Our Verdict

The Brooklyn Bedding ThermoBalance is a 14.00″ hybrid mattress made of memory foam, poly foam, and a pocketed coil base. It is designed as a luxury hybrid with a high-profile aesthetic and strong performance.

The Brooklyn Bedding ThermoBalance is available in three firmness levels — soft, medium-firm, and firm. We tested the Medium-Firm version, which was a 6 out of 10 on the firmness scale. I would estimate the Soft version to be a 4 out of 10 and the firm version would be an 8 out of 10.

The Medium-Firm version of this mattress has very deep sinkage and low levels of bounce. Given the memory foam materials, the ThermoBalance has a more dramatic contour with a more exacting hug.

In our performance tests, this mattress earned an overall score of 9.26, ranking the mattress in the top 5% of all mattresses tested to date.

The Brooklyn Bedding ThermoBalance is $1,899 for a queen-sized mattress, which is 30% more expensive than average. While the price is higher, the performance is also top-tier, making the ThermoBalance an attractive choice for sleepers looking for that luxury feel.

How is Brooklyn Bedding ThermoBalance Different?

The Brooklyn Bedding ThermoBalance is a 14.00″ hybrid mattress with an overall performance level that is better than average and a price that is slightly more expensive than the average—30% more than the average mattress.

Advantages

Advantages of the ThermoBalance include better cooling performance, lower levels of motion transfer, and a faster material response time. Edge support and pressure relief are also better than average.

This mattress has a 5.25″ comfort layer, where the average is only 4.29″ thick. It is also 14″ thick, whereas the average mattress is only 12.22″ thick.

Neutral Factors

Neutral factors include very deep sinkage and low levels of bounce. Both sinkage and bounce are considered “neutral” since different sleepers will have different preferences in these areas. If you like sleeping “in the mattress” and more restrained bounce, you will likely really enjoy the feel of the Brooklyn Bedding ThermoBalance.

Brooklyn Bedding Thermobalance Relaxing
Brooklyn Bedding ThermoBalance Relaxing

Off-gassing is another factor that is somewhat neutral since the mattress’s off-gassing duration was right at the average level.

Disadvantages

Disadvantages of the mattress are limited to company policies. The ThermoBalance has a shorter trial period (120 nights) compared to the average (192 nights), and they do charge a return fee if things don’t work out.

The return fee is $99 on any mattress that you decide to send back within the trial period.

Cooling Test

The Brooklyn Bedding ThermoBalance has outstanding cooling. During our tests, I did not feel any significant level of heat retention around my body.

Baseline Temp.

76.0° F

Max. Temp.

89.0° F

Ending Temp.

79.6° F

This mattress is packed with numerous cooling design features and materials. Starting from the top, we have a cover woven with cooling fibers. This cooling cover creates a notably cool-to-the-touch feel and maintains its cooler feel during our tests.

Immediately below the cover, we have a poly foam layer infused with phase change material (PCM). High-quality PCMs help to deliver lower temperatures and a cooler feel.

Max. Temp.

Ending Temp.

Brooklyn Bedding Thermobalance Cooling After
Brooklyn Bedding ThermoBalance Cooling After
  • Baseline Temperature – the temperature of the mattress before anyone lies on it
  • Maximum Temperature (0 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after lying on it for 15 minutes
  • Ending Temperature (5 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after being lied upon and having no one on it for 5 minutes

Beyond that, we have high-quality foams throughout the mattress that all seem to breathe well and avoid excess heat retention. At a more foundational level, we have a hybrid design, which means we’ve got a layer of support coils bringing extra airflow into the mattress.

In our objective temperature tests, we measured a max surface level temperature of 89.0° F. This is 1.1° cooler than the average of 90.1° F, based on all of our tests to date.

After getting off the mattress, the temperature declined by 5.1 degrees from minutes 0 to 1, which is 0.3 degrees cooler than the average 0 to 1 minute decline of 4.8 degrees.

Heat Dissipation Over Time

Brooklyn Bedding Thermobalance Heat Dissipation Chart

When we consider the combination of objective data, my subjective experiences, and an analysis of the materials, I’m confident in my view that cooling is outstanding.

Sinkage Test

The Brooklyn Bedding ThermoBalance has very deep sinkage. During our tests, we measured a pressure point sinkage depth of 2.71″. This is 0.46″ more sinkage than the average sinkage depth of 2.25″, based on all of our tests to date.

Sinkage Depth

Sinkage Feel

Body Contour

Dramatic

The level of sinkage is documented in the image below.

Brooklyn Bedding Thermobalance Sinkage Test
Brooklyn Bedding ThermoBalance Sinkage Test

The mattress creates a more dramatic body contouring hug. The mattress uses a thick pillow top cover, multiple memory foam layers, and has a very deep sinkage. This combination creates a more enveloping feel and a more pronounced hug around the body.

Notably, the mattress doesn’t create the same type of super precise and exacting hug around the body that a more traditional memory foam mattress will. However, the deeper sinkage and use of memory foam, in addition to other foam types, does still create a notable hug.

8.9

Motion Transfer Test

The Brooklyn Bedding ThermoBalance has a low level of motion transfer. During our tests, we measured a total acceleration range of 7.45 m/s².

Accel. Range

7.45 m/s²

Motion Duration

0.89 seconds

This is 16% less motion transfer than the average of 8.84 m/s². The ThermoBalance greatly reduces motion through a combination of a thicker-than-average comfort layer, high-quality materials, and usage of memory foam.

These materials greatly reduce bounce and also disperse energy, thereby reducing motion transfer.

The level of motion transfer is also documented in the video below.

In our motion transfer chart, which visualizes our accelerometer data, we can see the highest motion peaks from 0 to 0.2 seconds. Motion drops off notably thereafter. By 0.89 seconds, we’ve returned to near-zero levels of energy, which is exactly the same as the average motion duration of 0.89 seconds.

Motion Transfer Over Time

Brooklyn Bedding Thermobalance Motion Transfer Chart

While motion duration could have been better, it’s more than short enough when considering the below-average level of motion intensity. Given the low motion intensity and reasonable motion duration, I expect most sleepers will find this level of motion transfer to be perfectly satisfactory.

9.1

Response Test

The Brooklyn Bedding ThermoBalance has a very fast mostly recovered response time and a fast fully recovered response time. In our mostly recovered test, we measured a recovery speed of 0.3 seconds, which is 0.12 seconds faster than the average of 0.42 seconds, based on all of our tests to date.

Mostly Recovered

0.3 sec.

Fully Recovered

0.8 sec.

In our fully recovered responsiveness test, we measured a recovery speed of 0.8 seconds, which is 0.22 seconds faster than the average of 1.02 seconds.

The level of responsiveness is documented in the video below.

While these material recovery speeds aren’t quite instant, they will still be more than fast enough for most sleepers. A faster material recovery speed helps to ensure you’ll never feel stuck in the mattress and it’s easy to move around on, change positions, and get in / out of bed.

Bounce Test

The Brooklyn Bedding ThermoBalance has a low level of bounce. During our tests, we measured a total bounce height of 7.80″.

Max. Depth

5.30″

Max. Rebound

2.50″

Total Bounce

7.80″

This is 0.91″ less bounce than the average of 8.71″, based on all of our tests to date. The lower-than-average level of bounce is a product of the thicker-than-average comfort layer and the usage of memory foam.

Max. Sinkage Depth

Brooklyn Bedding Thermobalance Bounce Depth
Brooklyn Bedding Thermobalance Bounce Depth

Max. Bounce Height

Brooklyn Bedding Thermobalance Bounce Rebound

The level of bounce is also documented in the video below.

When foam layers are thicker, they typically absorb and disperse more energy, which means there is less energy that can be returned as bounce. Memory foam, in particular, does a fantastic job of absorbing and dispersing energy.

The ThermoBalance uses 2.0” of memory foam, which is likely to have an outsized impact on bounce reduction. All that to say, the lower level of bounce is a major factor that’s helping to keep motion transfer lower. And yet, lower bounce also makes sex performance worse, so there are pros and cons worth considering.

9.7

Edge Support Test

The Brooklyn Bedding ThermoBalance has excellent sitting edge support and outstanding lying edge support.

Max. Sinkage

3.50″

Lying Support

Outstanding

Reinforced Edge

Yes

In our sitting edge support test, we measured a sitting sinkage compression of 3.50″. This is 0.39″ less sitting sinkage than the average of 3.89″, based on all of our tests to date.

The level of edge support while seated is documented in the images below.

Sitting, 140 lbs.

Sitting, 200 lbs.

While lying directly on the edge of the mattress, I felt that the support was outstanding in all sleeping positions. This mattress is equipped with reinforced coils along the sides of the mattress.

However, those reinforcing coils do not fully encircle the perimeter, so the head / foot isn’t as supportive as the sides of the mattress are. Even so, overall edge support is fantastic.

The level of edge support while lying is documented in the images below.

The combination of a thicker-than-average mattress height, high-quality materials, and reinforcing edge coils is all working together to deliver robust support for both sitting and lying.

8.2

Sex Test

The Brooklyn Bedding ThermoBalance has good sex performance.

Brooklyn Bedding Thermobalance Edge Sitting
Brooklyn Bedding ThermoBalance Edge Sitting

First up, let’s talk through the positives. 4 of our 5 sex testing categories earned excellent or outstanding scores. We saw minimal noise and outstanding pressure relief and cooling.

In addition, edge support is excellent, with just 3.50” of sitting edge sinkage. The more robust edge extends the usable surface area of the mattress.

Sex FactorFactor WeightScoreRating
Bounce65%7.4Moderate
Edge Support20%9.4Excellent
Noise5%10Minimal
Pressure Relief5%10Outstanding
Cooling5%10Outstanding

The one performance area that’s lacking is bounce, which we measured at 7.80”. This is less than average. When it comes to sex, more bounce is almost always better, and bounce is the most important factor for creating ideal sex performance.

This more restrained bounce makes sex a bit more tiring and strenuous on the mattress. Despite the limited bounce, overall sex performance is still good, but it’s clear it doesn’t rise to the excellent or outstanding level.

10

Pressure Relief Test

The Brooklyn Bedding ThermoBalance has an outstanding level of pressure relief. During our tests, I felt no notable pressure point build up.

Comfort Layer

5.25″

Support Layer

8.75″

Quite to the contrary, the mattress is exceedingly comfortable to lie on, even while lying in the same position for extended periods. The mattress is equipped with 5.25″ of comfort material, which is 0.95″ more comfort material than the average comfort layer thickness of 4.3″, based on all of our tests to date.

The combination of a thicker-than-average comfort layer, high-quality materials, and pillow top cover set the stage for fantastic comfort and pressure relief. While this mattress does use multiple memory foam layers, we also have a mix of poly foam, pillow top, and pocketed coils.

Brooklyn Bedding Thermobalance Side Sleeping
Brooklyn Bedding ThermoBalance Side Sleeping

This mix of material types helps to balance out the overall feel and create a less polarizing comfort dynamic that many types of sleepers will enjoy. In our objective pressure mapping tests, we measured a max PSI of 0.70. This is well within the 1.0 PSI threshold I want to see all pressure maps within.

When I consider our objective pressure mapping tests, material thickness, material quality, and my subjective experience on the mattress, I’m confident most sleepers will find the pressure relief to be outstanding.

Support & Sleeping Positions

Support on the Brooklyn Bedding ThermoBalance is outstanding. During our tests, I felt well supported in all sleeping positions.

The mattress is equipped with an 8.75″ support layer. This is 0.83″ thicker than the average support layer thickness of 7.92″, based on all of our tests to date.

In all mattress tests, we make a point to cut the mattress open to examine the material quality. In doing so, I’m extremely pleased with what I see.

The materials look and feel high quality at every level, both on the body and in-hand. Moving on, this mattress is available in 3 firmness levels: soft, medium, and firm.

Having more options is ideal, as it increases the chance you’ll be able to find a firmness that works best for your body type, preferences, and sleeping positions. We tested the medium version, which creates a good balance of comfort and support.

For most sleepers, the medium version is the best choice. If you’re an exclusive side sleeper, lighter weighted, and/or strongly prefer a more plush mattress, then the soft could be the better choice.

If you’re an exclusive back or stomach sleeper, heavier weighted, and/or strongly prefer a firm feel, then the firm version could be the better choice.

Lastly, this mattress uses a zoned coil unit with firmer coils in the center 1/3rd of the mattress. Zoned support is excellent, as it helps to improve support for sleepers and better resist sagging and body impressions.

Based on all of my tests to date, an analysis of the materials, and my subjective experiences, I’m confident that most sleepers will find support on the Brooklyn Bedding ThermoBalance is outstanding.

A circular quilted pattern and gusset stitching on the sides of the mattress give the ThermoBalance a more luxury mattress look. The sides of the mattress have a dark fabric, similar to the top, but with vertical stitching instead of circular accents.

The Comfort Layer

The comfort layer is 5.25″ thick and made of three layers of foam, as shown below.

Directly below the pillow top cover is a 1.0″ copper-infused memory foam (yellow + orange speckled foam). This material is great for cooling as the copper helps to disperse heat build up.

Below the copper memory foam is a 1.5″ poly foam (grey foam), which is great for pressure relief and continued cooling.

The bottom foam within the comfort layer is a 1.0″ poly foam (green foam). This layer serves as a transitional layer between the memory foam comfort materials and the support layer below.

The Support Layer

The support layer is 8.75″ thick and made of 8.0″ pocketed coils. Each coil is individually encased in a thin fabric, which allows the coils to each move independently of each other.
