Our Verdict

Nectar is a classic name in the online mattress space that specializes in memory foam, hybrids, and memory foam hybrids.

When it comes to firmness, Nectar mattresses have a firmness range between 4 and 6, soft to medium-firm. These are the most popular options and are suitable for the widest range of sleepers. While they offer a soft mattress, they don’t have a particularly firm option.

In our tests, the entire Nectar lineup earned a performance score of 8.70. This is a notch above the average score of 8.53. As for price, an average queen-size Nectar model costs $1,243, which is 7% less expensive than the average mattress we’ve tested to date.

On the whole, Nectar is an extremely affordable brand that offers fantastic performance for each price tier. And each tier has an all-foam option as well as a hybrid option. Let’s break down how their price tiers work:

The Classic Collection represents the most affordable options from the brand, starting at $699 for a queen-size mattress, and they maintain solid performance for pressure relief, cooling, and motion transfer.

The Premier Collection is the best value for most sleepers. At $1,099 to $1,199, the premier models strike a fantastic balance between our 8 performance categories for an affordable price.

The Luxe Collection starts providing a true luxury feel with models as thick as 14.5″. For either $1,499 or $1,599, sleepers get more memory foam, extra cooling fibers, and top-tier pressure relief.

The Ultra Collection includes the thickest, most luxurious sleeping experience from Nectar, but it comes with a few trade-offs, like a less lively surface that’s not as good for sex. It’s also the most expensive, topping off at $2,199 for a queen.

Which Mattress Should You Buy?

The mattresses earning the title for “best overall” from each brand have the highest overall performance. Overall performance is determined by scores from 8 different categories, including cooling, motion transfer, response time, edge support, sex performance, pressure relief, off-gassing, and company.

Sinkage and bounce are also taken into consideration, but they are not direct scoring factors.

Among the Nectar mattresses, the top recommendation is the Nectar Ultra. This only considers all-foam models. If we also consider Nectar hybrids, the top pick is actually the Nectar Ultra Hybrid, a similar design to the Nectar Ultra but with a pocketed coil base.

The Nectar Ultra is a 15″ memory foam mattress with a 4″ memory foam layer, 2″ poly foam layer, and an 8″ support foam base. It has a medium feel with extremely deep sinkage and extremely low bounce. Its 8.81 score ranks it among the top 35% of all mattresses, with a price of $1,799 that’s 67% more expensive than the average memory foam. For a high-profile design with exceptional cooling and pressure relief, the Nectar Ultra is our top pick.

Firmness

Looking at all available mattresses we’ve tested, Nectar ranges in firmness from 4 to 6 out of 10.

Most Nectar mattresses have a medium to medium-firm feel, and this should be suitable for the vast majority of sleepers. They also offer a soft mattress option, with the Nectar Ultra Hybrid. They do not make a firm mattress.

Check the table below to see the details of each mattress.

Not sure which firmness you need? Your ideal mattress firmness depends on two major factors—sleeping position and body weight. With the right firmness, your body and spine will maintain proper alignment when sleeping.

Lightweight sleepers or those who sleep on their side tend to need a softer mattress. By comparison, heavier sleepers or those who sleep on their back or stomach tend to need more support and a firmer feel.

Cooling Test

Nectar mattresses use a modern memory foam that includes a number of cooling material infusions, depending on the model.

These design choices culminate in an average cooling score of 9.3 across Nectar’s four foam models. This is a fantastic score, especially considering no one mattress is lower than a 9.0.

Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding cooling.

Cooling TestScoreBaselineMax. Temp.Ending Temp.
Nectar Classic9.076.5°88.3°80.5°
Nectar Premier9.076.1°88.6°80.7°
Nectar Luxe9.075.4°87.1°81.4°
Nectar Ultra1075.5°85.8°77.3°
  • Baseline Temperature – the temperature of the mattress before anyone lies on it
  • Maximum Temperature (0 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after lying on it for 15 minutes
  • Ending Temperature (after 5 minutes) – the temperature of the mattress after being lied upon and having no one on it for 5 minutes

Below, you can watch a video of how the heat dissipates on each mattress during our cooling test. For this test, we lie on the mattress for 15 minutes, get off the mattress, and then take periodic surface-level temperature measurements.

Nectar Classic

Nectar Ultra

Nectar Premier

Nectar Luxe

The average cooling score across all mattresses tested to date is 8.6. By this measure, even Nectar’s Classic model is above average, and that is available for only $649 for a queen.

Every tier level includes some level of cooling fabric sewn into its knit cover. The first upgrade, the Nectar Premier, has 60% more, and the two higher tiers have 3 to 4x more. Of course, each model has more and more foam, especially memory foam, which increases the potential for heat buildup.

Nectar Luxe Uncovered 2
Nectar Luxe Uncovered

To further combat this, the Premier model and up use phase-change material, which is meant to draw heat away and provide a “cool-to-the-touch” feel. The final version of Nectar’s cooling tech includes copper in the cover to resist heat retention.

The Nectar Luxe mattress has the best cooling the company offers, earning a 10/10 in our test. Thick and soft, as it was, the mattress has an almost eerily cool feel to it, thanks to the design of its cooling cover.

Sinkage Test

Across Nectar’s full lineup, they offer the full range of sinkage measurements from minimal to extremely deep. It’s simple: the more money you pay, the more foam and more sinkage you get.

Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding sinkage.

Nectar Ultra

Nectar Ultra Sinkage Test

Nectar Premier

Nectar Premier Sinkage Test

Nectar Luxe

Nectar Luxe Sinkage Test

The average sinkage depth across all mattresses tested to date is 2.21″.

Back and stomach sleepers usually prefer less sinkage, which better maintains proper alignment of their spine. The Nectar Classic and Nectar Premier would both be the best choices for those who prefer back or stomach sleeping. Lightweight sleepers may also prefer the Premier, as lighter bodies don’t need as much material to sink down into.

Generally, side sleepers enjoy a deeper level of sinkage, as that typically translates to better pressure relief and contour. While I find all of the foam Nectar models to be more than adequate for side sleeping, the absolute best side sleeping experience will be had on the Nectar Luxe or Nectar Ultra.

As memory foam is the topmost, prominent material in these mattresses, they will provide a dramatic contour and hug around your body. The greater the sinkage, the more intense this sensation will be.

Motion Transfer Test

When it comes to motion transfer, Nectar foam mattresses aren’t quite as good as we would have expected, but they are better than most mattresses, on average.

Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding motion transfer.

Motion Transfer TestScoreAcc. Range

The level of motion transfer on each mattress is also documented in the videos below.

Nectar Classic

Nectar Ultra

Nectar Premier

Nectar Luxe

The average motion transfer score across all mattresses tested to date is 8.2.

The Nectar Classic and Nectar Premier both fall a little short of this average score. These models lack the thicker comfort layers of the higher tiers, especially the memory foam layer.

Memory foam is an effective material when it comes to absorbing energy. When we get up to 3 and 4″ of memory foam, seen on the Nectar Luxe and Nectar Ultra models, we see exceptionally low levels of motion transfer.

If you or your partner are sensitive to movements disturbing your sleep, then the extra money to upgrade to the Luxe or Ultra is your best bet.

Response Test

Response time is a performance metric that many memory foam mattresses struggle with, and the Nectar foam models are not an exception.

Across its price tiers, the Nectar foam models averaged a response time score of 7.4, with the lowest at 5.6 and the highest at 8.8.

Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding response.

The level of responsiveness for each mattress is documented in the videos below.

Nectar Classic

Nectar Ultra

Nectar Premier

Nectar Luxe

The average response score across all mattresses tested to date is 8.8. So, at best, the Nectar Premier is simply average, and it is the most responsive mattress among the brand’s foam models.

The Nectar Classic and Nectar Luxe have a noticeably slower feel, but are still in the realm of normal/acceptable.

Nectar Ultra Pressing Materials
Pressing On Nectar Ultra Foam

However, the Nectar Ultra has an intensely sluggish feel to it. Anybody familiar with classic memory foam will recognize this sort of cratering sensation, which makes it more difficult to shift positions and move around on.

This slow material response may be too much for some sleepers, but it can be an indicator of positive trade-offs, like better pressure relief. Before buying the Nectar Ultra, be sure you’re not going to be bothered by this slow response time.

Bounce Test

Next, let’s talk about bounce. Similar to sinkage, our bounce measurements follow the price tiers of each Nectar foam mattress. The least expensive tier has moderate bounce, and each tier trends lower and lower until there’s nearly no bounce at all.

Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding bounce.

Bounce TestBounce FeelBounce Height
Nectar ClassicModerate8.07″
Nectar PremierLow6.38″
Nectar LuxeVery Low5.37″
Nectar UltraExtremely Low3.85″

The level of bounce for each mattress is documented in the videos below.

Nectar Classic

Nectar Ultra

Nectar Premier

Nectar Luxe

The average bounce across all mattresses tested to date is 8.74″.

The Nectar Classic is the only foam Nectar model that we could say has any substantial bounce to it. At 8.07″, it’s less than average, but still within my ideal range for general movement.

As the price goes up and the more memory foam is added to each Nectar tier, the bounce reduces to 3.85″. In our tests, the ball does not rebound over the mattress once dropped, demonstrating the lack of pushback sleepers will get during any sort of movement.

If you like the feel of memory foam, this may not bother you. However, it’s fair to say that the Nectar foam mattresses do not have a lively feel that is easy to move around on.

Edge Support Test

The Nectar foam mattresses are a little worse than average when it comes to edge support. Unlike their hybrid counterparts, there is no separate, physical material to reinforce their edge. This is especially notable as you actually get worse edge support in the more expensive tiers.

Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding edge support.

Edge Support TestScoreSitting SinkageLying Support
Nectar Classic9.43.25″Excellent

The level of edge support is documented in the images below.

Nectar Classic

Nectar Classic Edge Support Test

Nectar Ultra

Nectar Ultra Edge Support Test

Nectar Premier

Nectar Premier Edge Support Test

Nectar Luxe

Nectar Luxe Edge Support Test

The average edge support score across all mattresses tested to date is 8.7. The 4 Nectar foam models averaged an edge support score of 8.1.

The Nectar Classic shines in both sitting and lying support at the edge, as its softer comfort layer is the thinnest among the brand. The support foam block beneath does a good job of supporting adult bodies.

The problem lies in the amount of softer memory foam that gets added in each tier of the Nectar mattress. As we saw with our sinkage measurements, compression only goes up with each tier. Except for the Nectar Ultra, which does a little better than the Luxe.

In the end, aside from the Nectar Classic, you’ll need to put up with a slightly worse mattress for both sitting and lying if you go with a foam Nectar model.

Sex Test

Our sex scores are derived using a weighted formula that includes bounce, edge support, noise, pressure relief, and cooling performance.

Because bounce and edge support are the highest rated factors of our test (making up 80% of it, in fact), it should be no surprise that the Nectar foam mattresses only get worse with every price tier.

Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding sex.

Sex TestSex ScoreBounceEdge SupportNoisePressure ReliefCooling
Nectar Classic8.27.59.7108.09.0
Nectar Premier7.26.57.8109.09.0
Nectar Luxe6.55.86.610109.0
Nectar Ultra6.45.08.1101010

The average sex score across all mattresses tested to date is 8.2.

The Nectar foam mattresses averaged a 7.1, putting it a solid notch below the typical mattress we test when it comes to sex performance. The Nectar Classic has the best sex score, as sleepers will have more bounce and more support during amorous activities.

All that said, the Nectar Premier, Nectar Luxe, and Nectar Ultra will not be a death sentence for your sex life. It’s simply that they aren’t as reliable to use at their sides and will require more energy from their lack of bounce.

Pressure Relief Test

For pressure relief, you get what you pay for, and even at the lowest, most affordable level, Nectar provides solid comfort and support.

The four Nectar foam mattresses have an average pressure relief score of 9.3, with the lowest score at 8.0. Far more expensive mattresses than the Nectar Classic have earned an 8.0, which is a solid score, if not below average.

Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding pressure relief.

Pressure Relief TestScoreComfort LayerSupport Layer
Nectar Classic8.04.00″7.50″
Nectar Premier9.05.50″7.50″
Nectar Luxe106.00″7.75″
Nectar Ultra107.00″8.00″

The average pressure relief score across all mattresses tested to date is 8.6.

This is where the Nectar Premier will probably be the best deal for many sleepers, as it achieves above-average, truly excellent pressure relief for only $949. It has 5.5″ of comfort material – that’s 2″ of memory foam, and 3″ of poly foam.

This tried-and-true design of memory foam, poly foam, and support foam has shown to be effective and economical across the mattress industry. The Nectar Premier specifically demonstrates the effectiveness of this design to create fantastic pressure relief.

However, for those who can afford over $1,000, the two more expensive Nectar models offer even greater luxury and top-tier pressure relief.

The materials included in each mattress are documented in the images below.

Bigger doesn’t always mean better, but the Nectar Luxe and Nectar Ultra demonstrate a clear performance boost with their added foam. In fact, the Nectar Ultra may be overkill for some sleepers.

If you’re searching for the greatest comfort in an all-foam Nectar mattress, go with the Nectar Luxe at only $1,249 for a queen.

Off-Gassing Test

Next, let’s talk about off-gassing – the intensity of the smell of a mattress right out of its box and the length of time it takes to dissipate.

Nectar mattresses are a little faster than average when it comes to off-gassing. But they are all strong upon their initial unboxing.

Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding off-gassing.

Off-Gassing TestScoreInitial SmellSmell Duration
Nectar Classic8.3Strong6 days
Nectar Premier8.9Strong4 days
Nectar Luxe9.2Strong3 days
Nectar Ultra8.6Strong5 days

The average smell duration across all mattresses tested to date is 6.8 days.

The Nectar Classic is the worst offender, but it’s still better than average. The Nectar Luxe seemed to hit the sweet spot in terms of smell duration, as it only smelled for 3 days during our tests.

For those sensitive to polyurethane odors, Nectar mattresses will definitely offend during the first few days. But after a week, they should all be ready for your sleeping enjoyment, and the smell will never come back.

Company

Finally, Nectar is a fantastic company for its consumer-friendly policies.

They offer a 365-night trial period, a lifetime warranty, free shipping, and free returns. Nectar also manufacture their mattresses in the USA.
