than the average of 0.90 seconds.
While these responsiveness speeds aren’t far from the average in absolute terms, when we consider them versus all of the mattresses tested to date, they are comparatively significantly slower.
The level of responsiveness is documented in the video below.
The EGO Black is in the bottom 13% of responsiveness speeds on our mostly recovered test and in the bottom 22% of responsiveness speeds on our fully recovered test.
This is again a byproduct of the more traditional memory foam used within the top layer of the mattress.
This foam simply takes longer to recover back to shape. For some sleepers, this level of response could create more of a stuck feeling on the mattress and make it more difficult to move around on the mattress.
Bounce Test
The EGO Black has a very low level of bounce. During our tests, we measured just 4.73” of bounce height. This is 4.91” less bounce than the average of 9.64”.
Max. Depth
3.89″
Max. Rebound
0.84″
Total Bounce
4.73″
Max. Sinkage Depth

Max Bounce Height

The all-foam design of the EGO greatly reduces bounce on the mattress. In addition, the top 2” layer of memory foam is also reducing bounce.
The level of bounce is also documented in the video below.
The lower bounce is fantastic for helping to reduce motion transfer. However, bounce at this level has a significant negative impact on sex performance and also makes it more difficult to move around on the mattress.
Edge Support Test
The EGO Black Firm has excellent sitting edge support and good lying edge support. In our sitting edge support test, we measured 3.25” of sitting sinkage compression. This is 0.78” less sitting sinkage than the average of 4.03”.
Max Sinkage
3.25″
Lying Support
Good
Even when sitting directly on the edge of the mattress I felt fully supported and there was no collapse of materials. The 14” total profile and slightly firm feel are the two biggest factors helping to create great sitting edge support.
The level of edge support while seated is documented in the images below.
Sitting, 140 lbs.

Sitting, 200 lbs.

Lying edge support was good, though not quite at the same level as sitting edge support. While lying directly on the edge of the mattress I felt reasonably well supported. That said, it’s not perfect.
The level of edge support while lying is documented in the images below.
Lying on Edge, 140 lbs.

Lying on Edge, 200 lbs.

Having only a single memory foam layer as the comfort layer creates somewhat of a squishy feeling while lying on the edge of the mattress.
To be fair, it’s not bad by any stretch. Nevertheless, it doesn’t rise to an “excellent” or “outstanding” level of lying edge support.
Sex Test
The EGO Black has mediocre sex performance. On the positive side, sitting edge support is excellent with just 3.25” of sitting edge compression.
Sex Factor | Factor Weight | Score | Rating |
---|---|---|---|
Bounce | 65% | 5.4 | Very Low |
Edge Support | 20% | 9.7 | Excellent |
Noise | 5% | 10 | Minimal |
Pressure Relief | 5% | 7.0 | Fair |
Cooling | 5% | 6.0 | Mediocre |
In addition, noise is minimal due to the all foam design. However, that’s where the pros end. Pressure relief was only fair, cooling was mediocre, and bounce was very low.

With just 4.73” of total bounce height it’s just not enough to facilitate better amorous activity. When it comes to the dance without pants the EGO Black simply leaves much to be desired.
Pressure Relief Test
The EGOHOME EGO Black has a fair level of pressure relief. During our tests, I felt slight to moderate levels of pressure points on my body. When we look at the material construction this makes perfect sense.
Comfort Layer
2.0″
Support Layer
12.0″
While we do have an incredibly thick 14” total profile, a mere 2.0” of memory foam is the totality of the comfort layer. On average, comfort layers are 4.1” thick, based on all of our tests to date.
In general, a thicker comfort layer creates better pressure relief. With just 2.0” of material there simply isn’t enough comfort foam to create better pressure relief.
In our pressure mapping test we can visually see the issues, especially while lying on my side. On my side the hip lights up as a notable pressure point, hitting 1.60 PSI. Ideally, we want to see PSI closer to 1.0. Any PSI at or near 2.0 is considered high a likely problem area.
Pressure Map – Side Sleepers

Pressure Relief (PSI) | Average | Maximum |
---|---|---|
Side Sleepers | 0.2 | 1.60 |
Pressure Map – Back Sleepers

Pressure Relief (PSI) | Average | Maximum |
---|---|---|
Back Sleepers | 0.11 | 1.01 |
Pressure Map – Stomach Sleepers

Pressure Relief (PSI) | Average | Maximum |
---|---|---|
Stomach Sleepers | 0.11 | 0.95 |
Off-Gassing Test
Off-gassing on the EGOHOME EGO Black is strong right out of the box and the odor lasted for 14 days.
Initial Smell Strength
Strong
Off-Gassing Period
14 days
Comparing 250+ mattresses tested to date, the average off-gassing period is 7 days. The EGOHOME EGO Black mattress takes twice as long to fully off-gass compared to the average.

Company
EGOHOME mattresses come with a 100-night trial period and a 10-year warranty. Shipping and returns are both free.
Company Factor | Factor Weight | Score | Data |
---|---|---|---|
Trial Period | 15% | 8.0 | 100 nights |
Warranty | 10% | 8.0 | 10 years |
Shipping | 5% | 10 | $0 |
Returns | 20% | 10 | $0 |
Trust | 50% | 8.0 | Good |
Country of Origin | 0% | USA |
Compared to the average, EGOHOME has a shorter trial period (average is 173 nights) and a shorter warranty as well. Among 250+ mattresses tested to date, 24% have lifetime warranties and the average of other 76% of mattresses is 13 years.
How firm is EGOHOME Ego?
The EgoHome Ego Black Firm has a slightly firm feel, 7 out of 10 on the firmness scale, where 10 is the most firm.

This firmness would generally be suitable for back sleepers, stomach sleepers, or those who are just looking for a firmer, more supportive feel (especially sleepers over 250 lbs).
That said, the firmer feel makes it a less than great choice for side sleepers.
Although the EGO Black Firm is only available in a single firmness, EGOHOME sells numerous other models including the Black, Black Classic, Haven, Creadling, and more.
Presumably, there would be a wider range of firmnesses with these other options.
Support & Sleeping Positions
The EGO Black Firm has a fair level of support. During our tests, I felt reasonably well-supported in all sleeping positions. Even so, I am concerned about the limited pressure relief.
With just 2.0” of comfort material there just isn’t much between sleepers and the harder support foam layers.
While the support foam will create plenty of support, it’s also likely to create pressure points and simply be uncomfortable as there isn’t enough comfort material between sleepers and the support layer.

For a mattress to create the best levels of support it needs to be both comfortable and keep the spine in a neutral alignment. I fear that the EGO Black is likely to create notable pressure and compounded support issues for heavier-weighted bodies and for many side sleepers.
The mattress uses a 12.0” support layer, which is notably thicker than the average 7.9” support layer. Even so, we simply cannot ignore the fact that there is only 2.0” of comfort material. In addition, the foams aren’t especially great quality either.

Given the price point, it’s hard to complain too much. Even so, I do think this mattress is best tuned to the needs of lightweight and moderate-weight back and stomach sleepers.
Check out the table below to see the sleeper weights and sleeping positions that would be best suited for this mattress.

The Cover
The EGO Black has a dark cover infused with graphene, which is designed to improve cooling performance. A chevron knit texture provides visual interest and a subtle texture to the surface of the mattress.

The Comfort Layer
The comfort layer is made up entirely of one single foam, a 2.0″ memory foam. This foam has some inconsistencies between what is advertised by the manufacturer and what we received.
On the manufacturer’s website, this is a hole-punched memory foam, advertised as a “ventilated copper get AeroFusion Foam” with a yellow / copper hue to it.

But the foam we received on the top layer is a gray classic memory foam, with no hole-punched ventilation added and no notable sign of copper infusion.
Considering the lower performance in both cooling and material response time, I think this traditional foam could really be hurting the performance of the EGO Black.
The Support Layer
The support layer is a 12″ high-density support foam layer. This is thicker than we typically see, especially given the thinner 2.0″ comfort layer.
But this layer is designed to provide support and stability to the mattress, which is does.

Product Evolution
This mattress was launched in early 2024 as a new mattress in the EGOHOME mattress lineup. Since its release, there have been no major design or material updates made to the mattress.

For Performance

Novosbed
8.87 Overall Score
The Novosbed is an 11″ memory foam mattress with a 4″ comfort layer and comes in three firmness levels—soft (4), medium-firm (6), or firm (8). It outperforms the EGO in 7 out of 8 of the testing categories we score. The price is higher ($999 for a queen), but the performance is also significantly better.
For Cooling

Nectar Premier
8.64 Overall Score
The Nectar Premier is a 13″ memory foam mattress with a 6.0″ comfort layer and a medium feel (5 out of 10 on the firmness scale). It has moderate sinkage and low levels of bounce. While edge sinkage is deeper than the EGO, it has many other testing categories that are a big improvement over the EGO Black.
For Budget

Silk & Snow
7.85 Overall Score
The Silk & Snow is a 10″ memory foam mattress good for sleepers trying to keep the budget in check. It has a 4.0″ comfort layer with moderate sinkage and low levels of bounce. A queen mattress is only $650. Although this is higher than the EGO Black, it is still 41% less than the average memory foam mattress price.

If you’re looking for something softer than the EGO Black Firm, you may want to check out the EGO Black, a 14″ memory foam mattress 6.0″ of comfort material (instead of only 2.0″ on the Black Firm). This extra material gives the mattress a softer feel and likely better pressure relief as well.
This mattress offers free returns within the 100-night trial period. While this trial is shorter than the average (173 nights) it should still be long enough for most sleepers to decide if they like or don’t like the mattress.
