June 2024 Update – Crafted Sleep appears to be discontinued / out of business. The company’s website is no longer live. Some models are still being sold on Wayfair for the time being.

Best For
- Budget-friendly at $899 for a Queen
- Near instant response time of 0.2 seconds
- Higher bounce is beneficial for ease of movement and sex
Considerations
- High level of motion transfer won’t be ideal for many couples
- Both sitting and lying edge support are less than great
- Relatively thin 2.5” comfort layer
Our Verdict
The Crafted Sleep mattress is a flippable hybrid with a medium soft or medium firm feel. It comes in at a budget price and offers a nice entry-level mattress for sleepers looking for a flippable hybrid that won’t break the bank.
During our performance tests, this mattress had fantastic response time and higher levels of bounce. With only 2.5″ of comfort material though, pressure relief is a little lacking and I wouldn’t recommend this mattress for sleepers over 250 lbs.
It’s not a perfect mattress, but at this price point it does far more right than it does wrong. It’s a solid performer overall at a more budget-friendly price tag.

How is Crafted Sleep Different?
The Crafted Sleep 2-Sided Hybrid has a few key differences that help the mattress to stand out among other Crafted Sleep mattresses or all hybrids in general. Here are the three most prominent points.

#1. Price Point
The Crafted Sleep hybrid comes in well under $1000 for a queen, which is pretty unusual, especially for a hybrid design. If you’re looking for a blend of foam and coils, but want to keep the sticker shock in check, the Craft Sleep hybrid is a solid pick.
#2. Flippable Firmness
Flippable firmness is another advantage of this mattress. Flippable mattresses can offer extended lifespans as well as more options if your firmness needs change from time to time. On this mattress, you can pick from a medium soft side (4 out of 10 firmness) or a medium firm side (6 out of 10 firmness).
#3 High Profile
Despite the lower price tag, the Crafted Sleep mattress still offers a high 14″ profile. For sleepers looking for that lofted aesthetic or who don’t want the hassle of a traditional boxspring, this hybrid certainly has some advantages.
Cooling Test
The Crafted Sleep 14” 2-Sided Hybrid had excellent cooling performance. In our tests, I did not experience any significant level of heat retention.
The mattress uses a relatively thin 2.5” foam comfort layer, which means there is less physical material into which heat could be absorbed. While a thinner foam comfort layer has negative implications for pressure relief (which we’ll discuss below), at least with respect to cooling, it’s beneficial.
Baseline Temp.
80.5° F
Max Temp.
87.9° F
Ending Temp.
81.8° F
The mattress uses a thin cover, which further improves breathability, as air can easily flow in and out. Lastly, the coil layer is of course mostly air.
Max Temp.

Ending Temp

- Baseline Temperature – the temperature of the mattress before anyone lies on it
- Maximum Temperature (0 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after lying on it for 15 minutes
- Ending Temperature (5 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after being lied upon and having no one on it for 5 minutes
With respect to design and materials, the mattress checks many of the boxes we look for.
Looking at our objective data, the Crafted Sleep 2-sided hybrid had a max temp of 87.9°. This is 1.6° F cooler than the average max temperature of 89.5 degrees. The heat dissipation curve was good, but not amazing.
Heat Dissipation Over Time
Time Elapsed | Temperature |
---|---|
1 minute | 84.4° |
2 minutes | 82.9° |
3 minutes | 82.2° |
4 minutes | 82.5° |
5 minutes | 81.8° |
The 0 to 1-minute decline was 3.5° (slightly worse than average), while the 0 to 5-minute decline was 6.1°(slightly worse than average).

Considering the lower than average max temperature this gives the total cooling performance an above-average level of performance. Overall, I’m pleased with the cooling performance.
Sinkage Test
The Crafted Sleep 2-Sided Hybrid has a moderate level of sinkage. In our tests, we measured a pressure point sinkage depth of 2.18”.
This is 0.06” less sinkage than the average (based on all of our tests to date) of 2.24”. The mattress has a pretty typical memory foam contouring hug around the body. It’s a more precise contour that forms to your exact shape.
The level of sinkage is documented in the image below.

The luxury firm side is a bit more restrained compared to the feel on the medium, but both are still fairly significant. The mattress allows for notably deeper sinkage for heavier portions of your body, especially hips, butt, shoulders, and midsection.
Some sleepers really like this feel, while others may find the level of sinkage to be too deep. I could see many heavier-weight sleepers feeling that the level of midsection sinkage is simply too deep.
For this reason, I am not in love with this mattress for sleepers over 250 pounds.
Motion Transfer Test
The Crafted Sleep 2-Sided Hybrid has a moderate to high level of motion transfer.
In our tests, we measured 9.64 m/s² of acceleration range in our motion transfer tests. This is 2.82 m/s² more motion than the average of 6.82 m/s² (based on all of our tests to date).
The level of motion transfer is documented in the video below.
When we look at the material layers and design this level of motion transfer is not surprising. There is a fairly thin foam comfort layer of only 2.5” on top of a high bounce coil unit.
Max. Acceleration
3.05 m/s²
Min. Acceleration
-6.59 m/s²
Accel. Range
9.64 m/s²
With not much foam to absorb energy you end up with more motion. It’s not quite to the level of more traditional coil mattresses, but it certainly leans more in that direction.
If we look at our motion transfer chart, which visualizes our accelerometer data, we can see the highest levels of motion from 0.00 to 0.21 seconds. A moderate level of motion persists until 0.99 seconds before returning to near zero levels.

The motion spikes are high, as is the motion duration. I could see many sleepers who are more sensitive to motion transfer finding this level of motion to simply be too much.
Response Test
The Crafted Sleep 2-Sided Hybrid has a very fast response time. In our tests, we measured a mostly recovered response time of 0.2 seconds and a fully recovered response time of 0.8 seconds.
Mostly Recovered
0.2 sec.
Complete Recovery
0.8 sec.
This is notably faster than the average for both categories. Based on all of our tests to date we have measured an average mostly recovered response time of 0.50 seconds and an average fully recovered response time of 0.95 seconds.
The level of responsiveness is documented in the video below.
As with many other performance categories, the material layers and design is having a significant impact on the performance.
The type of foam and relative thinness of the comfort layer helps the mattress to rebound to shape almost instantly. For most sleepers, I expect the response time to be more than sufficiently fast enough.
Bounce Test
The Crafted Sleep 2-Sided Hybrid has a high level of bounce. In our tests, we measured a total bounce height of 10.33”.
Max. Depth
6.23″
Max. Rebound
4.10″
Total Bounce
10.33″
This is 0.80” more bounce than the average of 9.53”, based on all of our tests to date. Typically, I like to see 8-12” of bounce.
Max. Sinkage Depth

Max Bounce Height

While the high bounce is certainly having a negative impact on motion transfer, it also creates a more traditional feel, improves sex, and makes it easy to move around on the mattress.
The level of bounce is also documented in the video below.
Overall, I’m pleased with the level of bounce. It’s within the sweet spot of the ideal range that I look for.
Edge Support Test
Both sitting and lying edge support on the Crafted Sleep mattress leaves much to be desired. In our sitting edge support tests, we measured 5.5” of total sinkage compression.
Max Sinkage
5.50″
Lying Support
Excellent
This is 0.92” deeper edge sitting sinkage compared to the average of 4.58”. When it comes to edge support, even being average isn’t where you want to be. The best edge support experience starts at 4.0” of sitting sinkage compression or less.
Suffice to say, the Crafted Sleep mattress is significantly deeper and therefore does not create ideal support for sitting directly on the edge.
The level of edge support while seated is documented in the images below.
Sitting, 140 lbs.

Sitting, 200 lbs.

Edge support while lying directly on the edge is similar. The mattress has a higher degree of hug and contour. When you try to extend that to the edge you end up with the mattress creating a sharper downward angle away from the mattress.
The level of edge support while lying is documented in the images below.
Lying on Edge, 140 lbs.

Lying on Edge, 200 lbs.

This creates less than great edge support, especially on my back. While on my side the edge support is notably better, but still far from amazing.
Overall, I’m just not thrilled with this level of edge support. Even so, at this price point, it’s not an uncommon issue.

Sex Test
To score sex performance we look at a number of different factors that all play a role in quality sex. Three of the most important factors include:
Sex Bounce
10
Edge Support
8.8
Noise
10
In addition to the factors above, there are a few other things to consider as well, like pressure relief and cooling.
Here’s a look at our complete sex formula:
Sex Score Formula = (Bounce * 0.6) + (Edge Support * 0.2) + (Noise * 0.1) + (Pressure Relief * 0.05) + (Cooling * 0.05)
We use the following scores, plugged into the formula, to derive a sex score for each mattress.
Sex Factor | Factor Weight | Score | Rating |
---|---|---|---|
Bounce | 65% | 8.9 | High |
Edge Support | 20% | 6.9 | Mediocre |
Noise | 5% | 10 | Minimal |
Pressure Relief | 5% | 8.0 | Good |
Cooling | 5% | 9.0 | Excellent |
Overall, this score is pretty good, but not the best that we’ve seen. Bounce was pretty high, which helps the sex score. However, edge support was lacking, which hurts the score. These two factors alone make up 80% of the sex score.

The other 20% of the score is made up of noise performance, pressure relief, and cooling.
The Crafted Sleep mattress is very quiet, has good pressure relief, and good cooling as well.
Pressure Relief Test
The Crafted Sleep 14” 2-Sided Hybrid has good, but not great pressure relief. In our tests, I felt reasonably good pressure relief in most positions. However, at times I did feel minor pressure points building (especially in my shoulder blades).
Comfort Layer
5.0″
Support Layer
9.0″
In my view, the comfort layer is the primary issue for pressure relief. Having just 2.5” of comfort material is going to cause sleepers to more significantly engage with the pocket coils.

Only having 2.5” of comfort material is worrisome, especially for heavier-weight sleepers. Sleepers over 250 I could see having more significant pressure relief problems.
Overall, I found the pressure relief to be good, just not great. As with many other performance areas, the Crafted Sleep mattress does lag behind.
However, given the incredibly competitive price point, it’s not surprising. If you want a mattress at this budget level there are certain performance areas you need to be willing to sacrifice.
Off-Gassing Test
The Crafted Sleep Hybrid mattress had a strong smell right out of the box. It smelled for well over a week, finally dissipating off at day 9.
Initial Smell Strength
Strong
Off-Gassing Period
9 days
If you’re sensitive to strong smells this could be an issue for you. But bear in mind, that a mattress only has to off-gas once. Once it is fully off-gassed, the process is done and you’re good to go.

To speed up off-gassing, remember to place the mattress in a well-ventilated space and leave off bedding or mattress protectors until the process is complete.
Company
Crafted Sleep offers good terms including a 120-night trial period, a 15-year warranty, free shipping, and free returns if it ends up not working out.
Company Factor | Factor Weight | Score | Data |
---|---|---|---|
Trial Period | 15% | 8.0 | 120 nights |
Warranty | 10% | 10 | 25 years |
Shipping | 5% | 10 | $0 |
Returns | 20% | 10 | $0 |
Trust | 50% | 6.0 | Mediocre |
Country of Origin | 0% | USA |
All Crafted Sleep mattresses are made in the US as well. Across the board, this is above average in terms of trial period and warranty.
How firm is Crafted Sleep?
The Crafted Sleep 2-sided Hybrid is available in 2 firmnesses—medium or luxury firm. You can get the same firmness on both sides or one firmness for each side, dependign on your personal preferences
We tested the version with the medium on one side and luxury firm on the other side.
- Medium = 4.5 out of 10 firmness
- Luxury firm = 6 out of 10 firmness

Luxury Firm Firmness

Support & Sleeping Positions
Support on the Crafted Sleep 2-Sided Hybrid is good, but not great. As with pressure relief, the limited 2.5” comfort layer is the primary issue.
The 2.5” foam layer is fairly thin and its relative density and material types cause sleepers to sink through it and more directly engage with the pocketed coil base. As a result, this creates a more traditional coil-based supportive feel.

Heavy portions of the body being able to more easily sink through the top comfort layers means those portions of the body interact with the pocketed coils more.
Sleeper Weight | Stomach Sleepers | Side Sleepers | Back Sleepers |
---|---|---|---|
Under 150 lbs. | Yes | Yes | Yes |
150-250 lbs. | Yes | Yes | Yes |
250-300 lbs. | No | No | No |
Given the sinkage depth that we measured in our tests, I don’t think this mattress will create enough support for sleepers over 250 pounds.
For sleepers below 250 lbs. you will likely find the support to be sufficient (especially below 200), however, it certainly has a feel that leans more in the direction of traditional coil mattresses.
Some love that feel, others don’t. It’s less a performance issue and more a personal preference.
Design
The Crafted Sleep 2-Sided Hybrid is a 14″ hybrid mattress with foam and coils. It has a flippable design and you can choose two different firmnesses for each side (or the same firmness for both sides).
Type
Hybrid
Thickness
14″
Firmness
4.5 or 6

Materials
There are five main layers on the Crafted Sleep mattress. From top to bottom, these layers include:
- 1.5″ gel memory foam
- 1.0″ poly foam
- 8.0″ pocketed coils
- 1.0″ poly foam
- 1.5″ get memory foam

The Cover
The Crafted Sleep cover is thin with a breathable, moisture-wicking finish to it. This helps it to release warm air, as well and keep you cool as you sleep.

The Comfort Layer
The comfort layer includes a 1.5″ gel-infused memory foam for cooling and fast response time.

Below the gel foam is a 1.0″ layer of transitional poly foam. This helps to ease the transition between foam and support coils below.
The Support Layer
The support layer is an 8.0″ layer of pocketed coils with a bit of foam wrapped around the coils at the edge. Foam-wrapping the coils dampens sound from the coils and also provides a bit of reinforced edge support (albeit not much).

Product Evolution
The Crafted Sleep 2-Sided Hybrid was launched in early 2022 and has not had any significant changes to the design or materials since launching.
If / when Crafted Sleep changes the design of the mattress we’ll be sure to update this section.

For Pressure Relief

Bear Hybrid
4.0″ of Comfort Material
While the Bear Hybrid isn’t as inexpensive as the Crafted Sleep mattress, it offers excellent pressure relief with 4.0″ of comfort material, 25% more material than the Crafted Sleep hybrid. This mattress would be a better option for heavier sleepers.
For Flippable

Nest Bedding Robin
Flippable with 10″ Profile
The Nest Bedding Robin has a flippable design with 2.0″ of comfort material and 6″ of pocketed coils. It is 4″ thinner than the Crafted Sleep for a more modern aesthetic if that’s what you’re looking for.
For Luxury

Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid
12″ Profile with Luxury Feel
The Amerisleep AS3 Hybrid has a 3″ memory foam comfort layer and plush quilted cover. It isn’t flippable but comes in at a 5 out of 10, a nice middle ground between the two-sided firmness of the Crafted Sleep.
