Best For
- Good pressure relief with high-profile design (13.75″ thick)
- Excellent edge support for sitting or lying
- High-profile design, 13.75″, which is quite a bit thicker than average (12.2″)
Considerations
- Higher cost than average—25% more expensive than the average memory foam hybrid
- Only available at Costco other other limited retailers
- Not ideal for couples—lower sex score and higher levels of motion transfer
Our Verdict
The Beautyrest Black Hybrid LX Class is a 13.75″ memory foam hybrid mattress made of memory foam, pocketed coils, and a support foam base. This specific model is a sold at Costco (and a few other limited retailers) and has worse overall performance than the Beautyrest Black or Beautyrest Black Hybrid we have previously tested. But it is also hitting a much lower price tag than these other models, so there are pros and cons to consider.
The Beautyrest Black Hybrid LX Class is available in a single firmness level — medium-firm. This is a 6 out of 10 on our firmness tests. For many sleepers, this is a balanced firmness that hits a nice balance of softness and support.
This mattress has moderate sinkage and very low levels of bounce. The memory foam comfort layer keeps the bounce level low, while the coils provide support.
In our performance tests, this mattress earned an overall score of 8.46, ranking the mattress in the bottom 37% of all mattresses tested to date. If we look exclusively at memory foam hybrids, that rank drops even lower to the bottom 15% of mattresses.
The Beautyrest Black Hybrid LX Class is $2,100 for a queen-sized mattress, which is 26% more expensive than the average memory foam hybrid. If you’re looking for a Beautyrest on a budget, this could be a good option, taht said, we’ve tested higher-performing memory foam hybrids at lower prices than what we see here.

How is Beautyrest Black Hybrid LX Class Different?
The Beautyrest Black Hybrid LX Class is a 13.75″ memory foam hybrid mattress with an overall performance level that is below average and a price that is above average (25% more expensive than the average memory foam hybrid).
Advantages
Advantages of the Beautyrest Black Hybrid LX Class include better edge support than average, both for sitting and lying, as well as better pressure relief. This mattress has an overall mattress thickness of 13.75″ (12.22″ is average) and a thicker than average comfort layer as well, 4.75″ (4.32″ is average).
If you’re specifically looking for a mattress at Costco, that could be an advantage also, but as we’ll discuss below, Costco models have their disadvantages as well.

Neutral Factors
This mattress has moderate sinkage and very low levels of bounce. These factors are considered “neutral” since different sleepers will likely have different opinions on these factors.
The Beautyrest Black is within reasonable levels for both of these categories, and the feel was as expected for a memory foam hybrid.
Disadvantages
The Beautyrest Black scored below average in many different categories including: worse cooling performance, higher levels of motion transfer, slower material responsiveness, and a lower sex score.
Cooling Test
The Beautyrest Black Hybrid LX Class has good cooling. During our tests, I felt a slight level of heat retention; however, it was nothing extreme.
Baseline Temp.
76.4° F
Max. Temp.
91.7° F
Ending Temp.
82.6° F
This mattress has a hybrid design, which means we have layers of foam on top of a coil unit. The coil unit helps to bring ample airflow into the mattress. That said, we also have a substantial 4.75” thick comfort layer.
All of that extra comfort material is great for pressure relief and comfort, but can also inhibit cooling. 3.0” of the comfort material is memory foam.
Memory foam typically retains more heat compared to poly foam and other types of foam and I believe it’s part of the reason that this mattress has good, but not great cooling performance.
Max. Temp.

Ending Temp.

- Baseline Temperature – the temperature of the mattress before anyone lies on it
- Maximum Temperature (0 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after lying on it for 15 minutes
- Ending Temperature (5 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after being lied upon and having no one on it for 5 minutes
In our objective temperature tests, we measured a max surface level temperature of 91.7° F. This is 1.7° warmer than the average of 90.0° F, based on all of our tests to date.
After getting off the mattress, the temperature declined by 6.4 degrees from minutes 0 to 1, which is 1.6 degrees cooler than the average 0 to 1 minute decline of 4.8 degrees.
Heat Dissipation Over Time

When we consider the combination of objective data, my subjective experiences, and an analysis of the materials, I’m confident in my view that cooling is good.
Sinkage Test
The Beautyrest Black Hybrid LX Class has moderate sinkage. During our tests, we measured a pressure point sinkage depth of 2.03″. This is 0.21″ less sinkage than the average sinkage depth of 2.24″, based on all of our tests to date.
Sinkage Depth
2.03″
Sinkage Feel
Moderate
Body Contour
Dramatic
The level of sinkage is documented in the image below.

The mattress creates a dramatic body contouring hug. This mattress is equipped with a thicker-than-average 4.75” comfort layer, including 3.0” of memory foam.
Those memory foam layers create a classic memory foam feel with lots of hug. The foams conform to the precise shape of your body. This is neither good nor bad, but it is a specific feel. You’ll really need to love the feel of memory foam to be comfortable on this mattress.
Motion Transfer Test
The Beautyrest Black Hybrid LX Class has a moderate level of motion transfer. During our tests, we measured a total acceleration range of 9.57 m/s². This is 9% more motion transfer than the average of 8.77 m/s².
Accel. Range
9.57 m/s²
Motion Duration
0.92 seconds
This level of motion transfer is typical for a memory foam hybrid. The 3.0” memory foam layer does a great job of absorbing and dispersing energy. However, we still have the coil unit returning more energy.
The coil unit, in combination with the taut cover, which tugs back and forth slightly during motion generating events, is enough to push the total level of motion intensity slightly above average.
The level of motion transfer is also documented in the video below.
In our motion transfer chart, which visualizes our accelerometer data, we can see the highest motion peaks from 0 to 0.2 seconds.
Motion drops significantly thereafter. By 0.92 seconds, we’ve returned to near-zero levels of energy, which is 0.04 seconds longer than the average motion duration of 0.88 seconds.
Motion Transfer Over Time

Overall, motion transfer is pretty good. Is it perfect? Certainly not, as we do see longer than average motion duration and higher motion transfer intensity, and yet, both of these are only slightly worse than average.
Response Test
The Beautyrest Black Hybrid LX Class has a fast mostly recovered response time and a moderate fully recovered response time.
Mostly Recovered
0.4 sec.
Fully Recovered
1.0 sec.
In our mostly recovered test, we measured a recovery speed of 0.4 seconds, which is 0.01 seconds faster than the average of 0.41 seconds, based on all of our tests to date.
In our fully recovered responsiveness test, we measured a recovery speed of 1.0 seconds, which is 0.01 seconds faster than the average of 1.01 seconds.
These times are essentially average, which for most sleepers will be more than sufficient. Faster material recovery speeds help to prevent any type of a “stuck” feeling and make it easier to move around on the mattress.
The level of responsiveness is documented in the video below.
While the memory foam layers within the mattress don’t rebound back to shape instantly, they aren’t as slow as many other types of memory foam we’ve tested.
Overall, I’m pleased with this level of material response and expect it will be satisfactory for most sleepers.
Bounce Test
The Beautyrest Black Hybrid LX Class has a very low level of bounce. During our tests, we measured a total bounce height of 5.36″. This is 3.38″ less bounce than the average of 8.74″, based on all of our tests to date.
Max. Depth
4.79″
Max. Rebound
0.57″
Total Bounce
5.36″
The combination of a thicker-than-average 4.75” comfort layer that also includes 3.0” of memory foam works together to greatly reduce the level of bounce.
Max. Sinkage Depth

Max. Bounce Height

The level of bounce is also documented in the video below.
The lower level of bounce is a major reason why motion transfer was kept to a more reasonable level. However, a lower bounce level also makes sex performance worse. As a result, there are pros and cons to consider with bounce.
Edge Support Test
The Beautyrest Black Hybrid LX Class has outstanding sitting edge support and excellent lying edge support.
Max. Sinkage
2.25″
Lying Support
Excellent
Reinforced Edge
Yes
In our sitting edge support test, we measured a sitting sinkage compression of 2.25″. This is 1.67″ less sitting sinkage than the average of 3.92″, based on all of our tests to date.
The level of edge support while seated is documented in the images below.
Sitting, 140 lbs.

Sitting, 200 lbs.

While lying directly on the edge of the mattress, I felt that the support was excellent in all sleeping positions. This mattress is equipped with a reinforced support foam that runs along the entire perimeter of the mattress.
The level of edge support while lying is documented in the images below.
Lying on Edge, 140 lbs.

Lying on Edge, 200 lbs.

The combination of reinforced edge foam with a thicker-than-average total mattress height, moderate sinkage depth, medium-firm feel, and high-quality materials is all working together to deliver excellent edge support.
Sex Test
The Beautyrest Black Hybrid LX Class has fair sex performance. On the positive side, noise is minimal and the sitting edge support is outstanding.
With just 2.25” of sitting edge sinkage, the edge of the mattress is incredibly robust. A more supportive edge extends the usable surface area of the mattress and is beneficial for sex.

Moving on, pressure relief earned an excellent score, while cooling is also good. The only area where we see a struggle is bounce, which we measured at 5.36”. When it comes to sex, more bounce is almost always better.
At 5.36” of total bounce, the Beautyrest Black has considerably less bounce than average, and that lack of bounce makes it more tiring and strenuous to have sex on this mattress.
| Sex Factor | Factor Weight | Score | Rating |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bounce | 65% | 5.8 | Very Low |
| Edge Support | 20% | 10 | Outstanding |
| Noise | 5% | 10 | Minimal |
| Pressure Relief | 5% | 9.0 | Excellent |
| Cooling | 5% | 8.0 | Good |
All that to say, the total sex performance leaves much to be desired and this performance level is significantly worse than average.
Pressure Relief Test
The Beautyrest Black Hybrid LX Class has an excellent level of pressure relief. During our tests, I felt no significant pressure points on my body.
Comfort Layer
4.75″
Support Layer
9.00″
The mattress is equipped with 4.75″ of comfort material, which is 0.46″ more comfort material than the average comfort layer thickness of 4.29″, based on all of our tests to date.
In all mattress reviews at NapLab, we make it a point to cut the mattress open to examine the material quality.

Overall, I’m pleased with what I see. The foams look and feel high quality, both on the body and in-hand. While Beautyrest does not disclose the exact foam density levels, we can infer they are fairly dense by the total weight of the mattress coming in at 156 pounds.
In general, heavier mattresses perform better and last longer than lighter mattresses. At 156 pounds, this is well within the ideal weight range.
Pressure Map – Side Sleepers

| Pressure Relief (PSI) | Average | Maximum |
|---|---|---|
| Side Sleepers | 0.10 | 0.50 |
Pressure Map – Back Sleepers

| Pressure Relief (PSI) | Average | Maximum |

| Back Sleepers | 0.07 | 0.48 |
Pressure Map – Stomach Sleepers

| Pressure Relief (PSI) | Average | Maximum |
|---|---|---|
| Stomach Sleepers | 0.07 | 0.60 |
In our objective pressure mapping tests, we measured a max PSI of 0.60. This is well within the 1.0 PSI threshold that I want to see.
When I consider our objective pressure mapping tests, material thickness, material quality, and my subjective experience on the mattress, I’m confident most sleepers will find the pressure relief to be excellent.
Off-Gassing Test
The Beautyrest Black Hybrid LX Class had a strong smell upon the initial arrival. The mattress smelled for 7 days. This is 0.3 days shorter than the average smell duration of 7.3 days.

Company
The Beautyrest Black Hybrid LX Class mattress is sold at Costco and a handful of other limited retailers. We purchased the mattress from Costco, so that’s who will be using to determine the following scoring factors.
Shipping and returns are both free, and the mattress is backed by a 10-year warranty.
| Company Factor | Factor Weight | Score | Data |
|---|---|---|---|
| Returns | 40% | 10 | $0 |
| Trial Period | 30% | 10 | 365 nights |
| Warranty | 20% | 8.0 | 10 years |
| Shipping | 10% | 10 | $0 |
| Country of Origin | 0% | USA |
Comparing 107+ brands tested to date, the average trial period is 170 nights.
While Costco does not have a traditional trial period, they offer a generous return policy that effectively serves the same function.

Regarding the warranty, the average warranty is 13 years, which is 3 years more than this mattress, and that’s if we exclude the 41% of mattresses that offer lifetime warranties.
How firm is Beautyrest Black Hybrid LX Class?
The Beautyrest Black Hybrid LX Class is available in a single firmness, 6 out of 10, which gives the mattress a medium-firm feel.

Beautyrest rates this as a “medium” feel. However, I don’t think it’s that soft. This is a fairly typical medium-firm feel, in my view.
Support & Sleeping Positions
Support on the Beautyrest Black Hybrid LX Class is excellent. During our tests, I felt well supported in all sleeping positions. The mattress is equipped with a 9.0″ support layer. This is 1.08″ thicker than the average support layer thickness of 7.92″, based on all of our tests to date.
| Support Factor | Data |
|---|---|
| Comfort Layer | 4.75″ |
| Support Layer | 9.00″ |
| Firmness | Medium-Firm |
| Body Contour | Dramatic |
| Zoned Support | Yes |
| Reinforced Edge | Yes |
For a mattress to create ideal support it must fully support the body, creating a neutral spinal alignment, while also creating sufficient comfort and pressure relief.
The Beautyrest Black achieves both of those requirements without issue. In addition, this mattress has a medium-firm feel, 6 out of 10 firmness. This firmness level meets the needs of most sleepers and body types.
Moving on, this mattress is equipped with zoned support. It uses firmer coils in the lumbar area, which creates extra support and helps to better keep the spine in alignment, reducing sagging and reducing body impressions.

All of that said, I think the most important support factor on this mattress is simply the 3.0” of memory foam. Memory foam creates a more dramatic hug and exacting contour around the body.
This isn’t good or bad, but it is a specific feel. To feel well supported by this mattress, you’ll want to prefer the feel of memory foam.
Check out the table below to see the sleeper weights and sleeping positions that would be best suited for this mattress.

|---|---|---|---|
| Under 150 lbs. | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| 150-250 lbs. | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| 250-300 lbs. | Yes | Yes | Yes |
Based on all of my tests to date, an analysis of the materials, and my subjective experiences, I’m confident that most sleepers will find support on the Beautyrest Black Hybrid LX Class excellent.

The Cover
The Beautyrest Black Hybrid LX Class has a 1.75″ quilted cover. This is half the thickness of the plush 3.0″ cover we saw on the Beautyrest Black, but slightly thicker than what we saw on the Beautyrest Black Hybrid.

The Comfort Layer
The comfort layer is 4.75″ thick and made of two layers of memory foam, each 1.5″ thick. These two layers combine with the 0.75″ cover to create a total comfort thickness of 4.75″.

The average comfort layer is only 4.32″, so the Beautyrest does provide more comfort material than average.
The Support Layer
The support layer is 9.00″ thick and made of 8.0″ pocketed coils and a 1.0″ support foam base. For a quality hybrid, this support design is pretty standard.

Product Evolution
The Beautyrest Black collection was originally launched in 2006, but it has seen many iterations or expansions. To date, NapLab has tested three models within the Beautyrest Black collection.
- Beautyrest Black
- Beautyrest Black Hybrid
- Beautyrest Black Hybrid LX Class (Costco-exclusive; this review)
Among these three, the Black Hybrid LX Class has the lowest price, but also the lowest overall performance.
The LX Class model was launched at Costco (and a handful of other limited retailers) and added to the collection in 2022. Since its release, there have been no major changes made to the mattress. We tested this mattress in 2026.
