Each best list is put through a customized performance analysis with specialized consideration given to our objective & data-driven performance tests. In addition, we consider mattress type, design, materials, value, price, and more.

Performance Testing Factors
Performance Testing Factors

For our Best Soft Mattress list, we based our selections on the best-scoring mattresses, according to our battery of testing and formulaic-driven scoring.

Our tests analyze performance across 8 critical factors, including cooling, motion transfer, response time, edge support, sex, pressure relief, off-gassing, and company. In addition, we also test sinkage and bounce (though these are not scoring factors).

Our tests include objective and quantifiable data whenever possible. In addition, we use subjective assessment supported by data to round out our testing process.

Our scores are based on mathematical formulas and equations that utilize inputs from our data-driven testing.

You can see our complete testing and scoring process here.

In choosing the best soft mattresses we looked at the totality of all of our tests, scores, data, and reviews to date. We analyzed this data alongside our established best mattress framework here.

In addition to achieving a high-performance score, all mattresses on this list have an extra soft or soft firmness (between 3-4 on the firmness scale).

When selecting the best soft mattresses, we’re looking at a combination of overall scoring performance, firmness, and US availability.

To be included within this list all mattresses:

  • Had to have a firmness between 3.5-4.5 out of 10, where 10 is the most firm.
  • Had to have a performance score of 9.09 or higher.
  • Had to be available for purchase within the USA.
  • Cannot be an adjustable mattress (we have a separate list for adjustables, see our best adjustable mattresses)

Outliers that met the criteria above, but were still excluded for other various reasons are listed below.

Best For

  • Outstanding pressure relief with 5.0″ of comfort material
  • Exceptional cooling performance
  • Lifetime warranty

Considerations

  • Soft version not ideal for back and stomach sleepers, especially over 225 lbs.
  • Trial period less than the average at 120 nights
  • 14″ thickness may be too tall to match some furniture sets

Our Verdict

The WinkBed is a 14″ hybrid made up of gel foam, poly foam, a pocketed coil unit, and a thick euro-top cover for an added luxury feel. This is the mattress to beat for truly outstanding mattress performance based on our tests.

The Winkbed is available in three different firmness levels—softer (4), luxury firm (6), and firmer (7), where 10 is the most firm. This recommendation focuses on the Softer version.

The Winkbed offers a deep level of sinkage coming from its plush euro-top cover. We measured a sinkage depth that is 10% higher than average yet the feel is still quite balanced in terms of the contour and hug around your body. Its bounce levels are also high (7% higher), aiding general ease of movement.

The Winkbed is our #1 performing mattress and is referenced all throughout our website for having the highest performance score (9.82) that we’ve seen to date. Another reason Winkbed places so high on our lists is its price.

Even as the highest-performing scoring mattress, its cost is still within 9% of the average mattress or hybrid we test. At $1,499, this is only $123 more than the average while other luxury models can easily go for $3,000 to $4,000. So, if $1,499 is within your budget, this is the soft mattress to try.

Best For

  • More traditional coil mattress feel with a plush quilted cover
  • Fantastic for couples—high bounce for sex and low motion transfer for sleeping with a partner
  • White glove delivery—ships uncompressed, includes in-home setup and removal of old mattress

Consideration

  • Costs 30% more than the average mattress
  • 14.5″ option may be too tall to pair with high-profile foundations
  • $99 return fee if things end up not working out

Our Verdict

The Saatva Classic is a traditional coil-on-coil mattress. In addition, you have the option of choosing between an 11.5″ or 14.5″ model. The price is the same for both, and those looking for a soft mattress are best served with the thicker comfort layer (14.5″ option).

The Saatva is available in three firmness levels—Plush Soft (3.5), Luxury Firm (5.5), or Firm (8), where 10 is the most firm. This recommendation focuses on the Plush Soft version, which is Extra Soft compared to other soft mattresses on this list.

The feel of the Classic is distinguished by its use of foam-encased coils rather than dense poly or memory foam. It also uses a thick euro-top cover, which provides deep sinkage (2.40″) and adds to that soft luxury feel. Furthermore, bounce is extremely high due to the dual coil layers (58% more bounce than the average).

From a performance perspective, the Saatva Classic is nearly up there with the Winkbed, at 9.74. This puts it within the top 1% of all mattresses tested to date and is decidedly the best coil mattress we’ve reviewed.

A queen-size Saatva Classic costs $1,795, which is 30% more than the average mattress price (an increase of $419). For this “Best Soft Mattress” list specifically, it’s only $65 higher than average. But no matter how you slice it, the Saatva Classic is an incredible soft mattress option for those who enjoy a traditional coil mattress experience.

Best For

  • Outstanding pressure relief with a balanced hybrid feel
  • Extremely fast material response
  • Exceptional cooling performance with cooling fibers in cover

Considerations

  • Motion transfer levels are a bit higher than ideal (9.06 m/s²)
  • $99 return fee and shorter trial period than average (120 nights)
  • Not well suited for heavier weighted back and stomach sleepers (soft version)

Our Verdict

The Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe is a 13.25″ thick hybrid that uses a thin quilted cover, a latex-like layer of poly foam, a layer of transitional poly foam, a pocketed coil unit, and a thin support foam base.

It is available in three firmness levels—soft (4), medium-firm (6), and firm (8), making it a good option for a wide range of sleeper weights, sleeping positions, and other personal preferences. This recommendation focuses on the Soft version.

The Aurora Luxe has more moderate levels of sinkage at 2.04″. The thinner cover limits this depth somewhat, but it more than makes up for it with cooling performance. Bounce is also more moderate than our previous picks and the mattress has a typical hybrid feel with balanced contour and hug.

In our performance tests, the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe Hybrid has an overall score of 9.33, which ranks it in the top 5% of all mattresses tested to date. For specifically hybrid mattresses, it is among the top 4%.

When it comes to price, the Aurora Luxe has a bit of a premium ($322.85 higher than average). A queen size costs $1,699, which is also 23% more expensive than the average mattress tested. In our view, the exceptional performance, most notably in cooling and pressure relief, more than justifies this cost.

Best For

  • Outstanding cooling performance with cooling cover and graphite-infused poly foam
  • Exceptional pressure relief with a comfort layer 2″ thicker than average
  • Extremely supportive edge for both sitting and lying

Considerations

  • Motion transfer levels were fairly high (11.10 m/s²)—not the best for sensitive sleepers
  • 15″ size has a noticeably bigger look than standard mattresses
  • $99 return fee

Our Verdict

The Nolah Evolution 15 is a 15″ hybrid that has a 6″ comfort layer made up of equal parts plush euro-top cover (with cooling material), graphite-infused poly foam, and a firmer transitional poly foam.

This mattress is available in three different firmnesses—soft (4), medium (5.5), and firm (8), where 10 is the most firm. This recommendation focuses on the soft version.

The Nolah Evolution provides deep sinkage (2.48″) and has moderate bounce (8.72″). Even with the extra comfort material, the mattress stays easy to move around on while providing a balanced contour and hug.

When it comes to performance, the Nolah Evolution 15 is no slouch with a 9.28 overall score. This ranks it among the top 7% of all mattresses tested to date and it can be found through many of our best of lists, including our best mattress for 2025.

However, this is another mattress with a slight premium. At $1,424 the Evolution is only 3% more than the average hybrid we test. With all consideration for price and performance, this mattress is a “no-brainer” for sleepers looking for a softer feel.

Best For

  • Extra-soft feel (3.5 out of 10)
  • Lightweight side sleepers
  • Outstanding cooling performance with Amerisleep’s distinct “refresh cover”

Considerations

  • Motion transfer is high (9.65 m/s²)
  • Heavier-weighted back and stomach sleepers may find it too soft and not achieve proper spinal alignment
  • Trial period is only 100 nights

Our Verdict

The Amerisleep AS5 is a 14″ luxury hybrid. And by “luxury” we are referring to its above-average-thickness, material quality, pressure relief performance, and, of course, price. This is the first pick on our list to use (3″) memory foam in its comfort layer, which gives it an intense memory foam feel.

This is also our first pick with a singular firmness option. The AS5 Hybrid is extra soft with a 3.5 rating out of 10.

The AS5 has moderate sinkage (2.21″) despite its softer feel. However, heavier body parts like hips and shoulders will easily sink lower to a comfortable level. Bounce levels were moderately high (9.71″). Combined with the ultra-fast material response, the mattress is surprisingly extremely easy to move around on.

In our performance tests, the Amerisleep AS5 Hybrid scored a 9.24, which ranks it among the top 10% of all mattresses tested to date. For just our hybrid category, it is among the top 7%. The price is another matter.

A queen-size AS5 Hybrid costs $2,149. This is considerably more expensive than the average mattress price (56% higher price). That being said, the AS5 Hybrid is among the best extra soft mattresses I’ve tested to date and a fantastic pick for sleepers looking for that soft feel.

Best For

  • One of the best cooling performances we’ve seen to date
  • Extremely low motion transfer (3.74 m/s²) despite high bounce
  • Free shipping and returns along with a lifetime warranty

Considerations

  • Pressure relief is excellent but not as good as others on this list
  • Material recovery speed is slow to fully form back to shape (1.7 seconds)
  • Edge support is not as robust as others on this list

Our Verdict

The Bear Elite Hybrid is a 14″ hybrid made up of 1″ copper-infused memory foam, 2″ of poly foam, 8″ pocketed coils, and a 1″ support foam base. It also has a 2″ quilted cover enhanced by phase change material for exceptional cooling.

The Bear Elite Hybrid is available in three firmness levels—soft (4.5), medium-firm (6), or slightly firm (7.5). This range makes it a solid pick for a wider range of sleepers. This recommendation focuses on the soft version, which is slightly firmer than the other options on this list.

The mattress offers sleepers moderate sinkage (2.14″) and high bounce (10.32″). Lying creates a slightly restrained memory foam hug around the body. Compared to the Amerisleep AS5, the Bear will be more similar to a traditional mattress than the intense memory foam experience.

From a performance perspective, the Bear Elite Hybrid achieved a 9.24 score (tied with Amerisleep AS5), which puts it within the top 10% of mattresses tested to date. Fortunately, the price is on the lower end.

At $1,614, the Bear Elite Hybrid is still 4% more expensive than the average memory foam hybrid. However, it is the second lowest price on this list. All things considered, this is a great option for a soft mattress without deep sinkage or an intense memory foam hug.

Best For

  • Top-tier cooling performance with phase change cover
  • Extremely supportive edge for sitting and lying
  • Fantastic sex performance mostly due to high bounce

Considerations

  • Price is 25% higher than the average hybrid
  • Very high motion transfer – highest on this list
  • Longer off-gassing duration (10 days)

Our Verdict

The Leesa Sapira Chill is a 14″ hybrid with a focus on cooling performance and is among the highest tiers offered in the Leesa mattress lineup. Its design includes a thick quilted cover with phase change materials, 2 layers of dense poly foam, and a transitional poly foam to ease the body into the pocketed coil base.

This mattress is available in three firmness levels—Soft (4), Medium-Firm (6), or Firm (8). This recommendation focuses on the Soft version.

The Sapira Chill provides moderate sinkage but high bounce. This gives it a feel that is both balanced and easy to move around on. The top two poly foam layers lean more towards feeling like memory foam with a more dramatic contour and hug. However, it’s not quite as intense as traditional memory foam.

In our performance tests, the Leesa Sapira Chill scored a 9.11. This ranks it among the top 15% of mattresses tested to date. The motion transfer and off-gassing categories drag its overall score down, but it is still a powerhouse in the other areas of performance.

At $1,727 it is 25% more expensive than the average hybrid. Like the other picks, this price is more than justified for a soft mattress with this level of performance.
