Our Verdict
The Beautyrest 12″ Silver BRS900 mattress is a 12″ coil mattress that features a small poly foam top layer followed by a traditional innerspring coil unit for the support.
It has deep sinkage and very high bounce, giving the mattress a really deep and engaging feel.
This mattress comes in a single firmness, 6 out of 10, and has a medium-firm feel.
In our performance tests, the Beautyrest Silver maintained below-average performance for cooling, motion transfer, and pressure relief.
What it lacks in performance, it may make up for with the low price—only $649 for a queen. That said, performance is also significantly below the average based on all other mattresses we’ve tested to date.

How is Beautyrest Silver Different?
The Beautyrest Silver is a 12″ coil mattress with notably below-average performance and also a below-average price tag (41% less than the average coil mattress).
Advantages
Aside from the price alone, other advantages to the Beautyrest Silver include fast material response time, better-than-average edge support, and a better sex score.
The mattress is also bagged instead of compressed into a box, which gives it less of an odor upon arrival.
Neutral Factors
This mattress has deep sinkage and very high levels of bounce. Both of these factors are considered neutral as their pro/con nature tends to depend on a sleeper’s personal preference.
Disadvantages
Disadvantages of the Beautyrest Silver include moderate levels of heat retention, very high levels of motion transfer (nearly 2X the average), as well poor pressure relief.

Cooling Test
The Beautyrest Silver has a good level of cooling performance. However, it doesn’t rise to the “excellent” or “outstanding” level. During our tests, I felt a slight degree of heat retention around my body.
Baseline Temp.
81.1° F
Max Temp.
90.8° F
Ending Temp.
84.3° F
On the positive side, this is a more traditional coil-style mattress without much foam. We have a limited 2.0” comfort layer on top of an 8.0” pocketed coil unit. The thinner foam layer limits the amount of material that is more capable of absorbing heat.
In addition, the innerspring unit is also increasing airflow. That said, the foam layers look and feel low quality. Those lower-quality foams are more able to absorb and retain heat compared to high-performance foams.
Max Temp.

Ending Temp

- Baseline Temperature – the temperature of the mattress before anyone lies on it
- Maximum Temperature (0 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after lying on it for 15 minutes
- Ending Temperature (5 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after being lied upon and having no one on it for 5 minutes
In our objective temperature tests, we measured a max surface level temperature of 90.8° F. This is 1.1° warmer than the average of 89.7°.
After getting off the mattress the temperature declined by 4.5° from minutes 0 to 1, which is 0.2° warmer than average.
The temperature decline from minutes 0 to 5 was 6.5°, which is 0.8° warmer than average.
Heat Dissipation Over Time

According to Beautyrest, the mattress uses “DualCool Fabric” that is designed to “move both heat and moisture away from the surface of the mattress”. Given our subjective experience and objective testing data, I just don’t feel like that is accurate. Or if it is doing what Beautyrest says, it isn’t doing it very well.
Sinkage Test
The Beautyrest Silver has a deep level of sinkage. In our pressure point sinkage tests, we measured a sinkage depth of 2.34”. This is 0.19” more sinkage than the average of 2.15”.
Sinkage Depth
2.34″
Sinkage Feel
Deep
The mattress has a traditional coil-type feel and lacks any type of overly dramatic body contouring hug that is more common among hybrid, memory foam, and foam mattresses.
The level of sinkage is documented in the image below.

Because there is only 3.0” of comfort foam and 2” of those inches are the quilted cover, you more easily sink through the comfort layer and definitely can feel the spring layer on your body.
As a result, sleepers will really need to like the feel of a more traditional coil mattress to be comfortable on the Beautyrest Silver.
Motion Transfer Test
The Beautyrest Silver has an extremely high level of motion transfer. In our tests, we measured a total acceleration range of 16.82 m/s². This is 91% more motion than the average of 8.81 m/s².
Max. Acceleration
7.25 m/s²
Min. Acceleration
-9.57 m/s²
Accel. Range
16.82 m/s²
The high level of motion transfer isn’t surprising. The mattress has limited foam, foam is lower quality, there’s no memory foam, and the coil unit is lower spec. All of these factors are contributing to the higher level of motion.
The level of motion transfer is also documented in the video below.
In our motion transfer chart, which visualizes our accelerometer data we can see the highest motion spike from 0 to 0.15 seconds.
There is a significant secondary spike from 0.52 to 1.05 seconds and it’s not until 1.35 seconds that we return to near-zero levels of energy.

There can be no sugarcoating this issue. Motion is extremely high and motion duration is extremely long. The Beautyrest Silver is in the bottom 3% for motion transfer among all mattresses we’ve tested to date.
Response Test
The Beautyrest Silver has a very fast material responsiveness. In our mostly recovered test, we measured an extremely fast recovery speed of 0.2 seconds.
Mostly Recovered
0.2 sec.
Complete Recovery
0.7 sec.
This is 0.21 seconds faster than the average of 0.41 seconds. In our fully recovered test, we measured a fast recovery speed of 0.7 seconds. This is 0.18 seconds faster than the average of 0.88 seconds.
The mattress uses a thin comfort layer, more responsive poly foam as opposed to memory foam, and a more traditional coil design.
The level of responsiveness is documented in the video below.
All of these factors help increase the material responsiveness. The fast response ensures the mattress will never leave sleepers feeling stuck and keeps the mattress easy to move around on.
Bounce Test
The Beautyrest Silver has a very high level of bounce. In our tests, we measured a total bounce range of 12.96”. This is 3.23” more bounce than the average of 9.73”.
Max. Depth
5.31″
Max. Rebound
7.65″
Total Bounce
12.96″
Max. Sinkage Depth

Max Bounce Height

The high bounce can be attributed to the basic design and material choices of the mattress. These same choices also significantly impact cooling, motion transfer, and material response.
The mattress has a fairly thin comfort layer, the foams are less dense, and the foam quality is lower quality. All of these factors allow sleeper bodies to come into more direct contact with the coil layer, which is going to return higher levels of bounce.
The level of bounce is also documented in the video below.
The high bounce is the primary reason for the high level of motion transfer. However, it also gives the mattress a more traditional feel and greatly improves sex performance. So there are pros and cons to bounce at this level.
Edge Support Test
The Beautyrest Silver has outstanding sitting edge support and good lying edge support.
Max Sinkage
2.75″
Lying Support
Good
In our sitting edge support test, we measured a sitting sinkage compression of 2.75”. This is 1.30” less sitting sinkage than the average of 4.05”. Even when sitting directly on the edge of the mattress the Silver creates ample support.
The level of edge support while seated is documented in the images below.
Sitting, 140 lbs.

Sitting, 200 lbs.

Lying edge support was nearly as good. While lying on the edge of the mattress I felt well supported in all sleeping positions. Edge support is one of the real bright spots for the Beautyrest Silver.
The level of edge support while lying is documented in the images below.
Lying on Edge, 140 lbs.

Lying on Edge, 200 lbs.

The mattress is wrapped in a perimeter-encasing edge support foam. That edge support layer is 8.0” tall and 4.0” wide, which is incredibly robust, even when compared to much higher-end mattresses.
This edge support layer is having a significant impact on both sitting and lying edge support.
While I am thrilled to see this layer in such an affordable mattress, I cannot help but wish they had done without this layer or reduced its quality to have more budget to improve other material and design aspects of the mattress that feel notably lacking.
Sex Test
The Beautyrest Silver has excellent sex performance. The mattress excels in terms of bounce and edge support, both areas that are critical for great mattress sex performance.
The 12.96” of bounce is in the top 13% of all mattresses we’ve tested to date. In addition, the 2.75” of sitting edge sinkage ranks it in the top 9% of all mattresses tested to date.
Sex Factor | Factor Weight | Score | Rating |
---|---|---|---|
Bounce | 65% | 10 | Extremely High |
Edge Support | 20% | 10 | Outstanding |
Noise | 5% | 8.0 | Moderate |
Pressure Relief | 5% | 7.0 | Fair |
Cooling | 5% | 8.0 | Good |
Noise is good, albeit, not perfect. Similarly, pressure relief and cooling both are fine, but leave something to be desired.
Nevertheless, the fantastic performance from bounce and edge support helped to earn the mattress a fantastic sex performance score. For amorous activities, the Beauryteset Silver takes home the gold.

Pressure Relief Test
The Beautyrest Silver has a fair level of pressure relief. During our tests, I felt a moderate level of pressure on my body.
Comfort Layer
3.0″
Support Layer
9.0″
The Beautyrest has a limited comfort layer of just 3.0”. In some cases, 3.0” can be sufficiently thick enough. However, the foam types and foam quality here just don’t create much comfort pushback.
As a result, sleeper bodies easily sink through the comfort layers, which creates significant pressure points as the body comes into greater contact with the coil layer.
Heavier-weighted bodies are more likely to experience greater pressure point issues, as those bodies will sink deeper into the mattress and create greater pressure with the coil unit.
Overall, I am really unimpressed with the comfort materials. The quilted cover is stuffed with what appears to be a basic polyester fiber batting.
Next up, we have a 1.0” poly foam layer, which again, looks and feels extremely basic. Neither of these comfort layers gives me much confidence with respect to performance or longevity.

Off-Gassing Test
Off-gassing is moderate out of the box and the smell lasts for 5 days.
Initial Smell Strength
Moderate
Off-Gassing Period
5 days
The mattress isn’t boxed, but it is bagged. That plastic bag enclosure prevented some of the smell from fully disappointing before opening up.
Nevertheless, it was still just a moderate smell and it was gone quicker than the average off-gassing duration (6 days).
Company
The Beautyrest 12″ Silver BRS900 appears to only be sold at Costco. As a result, we’re using Costco’s policies for trial, returns and warranty to determine the company score.
Company Factor | Factor Weight | Score | Data |
---|---|---|---|
Trial Period | 15% | 10 | 365 nights |
Warranty | 10% | 8.0 | 10 years |
Shipping | 5% | 10 | $0 |
Returns | 20% | 10 | $0 |
Trust | 50% | 8.0 | Good |
Country of Origin | 0% | USA |
Costco’s warranty is 10 years and their return / refund policy is fantastic, essentially allowing you to return the mattress at any time for 100% money back. Lastly, shipping is free.

How firm is Beautyrest Silver?
The Beautyrest Silver has a medium-firm feel, with a firmness level of 6 out of 10 (where 10 is the most firm).

This gives the mattress a medium-firm feel, the most popular firmness and widely accepted by a range of sleeper preferences.
Support & Sleeping Positions
The Beautyrest Silver has a fair level of support. During our tests, I felt well-supported. However, I also felt notable pressure points.
It is the pressure points that complicate the support dynamic on the mattress. For a mattress to be supportive, it needs to keep the spine in alignment, but it also needs to be comfortable for sleepers.
The limited comfort layer thickness, material types used within the comfort layer, and relative quality of the comfort layer materials are all contributing to a lack of pressure relief.
This lack of pressure relief creates pressure point issues on the body, as sleepers are coming into significant contact with the support foam layers.
Check out the table below to see the sleeper weights and sleeping positions that would be best suited for this mattress.
Sleeper Weight | Stomach Sleepers | Side Sleepers | Back Sleepers |
---|---|---|---|
Under 150 lbs. | Yes | Yes | Yes |
150-250 lbs. | Maybe | Maybe | Maybe |
250-300 lbs. | No | No | No |
Some lighter-weighted bodies may find the comfort layer is sufficiently good enough to find both comfort and support. However, more moderate-weighted bodies and heavier-weighted bodies are more likely to sink further down into the mattress and feel more of the coil layer.
It’s this type of support dynamic that greatly concerns me. For this reason, I find that the Beautyrest Silver has a fair level of support at best.

The Cover
The Beautyrest Silver has a simple, tufted cover with a gray and white design. It is soft and sits taut against the surface of the mattress.

The loft of this cover is created with a 2.0″ polyester fiber batting, giving it a plush feel and contributing to the mattress’s deep sinkage.
The Comfort Layer
The comfort layer is a simple 1.0″ poly foam, quite a bit thinner than other comfort layers we’ve seen, but not uncommon for traditional coil mattresses.

The Support Layer
The support layer is an 8.0″ pocketed coil system that contains hundreds of individual coils. Each coil can move independently, which helps to limit motion transfer and improve pressure relief (compared to traditional coil mattresses).

A 1.0″ slab of blended textile fiber batting sits at the bottom of the mattress and provides a balanced place for the coils to sit.
Product Evolution
The Beautyrest Silver BRS900 joined the Costco lineup in 2023 and there have been no notable changes since its release.
It appears that this mattress may have been a part of the Beautyrest collection for a longer time. That said, the exact release date is unclear.
