Standard Mattress Sizes

California King Mattress Size

Best For
Couples + Kids or Pets
Min. Room Size
10 x 12′
Dimensions
72 x 84″
The California King mattress size was developed after the standard King size in an effort to accommodate larger rooms and taller people, more common along the west coast (hence the name).
This mattress is 4″ narrower than a standard King, but 4″ longer and the extra height can really come in handy, especially for sleepers over 6′ tall.

King Mattress Size

Best For
Couples + Kids or Pets
Min. Room Size
10 x 12′
Dimensions
76 x 80″
The King mattress is 16″ wider than a Queen and is a popular choice for couples with larger bedrooms or those who have young kids sneaking in their bed at night. This mattress is also 5″ longer than a Queen size mattress and the same length as the Twin XL mattress.
Queen Mattress Size

Best For
Couples
Min. Room Size
10 x 10′
Dimensions
60 x 80″
The Queen mattress is the most common mattress size. It works well for couples, without taking up a huge amount of space in a room. The Queen is 15″ wider than a Full size mattress and 22″ wider than a Twin.

Full Mattress Size

Best For
Children, Single Adults, Couples
Min. Room Size
8 x 10′
Dimensions
54 x 75″
The Full mattress is also sometimes called a “double mattress” and is the smallest mattress that would be suitable for couples. It’s 7″ wider than a Twin and the same length.
Although it’s not a huge difference, the extra length is nice to accommodate single sleepers with pets or even small couples. I would not recommend the Full for tall couples.
If you are tight on space, the full mattress has another advantage, as it fits more easily in smaller rooms.
Twin XL Mattress Size

Best For
Tall Children or Single Adults
Min. Room Size
8 x 10′
Dimensions
38 x 80″
The Twin XL mattress is 6″ longer than a standard Twin. Because of this added length, Twin XL is a good option for taller children or teens headed off to college (as Twin XL is usually the standard for dorms).
A Twin XL would also be suitable for single adults who don’t share the bed with other people or pets.

Twin Mattress Size

Best For
Children
Min. Room Size
8 x 10′
Dimensions
38 x 75″
A Twin mattress is the natural choice for when a child outgrows a crib / toddler bed. It’s almost 2′ longer in length and 11″ wider. This mattress is sometimes referred to as a “single mattress”.
Shorter adults may also fit on a Twin-sizes mattress, but for a 6′ tall adult, it’s likely to feel a bit short.
Crib Mattress Size

Best For
Infants
Min. Room Size
7 x 7′
Dimensions
27x 52″
A crib mattress is a firm mattress that nestles within the rails of a standard crib. Crib mattresses are smaller than a Twin-sized mattresses and are usually thinner as well.
Crib mattresses may have extra features like 2-sided, flippable firmness, or more natural, organic, and healthier materials.
Toddler vs. Crib
The toddler mattress is actually the same size as the crib mattress, but may be a little softer. Toddler mattresses are designed for older kids, aged 2-5 years old.
A toddler bed usually lacks the rails that a crib would have and are designed for toddlers to easily get in and out of on their own.
Split Mattresses
Split King and Split California King mattresses are the same sizes as their non-split counterpart, but it’s divided into two mattresses.
This design can be beneficial when using an adjustable base or to limit motion transfer from partner movements.
It may also be a solution for bedrooms located through narrow passageways or winding stairs. In these scenarios, it can be difficult to navigate with larger mattresses so splitting the area makes it easier to carry.
Specialty Mattress Sizes
In addition to the 10 common mattress sizes mentioned above, there are still others on the market. Additional sizes have been developed for a number of different reasons, but the target markets continue to support these unusual sizes.
Here’s a rundown of some of the most popular specialty mattress sizes.

What Mattress Size Is Right For You?
Not sure which bed / mattress size is best for you? Ask yourself a few questions before making a selection.
#1. How large is your room?
Having a smaller room may warrant a smaller mattress. For example, Full, Queen, and King mattresses are all suitable for couples, but vary greatly in how much space they take up.

Measure your space. You should plan for at least 2′ of clearance on each side of the mattress in order to comfortably navigate the space. If only one person will be sleeping on the mattress, you can also butt one end up against the wall to maximize the area.

The illutration above shows how four different size mattresses fit within a 12’x’12’ room. As you can see, the smaller mattress sizes have much more clearance on the sides compared to the larger sizes.
Mattress Size | Minimum Room Size |
---|---|
Crib / Toddler | 7′ x 7′ |
Twin | 8′ x 10′ |
Twin XL | 8′ x 10′ |
Full | 8′ x 10′ |
Queen | 10′ x 10′ |
King | 10′ x 12′ |
California King | 10′ x 12′ |
#2. Who is sleeping in it?
Single adults, couples, children, teens, and pets all require a different amount of space to comfortably sleep at night.
Sleeping position can also play a role as side sleepers may require a larger sleeping area than a back or stomach sleeper.

Make sure to consider the needs of everyone sleeping and select a mattress that can accommodate individual needs.
For a mattress for kids, consider the following sizes:
- Crib / Toddler
- Twin
- Twin XL

For a mattress for single adults, consider the following sizes:
- Full (aka double)
- Queen
- King

For a mattress for couples or families, consider the following sizes:
- Queen
- King
- California King

Pets and kids are a bit of a wild card in how much space they take up compared to their body size. Always account for more area than you think in these cases.
#3. Don’t forget the bedding.
Larger mattresses often require more expensive bedding sets (if you want to splurge for the good stuff).
For example, King sized bed bedding compared to Queen bedding will be a notably increase in price. King mattresses also look better with longer pillows or 3 pillows across instead of the standard two.

If high-end bedding isn’t a luxury you want to splurge on, this may be a moot point. But it’s certainly worth mentioning from a design standpoint.
The same can be said for custom or unique mattress sizes. RV sizes or specialty XL sizes may be harder to find bedding for or you may have limited options.

The California King mattress is 4″ narrowed, but 4″ longer as well. Looking at square footage surface area, the King mattress is technically bigger than the California King (42.2 sf. vs. 42.0 sf.). However, for most sleepers, the California King will feel bigger because it is wider.
The largest mattress is the Alaskan King, 108 x 108″.
