We test every mattress for off-gassing after we unbox it and record the smell intensity and full smell duration. With Sealy, here is what we found.
| Sealy Mattresses | Off-Gassing – Score | Off-Gassing – Smell | Off-Gassing – Days |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sealy Cocoon Chill | 0.0 | Strong | 41 days |
| Sealy Icon | 8.1 | Strong | 7 days |
| Sealy Posturepedic Carver | 6.9 | Strong | 11 days |
| Sealy Posturepedic Hybrid | 6.9 | Strong | 11 days |

| Sealy Posturepedic Pro Lincoln Heights | 8.1 | Strong | 7 days |
| Sealy Posturepedic Spring | 9.2 | Strong | 3 days |
All Sealy mattresses emitted a strong smell when they were first unbagged/unboxed. Only the Sealy Cocoon Chill shipped compressed in a box and its off-gassing period lasted considerably longer than the rest.
For reference, the average off-gassing duration is 7 days based on the 370+ mattresses we’ve tested to date.
Off-gassing is a typical process for mattresses that use foam and is not an indication that the mattress is toxic. That said, some of these mattresses do have long off-gassing periods, which is important to be aware of if you’re sensitive to strong odors.
