Each best list is put through a customized performance analysis with specialized consideration given to our objective & data-driven performance tests. In addition, we consider mattress type, design, materials, value, price, and more.

Performance Categories
Performance Categories

For our Best Foam Mattress list, we based our selections on the best-scoring mattresses, according to our battery of testing and formulaic-driven scoring.

Our tests analyze performance across 8 critical factors, including cooling, motion transfer, response time, edge support, sex, pressure relief, off-gassing, and company. In addition, we also test sinkage and bounce (though these are not scoring factors).

Our tests include objective and quantifiable data whenever possible. In addition, we use subjective assessment supported by data to round out our testing process.

Our scores are based on mathematical formulas and equations that utilize inputs from our data-driven testing.

You can see our complete testing and scoring process here.

In choosing the best mattresses for side sleepers we looked at the totality of all of our tests, scores, data, and reviews to date. We analyzed this data alongside our established best mattress framework here.

When selecting the best foam mattress, we’re looking at a combination of overall scoring performance, firmness, feel, and US availability.

To be included within this best-of list all mattresses:

  • Had to have a firmness of 5-7 out of 10, where 10 is the most firm. This ranges from medium to slightly firm.
  • Had to have a performance of 8.33 or higher
  • Had to not have a dramatic memory foam or a dramatic latex feel. However, it could use some memory foam or latex foam (provided that usage did not create a dramatic memory foam / latex foam feel).
  • Had to be available for purchase within the USA.

Best For

  • Very fast response time and no “stuck” feeling
  • Fantastic edge support
  • Budget-friendly, under $700
  • 365-night trial period

Considerations

  • May not be ideal for heavier bodies (250 lbs. or more)
  • High levels of bounce + very minimal sinkage may not be ideal for all preferences

Our Verdict

The Endy mattress is a 10.00″ foam mattress made of equal parts poly foam and support foam. The poly foam is split into two layers – one is a highly responsive and open-celled, and the other is denser with more pushback.

The Endy is available in three firmness levels—Plush, Medium-Firm, and Firm. We tested the Medium-Firm version, which ended up being firmer than expected, closer to a 7 out of 10 with a slightly firm feel. I would estimate the Plush version to be a 5 with a Medium feel and the Firm version would be closer to an 8, with a Firm feel.

The Medium-Firm version of this mattress has very minimal sinkage and very high levels of bounce. This makes it more ideal for back and stomach sleeping while having a slight hug around the body.

In our performance tests, this mattress earned an overall score of 9.09, ranking the mattress in the top 14% of all mattresses tested to date. For just foam mattresses, it makes the top 7%.

The Endy is $695 for a queen-sized mattress, which is less than half the average mattress price. This is a phenomenal value, especially for back and stomach sleepers under 250 lbs.

Best For

  • Best performance under $1,100
  • Very low levels of motion transfer (2.06 m/s²)
  • Fast materiel responsiveness

Considerations

  • Low bounce hurts sex performance
  • Support when seated at the edge is a bit lacking (5.5″ of sinkage)
  • 120-night trial is shorter than average

Our Verdict

The Leesa Original is a 10″ mattress that includes a blend of poly foam, memory foam, and support foam, all wrapped within a thin Tencel cover. This mattress is the 2nd highest-performing foam mattress (among 400+ mattresses tested to date), which is also budget-friendly—under $1.1K.

The Leesa is available in a single firmness, 6 out of 10, which gives the mattress a medium-firm feel. This firmness would generally be considered suitable for a wide range of sleepers.

It has moderate sinkage and low levels of bounce, for a balanced and restrained feel. Sinkage when sitting directly on the edge is a bit deeper than average (5.5)”, but this is not uncommon among foam mattresses.

In our performance tests, the Leesa Original earned an overall score of 9.00, ranking in the top 22% of all mattresses.

In addition, the price isn’t bad. For a queen-sized mattress, the Leesa Original is $1,059, which is 6% less expensive than the average foam mattress. For a great value with a balanced feel, the Leesa Original is the mattress to beat.

Best For

  • Low motion transfer levels
  • Exceptional pressure relief, with 7″ of comfort material
  • Deep sinkage, good for side sleepers

Considerations

  • Low bounce—a disadvantage for sex performance
  • Slow material responsiveness
  • Trial period is bit shorter than average, only 101-nights

Our Verdict

The GhostBed Luxe Foam mattress is the thickest foam model from the brand at 14″. Its design includes a thick quilted cover, memory foam, poly foam, and support foam.

The GhostBed Luxe Foam is available in a single firmness level — medium-firm. This is a 6 out of 10 on our firmness scale.

This mattress has very deep sinkage and very low levels of bounce. Despite the deeper sinkage, it still has a balanced contour, likely thanks to the transitional poly foam below the memory foam.

In our performance tests, this mattress earned an overall score of 8.85, ranking the mattress in the 32% of all mattresses tested to date. For pressure relief, especially, most mattresses at this price point are not earning the same 10/10 score as the Luxe Foam.

The GhostBed Luxe Foam is $1,499 for a queen-sized mattress, which is just about average, based on all 400+ mattresses we’ve tested to date. At this price, the Luxe Foam is a great value as long as you understand the trade-off of worse response and overall ease of movement.

Best For

  • Materials are very responsive, tied with the fastest we’ve tested to date
  • Great cooling performance with a thin cover
  • Value priced—52% less than the average mattress

Considerations

  • Slightly deeper sinkage than average when seated at the edge (4.25″)
  • 100-night trial period is shorter than the 179-night average
  • Only 3.0″ comfort layer, may not be suitable for all heavier-weighted sleepers

Our Verdict

The Vaya is a high-profile 12″ all-foam mattress with a thin cover, 3.0″ poly foam comfort layer, and a 9.0″ support foam base. It’s a pretty simple design, but sticking to the basics allows the Vaya to hit a price point that is notably lower than many other foam mattresses.

This mattress has a medium-firm feel, 6 out of 10 on our firmness scale. This firmness is widely preferred by a range of sleepers including back, stomach, and side sleepers.

It has moderate sinkage and moderate bounce, giving the mattress a balanced feel.

In our performance tests, the Vaya scored 8.80, ranking the mattress among the top 37% of all mattresses tested to date. It also has a value price to go along with that above-average score.

A Queen Vaya mattress is only $699, making it 38% less expensive than the average foam mattress, a savings of $426. If you’re on a tight budget but still want great performance, the Vaya is a solid choice.

Best For

  • Excellent cooling performance with its Energex foam layers
  • A full 365-night trial period
  • Lively, responsive surface makes for good sex performance

Considerations

  • Pressure relief is good, but not amazing
  • Heavier sleepers may find its 10″ profile too thin ideal support and pressure relief

Our Verdict

The Boring Mattress mattress is a 10″ foam mattress made of 2 poly foam comfort layers (a branded foam called Energex) that sits atop a 7″ base support foam. Its cover is a thin, breathable knit design with a stretchy feel.

The Boring Mattress is available in a single firmness level — medium-firm. This is a 6 out of 10 rating, where 10 is the most firm.

This mattress has moderate sinkage and moderate levels of bounce. Its comfort Energex foam creates a soft, balanced sensation that hits a bit of a wall if your body sinks too low. This makes it a bit more suitable for back and stomach sleepers, and less so for side sleepers.

In our performance tests, this mattress earned an overall score of 8.72, ranking the mattress in the top 46% of all mattresses tested to date. Within the foam mattress sub-type, its performance is among the top 38%. What’s more, the Boring is priced among the lower end of this list.

A queen-sized Boring Mattress is $699, which is 38% less expensive than the average foam model. Only the Siena & Zoma Start mattresses are more affordable on this list. So, while simple, its performance is well-rounded and an incredible value for the money.

Best For

  • Fantastic value—$629 for a queen mattress
  • Minimal sinkage is great for many stomach or back sleepers especially
  • Good edge support for sitting and lying at or near the edge

Considerations

  • Less sinkage isn’t ideal for side sleepers
  • High bounce is great for sex, but some could find it a bit much for general use
  • Slightly more motion transfer than average

Our Verdict

The Zoma Start is a 10″ foam mattress with a 2.0″ comfort layer. It is made of gel memory foam, poly foam, and a support foam base. Despite having a thinner comfort layer, the Zoma can still be a great pick for many sleepers.

It is available in a single firmness, 6.5 out of 10, giving the mattress a medium-firm feel. This firmness and minimal sinakge depth is ideal for stomach and back sleepers.

It has minimal sinkage and high levels of bounce. Although high bounce can be universally enjoyed by all sleeping positions, most side sleepers don’t fare as well with minimal sinkage. Contour and hug are an important part of comfort and support for side sleepers.

In our performance tests, the Zoma Start had an overall score of 8.56. This ranks Zoma among the bottom 42%, comparing all mattresses tested to date. When we look exclusively at foam mattresses, that rank rises to the top 46%. Now, before we write off Zoma for its near-average performance let’s get to its biggest advantage—price.

A Queen Zoma Start mattress costs only $637, nearly half the price of the average foam mattress. This saves sleepers $488 (compared to average) and can be an excellent option for sleepers wanting to stay under $650.

  • Responsive with robust edges

Considerations

  • 37% higher motion transfer levels than average
  • Less bounce means a lower sex score
  • Return fee of $99

Our Verdict

The Nolah Signature mattress is a 12.00″ foam mattress made of a complex layering of poly foams, memory foams, and support foam, all topped with a quilted cover.

The Nolah Signature is available in a single firmness level — medium-firm. This is a 6 out of 10, where 10 is the most firm. It is the rating suitable for the widest range of bodies.

This mattress has deep sinkage and low levels of bounce. The quilted cover and modern foams create more of a balanced feel, as opposed to an exacting memory foam hug around the body.

In our performance tests, this mattress earned an overall score of 8.51, which is just about tied with the average performance score found across all 400+ mattresses we’ve tested to date.

The Nolah Signature is $1,299 for a queen-sized mattress, which is 13% less expensive than the average mattress. However, foam models tend to be a bit cheaper, and the Signature is 18% more than the average foam mattress.

Altogether, the Nolah Signature has solid performance in many areas, especially pressure relief and cooling. Relative to its price, however, it simply has okay value. Others on this list do more for less money.

  • Back or stomach sleepers looking for minimal sinkage and contour
  • Low levels of bounce (7.37″)
  • Excellent edge support when lying at or near the edge of the mattress

Considerations

  • Strong off-gassing that takes 9 days to dissipate
  • 100-night trial period, shorter than 172-night trial average
  • Low bounce negatively impacts the sex performance score

Our Verdict

The Tuft & Needle Mint mattress is an 11.75″ foam mattress with a 5.0″ comfort layer, making it a great option for sleepers wanting better pressure relief.

The Mint is available in a single firmness, 6 out of 10, with a medium-firm feel. This firmness can be suitable for many different types of sleepers.

It has minimal sinkage and low levels of bounce. Like other mattresses on this page with minimal sinkage, the Tuft & Needle Mint may be a better option for stomach or back sleepers, as opposed to side sleepers.

In our performance tests, this mattress earned an overall score of 8.49, putting this mattress in the bottom 49% of all foam mattresses. But where it lacks in areas like worse sex performance and a longer off-gassing duration, it undeniably has excellent pressure relief.

That being said, its price is higher than many options on this list. The Mint is $1,101 for a queen mattress, making it 2% more expensive than the average foam mattress. While not the highest score on this list, if you’re a back or stomach sleeper, the Mint is still a good option.

  • Fast material response

Considerations

  • Short trial period compared to average, only 100 nights
  • Low bounce makes for less ideal sex performance
  • Good but not great cooling, despite convolutions

Our Verdict

The SweetNight Coolnest mattress is a 15.50″ foam mattress made of multiple poly foam layers, convoluted memory foam for breathability, and support foam made up of 5 zones for enhanced comfort/support.

The SweetNight Coolnest is available in a single firmness level — medium. This is a 5 out of 10 on our firmness scale, where 10 is the most firm.

This mattress has moderate sinkage and low levels of bounce. This is completed with a dramatic contour and hug around the body, yet the surface is still very responsive.

In our performance tests, this mattress earned an overall score of 8.47, ranking the mattress in the bottom 37% of all mattresses tested to date. While that isn’t the most impressive comparison, its price makes it look much better.

The SweetNight Coolnest is $500 for a queen-sized mattress, which is 66% less expensive than average. Even if we only look at all foam models, the Coolnest is still less than half of the average foam model. All in all, it’s not the best mattress out there, but you’d be hard-pressed to find better at this price.

Best For

  • Fast response time with near instant recovery
  • Fantastic edge support for lying and sitting at the edge
  • Extremely low price, even for a foam mattress ($399)

Considerations

  • Higher motion transfer, especially for an all-foam design
  • Low bounce makes for worse sex performance
  • Pressure relief is good, but could be better

Our Verdict

The Siena Signature 12″ is a 12″ foam mattress made up of 2″ of memory foam on the top layer, 2″ of poly foam in the middle layer, and 8″ of support foam for its base.

The Siena Signature 12″ is available in a single firmness level — medium-firm. This is a rating of 6 out of 10, where 10 is the most firm.

This mattress has minimal sinkage and very low levels of bounce. While technically a memory foam top-layer, the minimal sinkage comes with less exact of a hug around one’s body. This is more similar to many types of poly foam. This combination makes it more suitable for back and stomach sleepers.

In our performance tests, this mattress earned an overall score of 8.45, ranking the mattress in the bottom 36% of all mattresses tested to date. While that may not sound impressive, the Siena achieves this with a much lower price tag than other options on this list.

The Siena Signature 12″ is $399 for a queen-sized mattress, which is 65% less than the average foam mattress. In the end, this mattress provides near average performance levels for a fraction of the cost.
