Our Verdict

Casper has grown from one of the original bed-in-the-box brands an image around providing exceptional value with a range of affordable mattresses, and they specialize in all-foam and hybrid models.

Casper mattresses range from soft (4.5) to firm (6), with at least two hybrids at each firmness level.

In our performance tests, Casper mattresses have an average performance score of 8.49, slightly lower than the average. They have all firmness levels at all price points, making Helix an attractive brand for sleepers at every budget level.

Casper offers prices that fit most budgets, with models as low as $799 and as high as $2,995 for a queen. While that lower end exists, the majority of their models leans on the pricier side. The average Casper mattress is $1,771 compared to the average mattress we’ve tested at $1,489.

Overall, our tests don’t support Casper mattresses as having the best value on the market, given their below-average performance and above-average price. However, there’s certainly a lot for sleepers to enjoy from standouts like the Casper Cloud One and the Casper Dream Max.

The Casper Dream Max is a 13.5″ hybrid mattress with 3 layers of poly foam on top of a coil pocketed coil unit and a thick support foam base. Casper adds features like zoned support and reinforced perimeter to their Max line. The Dream Max has a soft feel with deep sinkage and very high bounce. This all comes together to create an overall score of 8.73, which is among the top 43% tested to date. In our tests, it had excellent cooling, pressure relief, and sex scores, making it a great option for couples of all sleeping positions and most body weights.

Not sure which firmness you need? Your ideal mattress firmness depends on two major factors—sleeping position and body weight. With the right firmness, your body and spine will maintain proper alignment when sleeping.

Lightweight sleepers or those who sleep on their side tend to need a softer mattress. By comparison, heavier sleepers or those who sleep on their back or stomach tend to need more support and a firmer feel.

Cooling Test

When it comes to cooling, Casper knows how to make a breathable mattress that will keep you from overheating.

Across the six Casper mattresses, they earned an average cooling performance score of 9.17, with scores ranging from 8.0 to 10.

Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding cooling.

  • Maximum Temperature (0 minute) – the temperature of the mattress after lying on it for 15 minutes
  • Ending Temperature (after 5 minutes) – the temperature of the mattress after being lied upon and having no one on it for 5 minutes

Below, you can watch a video of how the heat dissipates on each mattress during our cooling test. For this test, we lie on the mattress for 15 minutes, get off the mattress, and then take periodic surface-level temperature measurements.

Casper Cloud One

Casper One

Casper Snow

Casper Dream

Casper Snow Max

The average cooling performance score across all mattresses tested to date is 8.6.

The Casper mattresses nearly all perform above this level. The one exception is the Casper One. This is an all-foam model without the benefit of pocketed coils or other cooling features seen in the other mattresses.

The Dream and Dream Max are both hybrids that include many of the extra design features that improve breathability.

Casper Snow Hybrid 2024 Spray Phase Change Coating
Casper Snow Hybrid 2024 Spray Phase Change Coating

However, the two Snow models (Casper Snow Hybrid and Snow Max) pull out all the stops to achieve top-tier cooling performance – copper ribbons that pull heat away from the top layers, cooling fibers in the cover that resist heat build-up, and phase change spray in the top foam layer.

The Casper Cloud One is a standout performer for its value. At $1,000, it performs better than the majority of mattresses we’ve tested to date.

Sinkage Test

Sinkage is a preferential factor, with some sleepers preferring more and others less. While we can’t compare scores, we can use these measurements to inform the type of feel each mattress offers.

Casper mattresses have an average sinkage depth of 2.32″, with models as minimal as 1.77″ and others as deep as 3.05″.

Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding sinkage.

Casper Snow Max Sinkage Test

The average sinkage depth across all mattresses tested to date is 2.23″.

Back and stomach sleepers usually prefer less sinkage, which better maintains proper alignment of their spine. The Casper One (1.77″) and Casper Dream (1.89″) both have less sinkage than average.

Generally, side sleepers enjoy a deeper level of sinkage, as that typically translates to better pressure relief and contour. For deeper sinkage, opt for the Casper Cloud One (2.46″), Casper Dream Max (2.41″), Casper Snow (2.36″), or Casper Snow Max (3.05″).

Motion Transfer Test

For our motion transfer tests, we drop a weighted ball on one side of the mattress and measure the amount of energy that reaches the other side. Based on our results, Casper mattresses are not particularly good when it comes to motion transfer, but they’re not bad either.

In our tests, the six Casper models earned an average motion transfer score of 8.2, with scores ranging from 7.4 to 9.0.

Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding motion transfer.

The level of motion transfer on each mattress is also documented in the videos below.

Casper Cloud One

Casper Dream Max

Casper One

Casper Snow

Casper Dream

Casper Snow Max

The average motion transfer score across all mattresses tested to date is 8.2.

The Casper Cloud One is the best Casper mattress when it comes to low motion transfer. However, the Casper Snow also earned an above-average score.

On paper, the Casper Dream Max and Casper Snow Max could have been fantastic, but that’s not what we measured in our tests. Softer mattresses can allow for greater sinkage, which also increases the pull towards the sinking object.

All in all, motion transfer is not one of Casper’s strongest performance categories, but they should be no worse than the average mattress either.

Response Test

For a response time, we measure the speed at which materials reform back to shape after removing a weighted ball. Faster responding materials aid in ease of movement and avoid that stuck feeling, most exemplified in memory foam.

Casper mattresses are exceptionally responsive, with two exceptions. These outliers bring the average response time score for Casper down to 8.3.

Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding response.

The level of responsiveness for each mattress is documented in the videos below.

Casper Cloud One

Casper Dream Max

Casper One

Casper Snow

Casper Dream

Casper Snow Max

The average response score across all mattresses tested to date is 8.8.

Four of the Casper models are well-above this score, and two are well-below it. The Casper One, Casper Cloud One, Casper Dream, and Casper Dream Max are all lightning quick and will never make you feel stuck when lying on them.

On the other hand, the Casper Snow and Casper Snow Max both scored horrendously slow in our tests. It’s clear that the memory foam used in their top layers is the culprit for poor response time performance.

In the end, it’s fair to say that Casper mattresses are extremely responsive and easy to move around on. That is, except the Snow models.

Bounce Test

Bounce is another preferential factor, and we measure it by combining the depth a weighted ball sinks down after being dropped onto the mattress with the rebound it has coming up.

Casper mattresses vary wildly in terms of bounce. On average, we measured 9.25″ of bounce across the six Casper models, with measurements as low as 6.13″ and as high as 12.73″.

Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding bounce.

Casper Dream

Casper Snow Max

The average bounce across all mattresses tested to date is 8.77″. My ideal range for general ease of movement is a bounce height somewhere between 8.00 – 12.00″. For amorous activities, my ideal range increases to 10.00 – 12.00″.

If a springy, lively surface is a priority to you, go for the Casper Dream or the Casper Dream Max. If you prefer that cozy, settled feeling from your mattress, go with the Casper Cloud One or Casper Snow Max.

Mattresses with more bounce are better for ease of movement and increase sex performance. However, higher bounce also typically results in greater motion transfer. So there are pros and cons when it comes to bounce.

Edge Support Test

For edge support, we measure the amount of edge compression while sitting at the edge as well as the support while lying at the edge.

This is another category where Casper doesn’t quite excel, nor does it underperform. On average, the Casper models earned an edge support score of 8.6, with scores ranging from 8.2 to 9.4.

Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding edge support.

Casper Snow Max Edge Support Test

The average edge support score across all mattresses tested to date is 8.7.

The Casper Snow has the best edge support, with a sitting compression of 3.25″ and excellent lying support. The Casper Dream, Casper Dream Max, and Casper Snow Max all include perimeter reinforced foam to strengthen support 4″ deep around the mattress.

Casper Dream Edge Support Side Sleeping
Casper Dream Edge Support Side Sleeping

The two Max models both have more foam and a softer feel, which explains their slightly below-average performance. Meanwhile, the two foam models (Casper One and Cloud One) don’t have any of the special reinforcement features.

Sex Test

When it comes to calculating sex performance, we use a weighted formula that factors bounce, edge support, noise, pressure relief, and cooling.

For sex, Casper mattresses include some models that are not so great, some that are average, and some that are excellent. On average, Casper has a sex score of 8.5, with a range of scores from 7.4 to 9.7.

Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding sex.

Sex TestSex ScoreBounceEdge SupportNoisePressure ReliefCooling
Casper Cloud One7.87.28.4109.09.0

Casper Dream Max9.7108.8109.09.0
Casper Snow8.98.59.7109.010
Casper Snow Max7.46.39.1101010

The average sex score across all mattresses tested to date is 8.2. By this measure, Casper mattresses are mostly better than average. Despite heavy use of foam, models like the Casper Dream Max have a lot of bounce, good edge support, extremely low noise, and excellent pressure relief and cooling.

However, the mattresses we identified earlier with low bounce are a massive disadvantage when it comes to sex. The Casper Snow Max, while the most expensive model, has the lowest sex score. This is a trade-off for the softer, thicker feel they provide for increased comfort.

Casper Snow Max Pressing On Foams
Casper Snow Max Memory Foams Compressed

The Casper Cloud One is another model that sleepers may notice the lack of bounce negatively impacting sex performance.

In the end, most Casper models won’t be a major hindrance to your love life, but they also won’t make things noticeably better either.

Pressure Relief Test

Now let’s talk about pressure relief, arguably the most important performance factor. Casper mattresses have a wide range of performance when it comes to pressure relief – some are exceptional, while others are problematic.

Casper mattresses earned an average pressure relief score of 8.5, with scores as low as 6.0 and as high as 10.

Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding pressure relief.

Pressure Relief TestScoreComfort LayerSupport Layer
Casper Cloud One9.04.50″6.00″

Casper Dream Max9.04.50″9.00″
Casper Snow9.03.00″8.50″
Casper Snow Max104.50″9.00″

The average pressure relief score across all mattresses tested to date is 8.6. Once again, Casper, as a brand, manages to score right around average. In this case, slightly under.

Their average score is strongly impacted by their cheapest mattress, the Casper One, which has a mediocre 6.0/10. This is another reason for those looking for affordable models to choose the Cloud One over the Casper One. At only $200 more, it’s definitely worth it, if only for its pressure relief performance.

Casper Cloud One Pressing Foams
Casper Cloud One Pressing Foams

The best pressure relief score we see from Casper is from their Snow Max. The quantity and quality of the foam are the best we see from the brand.

A feature of all Casper mattresses is their thin, knit covers that allow for more significant engagement with the foam layers, as opposed to mattresses with a patterned, quilted cover.

The materials included in each mattress are documented in the images below.

While bigger doesn’t always mean better, it certainly tracks with the top performers from Casper, with the exception of the Casper Snow. The Snow includes high-quality memory foams that can make up for a thinner comfort layer.

In the end, the Casper lineup includes excellent pressure relief performance at nearly all levels. Their cheapest model, the Cloud One, is one you can skip if pressure relief is a priority to you. All others should be suitable, especially if you splurge for their more expensive options.

Off-Gassing Test

For off-gassing, we assess the smell once we open the box/packaging and measure how many days it takes for a mattress to rid itself of any noticeable odors.

This is Casper’s worst performance category. Fortunately, it’s the lowest weighted one on our scorecard. Casper mattresses have an average off-gassing score of 5.6, with scores ranging from 4.4 to 7.8.

Check out the table below to see how each mattress compares regarding off-gassing.

Off-Gassing TestScoreInitial SmellSmell Duration

Casper One6.7Strong12 days
Casper Dream7.8Strong8 days
Casper Dream Max4.7Strong19 days
Casper Snow4.4Strong20 days
Casper Snow Max4.4Strong20 days

The average smell duration across all mattresses tested to date is 7.13 days.

Based on this average, no Casper mattresses are better than the average mattress we test. Something about their foam materials or manufacturing process is undoubtedly creating long-lasting smells.

Casper Snow Max Phase Change Paint
Casper Snow Max Phase Change Paint

The Casper Snow and Casper Snow Max models took the longest to complete off-gassing. While all of their mattresses had a strong smell as they initially were unboxed, these two were particularly pungent. This was largely due to the phase change spray material in the top foam layers.

If you’re sensitive to synthetic odors, Casper might not be the brand for you. At the very least, the Casper Dream had the shortest smell duration at 8 days, or you could place it in another room of your home to off-gas before sleeping on it.

Company

Finally, let’s discuss the brand at a high level, as it pertains to policies that affect the consumer.

Casper offers sleepers a 100-night trial period, a 10-year warranty period, free shipping, and free returns.

They also make their mattresses in the USA, if that’s an important factor for you.

Check out the table below to see the details of Casper’s company policies.

CompanyCasper
Score9.0
Trial Period100 nights

These are excellent policies, especially the free shipping and free returns. These trial and warranty periods are a little on the short side, relative to other companies. But ultimately, Casper is a good example of a modern direct-to-consumer brand, with regard to their consumer-friendly policies.

To date, we have tested 395+ mattresses from 105 different brands. The average trial length is 175 nights and the average warranty is 13 years, excluding 42% of mattresses that offer lifetime warranties.
