Our Verdict

To date, we have tested 7 of the Casper mattresses. The average score of a Casper mattress is 8.36, just slightly lower than the average score across all mattresses tested to date (8.63).

The most basic model, The Casper, was a reasonably good performer, especially considering the price point. It was at the same level as the more expensive Casper Original and Casper’s Costco mattress, the Casper Select.

The Casper Original Hybrid is arguably the best value Casper, as its performance was at the same level as the Wave and Nova Hybrids, while being notably less expensive.

If you just want the best then go with the Casper Snow. If you’re on a budget and need to maximize value then the Casper Original Hybrid is the right choice.

Casper mattresses are available for purchase at Casper.com (US) and Casper.ca (Canada).

Best For

  • A queen mattress under $1000
  • Extremely fast response time
  • Balanced feel of hug and pushback

Considerations

  • Edge support struggles a bit, could pose issues if you often find yourself on the edge
  • Moderate heat retention

Our Verdict

The Casper, originally called the Casper Element Pro, is a budget-friendly all-foam mattress and was introduced as a substitute to the Casper Original (at a lower price point).

It contains a combination of poly foam, memory foam, and support foam. This mattress has only a 9″ thickness, with only 3″ of that making up the comfort layer.

This is a bit thinner than I like to see for optimal pressure relief and support. For this reason, this mattress may not be the right choice for heavier sleepers, especially those who sleep on their back or stomach.

Best For

  • Lightweight and/or side sleepers
  • Deep sinkage, while retaining a fast material response time
  • Good edge support

Considerations

  • Higher level of motion transfer
  • Softer feel may not be supportive enough for heavier sleepers
  • Moderate level of heat retention

Our Verdict

The Casper Nova Hybrid mattress has a 12″ profile and a soft-medium feel. It provides a deep level of sinkage while retaining fast response and high levels of bounce.

In our tests we found that the mattress had very fast material response, outstanding pressure relief, and excellent sex performance (due to high bounce and good edge support).

However, cooling, motion transfer, and off-gassing all left something to be desired.

The price of the Nova Hybrid is notably more than the average hybrid, but if you’re specifically looking for a softer Casper, this may be a good mattress for some sleepers.

The Casper Nova Hybrid is available for purchase at Casper.com (US) and Casper.ca (Canada).

Best For

  • Very fast response time
  • Excellent edge support with only 3.75″ edge sinkage
  • High level of bounce

Considerations

  • May not be supportive enough for sleepers over 250 lbs.
  • Moderately high levels of motion transfer
  • May sleep “warm” or “hot” for sleepers who are sensitive to cooling issues

Our Verdict

The Casper Original is an all foam mattress with a medium-firm feel. In our tests, we found the Casper performed well in response time, edge support, and sex. However, cooling, pressure relief, and off-gassing all left something to be desired.

The Casper Original is similar to the less expensive “The Casper” mattress. In our tests, we found overall performance to be the nearly the same. As a result, I am hard-pressed to recommend the Casper Original over the less expensive Casper.

For sleepers who like the feel and design of Casper, but want a higher performance option, the Casper Original Hybrid represents a more significant step up in terms of performance, while not being significantly more expensive.

Best For

  • Excellent edge support, only 2.25″ edge sinkage when seated
  • Very fast response time
  • Excellent cooling with a perforated top comfort layer

Considerations

  • Higher levels of motion transfer may be an issue for sensitive sleepers
  • Only 3.5″ of comfort material, may not be suitable for heavier sleepers over 250 lbs.

Our Verdict

The Casper Original Hybrid mattress is a low-profile hybrid mattress (10.5″ thick) with a combination of poly foam, memory foam, and pocketed coils. It offers good performance across the board with the one exception being high levels of motion transfer.

The price of the Casper Original Hybrid does put this mattress at the higher end of the pricing spectrum ($1495 for a queen compared to $1298, the average price of a hybrid mattress).

If you’re specifically looking for a Casper, the Original Hybrid outperforms the Casper Original and it’s a reasonably good value at $1495.

The Casper Original Hybrid is available for purchase at Casper.com (US) and Casper.ca (Canada).

  • Affordable price if you’re on a tight budget

Considerations

  • Higher levels of motion transfer than other foam mattresses
  • Low levels of bounce may hinder sex performance

Our Verdict

The Casper Select mattress is a budget-friendly Casper option that is sold directly through Costco. This mattress is a 12″ foam mattress that uses poly foam, gel memory foam, and a support foam base.

Performance on the Casper Select is good, albeit not incredible. It has good cooling performance, an extremely fast response time, and good edge support. It did struggle a bit with high levels of motion transfer, and good (but not great) levels of pressure relief.

For sleepers on a tighter budget and prefer the all foam feel this could be a good option.

  • Outstanding cooling performance with a memory foam feel
  • Excellent edge support, only 3.25″ of sinkage when seated directly on the edge
  • Excellent pressure relief for side sleepers under 250 lbs.

Considerations

  • Very slow material response time
  • Very long off-gassing period
  • Deep sinkage and a classic memory foam feel, may not be right for all sleepers

Our Verdict

The Casper Snow mattress is an 11.5″ hybrid (12.0″ according to the manufacturer) made of memory foam and pocketed coils. In addition, it’s equipped with a few notable cooling features, including a phase-change infused cover, cooling “bands”, and a spray-on phase-change foam treatment.

It offers a traditional memory foam feel with deep sinkage and contour, paired with moderate levels of bounce. Response time is incredibly slow so you’ll need to absolutely love the feel of memory foam to enjoy this mattress.

The Snow Hybrid is available in a single firmness with a medium feel (5 out of 10 on the firmness scale).

Concerning overall performance, the Casper Snow has a score of 8.51, which is just below the average score (8.64) we see across all mattresses tested to date.

The price is also quite a bit higher—33% more than the average memory foam hybrid. Looking at all memory foam hybrids we’ve tested, the Snow Hybrid performs in the bottom 20% overall. That said, much of the weaker score is the result of the incredibly slow material response. If you don’t mind slow material response it may be something you could overlook.

  • Good edge support, only 3.25″ of sinkage when seated
  • Very high bounce contributes to better sex performance

Considerations

  • More expensive than average without improved performance
  • Higher levels of motion transfer
  • Good, but not great cooling performance

Our Verdict

The Casper Wave Hybrid mattress is a 12″ hybrid mattress with a medium feel, designed to be well-suited for a wide range of sleeper preferences. The price is higher than the average hybrid, but that’s the case with most Casper mattresses.

In our performance tests, the Casper Wave Hybrid scored well across the board scoring perfect 10’s for extremely fast response time and outstanding pressure relief. Edge support was also very good.

The only real areas where the Wave Hybrid struggles is motion transfer and cooling. The combination of coils, latex foam, gel pods, and perforated poly foam creates a surface that allows for higher levels of motion transfer. With respect to cooling, the mattress is good, but far from great.

Casper’s Original Hybrid and Snow mattresses were notably better when it came to cooling performance.

The Casper Wave Hybrid is available for purchase at Casper.com (US) and Casper.ca (Canada).

Generally, I like to see 4″ of edge sinkage (or less) when sitting. Any more than that and you start to feel the effects and may feel unsupported when sitting or lying.

For reference, the average level of sinkage (when sitting right at the edge of the mattress) is 4.27″.

All Casper mattresses perform better than average. The only Casper mattress that has sinkage beyond 4.0″ is The Casper, which had a max sinkage of 4.25″.

Sex Test

The best mattresses for sex have high bounce, good edge support, quiet materials, and good pressure relief and cooling.

These 5 factors make up the NapLab sex performance score.

Considering these factors, the Casper Nova Hybrid (9.0) and Casper Wave Hybrid (9.3) are the best mattresses for sex.

The Casper Original (8.7) and Casper Snow Hybrid (8.3) are not far behind in score.

These four mattresses mentioned have higher levels of bounce and better edge support than other Caspers (ie: Casper Select and The Casper).

Pressure Relief Test

Pressure relief is good on all Casper mattresses we’ve tested with anywhere from 3-5″ of comfort material.

Pressure Relief TestScoreComfort LayerSupport Layer

Generally, a thicker comfort layer yields better pressure relief, especially for heavier sleepers. The Casper Nova Hybrid and Casper Wave Hybrid exhibit this fact with perfect pressure relief scores of 10 out of 10… and also 5.0″ of comfort material.

As comfort layers get thinner with other Casper mattresses, Pressure Relief scores also drop.

Off-Gassing Test

All Casper mattresses have strong odors right out of the box, but the exact length of off-gassing period varies based on each mattress.

Compared to the average trial length of 160 nights, Casper is 37.5% shorter. While the trial is less than average, you still have over 3 months to decide if you like the mattress. For most sleepers, this should be sufficient.

Firmness

The firmness level of Casper ranges from 4.5 to 6.5 out of 10, where 10 is the most firm. This is a Soft to Medium-Firm feel that is usually suitable for a wide range of sleepers.
