Best Firm Mattress: Our Experts Test 300+ Mattresses

Derek Hales

Updated

For many sleepers, a firm mattress creates the right support to keep the body from sinking down too far into the mattress. This can help to alleviate back pains, provide better pressure relief, and create more restorative sleep.

Our experts have tested 300+ mattresses to find the absolute 8 best firm mattress models on the market. Our data-driven testing can help you find the mattress that meets your needs, preferences, and budget. Let’s get started.

Each best list is put through a customized performance analysis with specialized consideration given to our objective & data-driven performance tests. In addition, we consider mattress type, design, materials, value, price, and more.

Performance Testing Factors
Performance Testing Factors

For our Best Firm Mattress list, we based our selections on the best-scoring mattresses, according to our battery of testing and formulaic-driven scoring.

Our tests analyze performance across 8 critical factors, including cooling, motion transfer, response time, edge support, sex, pressure relief, off-gassing, and company. In addition, we also test sinkage and bounce (though these are not scoring factors).

Our tests include objective and quantifiable data whenever possible. In addition, we use subjective assessment supported by data to round out our testing process.

Our scores are based on mathematical formulas and equations that utilize inputs from our data-driven testing.

You can see our complete testing and scoring process here.

In choosing the best firm mattresses we looked at the totality of all of our tests, scores, data, and reviews to date. We analyzed this data alongside our established best mattress framework here.

In addition to achieving a high-performance score, all mattresses on this list have a firm feel (between 7-8 out of 10 on the firmness scale).

When selecting the best firm mattresses, we’re looking at a combination of overall scoring performance, firmness, and US availability.

To be included within this list all mattresses:

  • Had to have a firmness of 8 of 10, where 10 is the most firm.
  • Had to have a performance score of 8.73 or higher.
  • Had to be available for purchase within the USA.

Outliers that met the criteria above, but were still excluded for other various reasons are listed below.

Are You a Plus-Sized Sleeper?

If you’re a heavier sleeper over 250 lbs., but especially over 300 lbs., check our best mattress for heavy people list. HD / plus-sized mattresses are designed to higher density foams, thicker profiles, and thicker wires on the coils, all of which are better tuned to the needs of heavier weighted sleepers.

Best For

  • Exceptional cooling performance, 10/10
  • Fantastic edge support for both sitting and lying at or near the edge of the mattress
  • Pressure relief is incredible with high-quality materials

Considerations

  • Available in two heights—11.5″ or 14.5″ (same price)
  • Higher bounce may not be ideal for all sleepers’ preferences
  • $99 return fee

Our Verdict

The Saatva Classic is a high-performing coil mattress that uses a pocketed coil base and a comfort layer of foam-encased coils. It is topped by a Euro-style pillow topper.

The Saatva comes in three firmness levels—Soft (3.5), Medium (5.5), and Firm (8). The firm version is typically recommended for back or stomach sleepers, but some heavier side sleepers may also enjoy it because of the plush cover.

In our tests of the medium version, Saatva had deep sinkage and extremely high levels of bounce. I would expect the firm version to have slightly less sinkage, but you’re still going to have a bit of contour because of the plush feel of the Euro cover. The firm version may also have a slightly higher bounce because of the extra pushback.

In our performance tests, the Saatva Classic earned an overall score of 9.74, ranking as the #2 best mattress tested to date.

It costs $1,795 for a queen mattress. Compared to over 300+ mattresses tested to date, the Saatva Classic is 29% more expensive than average. But remember, you’re also getting a mattress with significantly better performance. For reference, the average overall score is 8.54. Saatva Classic’s 9.74 is considerably better than average.

The Saatva Contour 5 is another firm option from Saatva. The overall score isn’t quite as high as the Classic, but still provides a quality performance level that is great for sleepers looking for a memory foam feel. This mattress has minimal sinkage and very low levels of bounce. Unlike the Saatva Classic, which encourages motion and engagement, the Contour5 is designed to limit bounce and activity on the mattress. It’s also quite a bit more expensive, but if you like the feel of memory foam it can be worth it.

  • Exceptional cooling with a quilted cooling cover
  • Fantastic pressure relief with a 4.25″ comfort layer
  • Fantastic cooling, a perfect score of 10 out of 10
  • Response time is 0.2 seconds faster than average

Considerations

  • Priced 20% higher than the average hybrid mattress
  • 120-night trial period is shorter than the 178-night average
  • $99 return fee if the mattress ends up not working out

Our Verdict

The Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe is a 13.25″ hybrid mattress with a quilted cover, infused with cooling fibers for advanced cooling performance. It has a poly foam comfort layer and a pocketed coil base for support.

This mattress is available in three firmness levels—Soft (4), Medium-Firm (6), and Firm (8). Like the Saatva, the firm version is best suited for back or stomach sleepers.

We tested the medium version and found it to have moderate levels of both sinkage and bounce. Based on material density and the overall feel of the mattress, I would expect the firm version to have a similar feel.

In our performance test, the Aurora Luxe has an overall score 9.33, putting the mattress in the top 5% of all mattresses tested to date (over 300+ compared).

The price is 21% more than the average hybrid, at $1,698 for a queen, but the Aurora Luxe still offers a great value, given its higher performance.

Also like the Aurora Luxe, the Signature hybrid has a quilted cover and poly foam comfort layer with a pocketed coil base. This mattress has slightly less sinkage and higher levels of bounce compared to Aurora. Lastly, the Signature Hybrid is sold at a value-packed price of $999 for a queen. Best For

  • Amazing pressure relief with robust 6.0″ comfort layer
  • Exceptional cooling performance thanks largely to phase-change cover and pocketed coil base

Considerations

  • Price is 2% more than the average hybrid mattress
  • 26% more motion transfer than average levels
  • Deeper sinkage than average

Our Verdict

The Nolah Evolution 15 is a high-profile hybrid mattress with a plush quilted cover and 4.0″ poly foam comfort layer. The base is made of an 8.0″ pocketed coil system and a 1.0″ support foam.

This mattress is available in three firmness levels—Soft (4), Medium (5.5), or Firm (8). This guide focuses primarily on the firm version, but the soft firmness is a great option for lighter-weighted sleepers as well as side sleepers. The firm is the better option for back or stomach sleepers.

Our tests reviewed the medium firmness of the Evolution, which revealed a deep level of sinkage and moderate bounce. Based on the materials, I would expect the firm version to have less sinkage and a similar level of bounce.

The Evolution 15 has an overall score of 9.28, which ranks the mattress within the top 7% of all mattresses tested to date.

It has a higher performance and a price tag that is just slightly higher than average. A queen Evolution is $1,424, only 2% more than the average hybrid mattress, but the overall score performing well above the top 10% can justify the higher price for many sleepers.

  • Great edge support when sitting or lying on the mattress
  • Exceptional cooling performance with a cooling cover

Considerations

  • Price tag is 23% more than the average hybrid
  • Motion transfer levels are 42% more than average
  • High levels of bounce may not be ideal for all sleeper preferences

Our Verdict

The Leesa Sapira Chill is a hybrid mattress designed for great cooling and an active feel. It has a quilted cooling cover, poly foam comfort layer, and a pocketed coil base.

This mattress comes in three different firmness options—Soft (4), Medium-Firm (6), or Firm (8).

We tested the medium-firm version, which had moderate sinkage and high levels of bounce. I would expect the firm version to have similar levels, with slightly less sinkage. It still has a thick quilted cover (1.75″) with a more restrained feel compared to Saatva Classic or Nolah Evolution 15.

In our performance tests, the Sapira Chill earned an overall score of 9.11, ranking the mattress within the top 16% of all mattresses tested to date.

A queen mattress is $1,727, which is 23% more than the average hybrid. Like many other recommendations in this list, you’re paying more, but you’re also getting more (in terms of performance).

Best For

  • Sleepers on a budget looking for a mattress under $1000
  • Minimal sinkage and limited contour
  • Low levels of motion transfer and low bounce—classic memory foam feel

Considerations

  • Low bounce negatively hurts the sex score of this mattress
  • Responsiveness is fair, but also far from great
  • 120-night trial is shorter than 178-night average trial

Our Verdict

The Novosbed mattress is an 11″ memory foam mattress with a thin cover, a memory foam comfort layer, and a 7.0″ support foam base.

It is available in three firmness levels—Soft (4), Medium-Firm (6), or Firm (8).

In-house, we tested the Medium version, which has minimal sinkage and low levels of bounce. When considering how the Firm version would perform, I would expect minimal sinkage and possibly slightly more bounce, but not by much, given the nature of memory foam.

In our performance tests, the Novosbed earned an overall score 8.87, ranking in the top 28% of all mattresses tested to date. Now before you write off Novosbed for the lower rank, let’s talk price.

The Queen Novosbed is only $999, 12% less than the average memory foam mattress. If we consider the price of all 300+ mattresses tested to date, the savings grow—the Novosbed is 28% less expensive than the average mattress, for a savings of nearly $400. For a firm memory foam mattress on a budget, the Novosbed is the mattress to beat.

  • Flippable firmness—a firm side (8) and an extra firm side (9)
  • Great cooling performance
  • Good pressure relief on the firm side, the extra firm side has very high levels of pushback

Considerations

  • Slower material response time
  • Only 10″ thick which may not be sufficient for some heavier sleepers
  • 120-night trial is shorter than the 178-night average trial

Our Verdict

The Plank Firm, by Brooklyn Bedding, is a flippable foam mattress with both a firm and extra firm feel. It is made of support foam and a latex-like poly foam. Depending on which side of the mattress you’re on will determine which layer is on “top”.

One side has a firm feel, 8 out of 10, and the opposite side has an extra-firm feel, 9 out of 10. If you want a firm mattress, but are toeing the line between a firm and extra firm mattress, the Plank can be a great pick.

The Firm side of this mattress has moderate levels of both sinkage and bounce. It has a restrained, yet balanced feel.

In our tests, the Plank earned an overall score of 8.87, scoring within the top 28% of all mattresses tested to date. Like the Novosbed, this rank isn’t the highest we’ve seen, but it’s scratching the itch of a very targeted sleeper.

The price is $932 for a queen mattress, coming in 16% less expensive than the average foam mattress. If you’re looking for a firm mattress with the option to flip it over for an extra firm feel, Plank is the only brand we’ve tested to date that even offers such a thing.

Note: We tested both the firm and extra firm sides of the Plank mattress and the firm side scored 8.87 while the extra firm side scored 8.43.

Considerations

  • Slower material response time
  • Seated edge support struggles
  • $99 return fee

Our Verdict

The Loom & Leaf mattress is a 12″ memory foam mattress with a luxury feel and is also the mattress I have personally slept on for the past 8+ years. It has a plush organic cotton cover with gel foam, memory foam, and a support foam base.

It is available in two firmness levels, Medium (5.5) or Firm (8). While this guide is focused on the firm version, the Medium version is best suited to side sleepers or lighter-weighted sleepers.

We tested the luxury firm version and found the mattress to have extremely deep sinkage and very low levels of bounce. Based on the materials and design of the Loom & Leaf, I would expect the Firm version to have notably less sinkage, but still more contour than what you’ll get on the Novosbed or Leesa Sapira Chill.

Our performance tests revealed an overall performance score of 8.81, ranking the mattress in the top 33% of all mattresses tested to date. Again, this isn’t the top score, but its lower scoring categories are largely due to the nature of memory foam (slower response, lower bounce, and weaker edges).

A Queen Loom & Leaf is $2,395, 72% more than the average mattress we’ve tested. If you’re on a tight budget, this likely isn’t the mattress for you. But if you’re looking for a luxury memory foam mattress with a firm feel that still has contour and hug, the Loom & Leaf is an attractive option.

Best For

  • Organic latex mattress, uses certified organic materials
  • Interchangeable layers for custom firmness and mattress height (7″ – 13″)
  • Generalized contour of latex foam, very distinct feel

Considerations

  • High levels of bounce may not be ideal for all sleeper preferences
  • Motion transfer levels are 51% higher than average
  • 90-night trial is significantly shorter than the 178-night average

Our Verdict

The Sleep EZ Organic latex mattress is a customizable latex mattress that is priced together upon arrival. It is made of 3-4 different layers that can be interchangeable to create different feels and firmnesses. The total mattress thickness ranges from 7-13″ thick.

Depending on how you stack it, the firmnesses include soft, medium, firm, and extra firm. Being latex, the Sleep EZ has a generalized contour and less dramatic hug.

When we tested this mattress, we had it at a medium-firm feel, which generated moderate sinkage and high levels of bounce. When arranged with a firmer feel, the Sleep EZ will have slightly less sinkage and similar bounce.

In our performance tests, this mattress had an overall score of 8.73, scoring within the top 41% of all mattresses tested to date. Again, this isn’t the most impressive rank, but it’s a very specific mattress.

A Queen Sleep EZ is $1,699, right around the average price for latex foam, but it’s less common to see these interchangeable layers. If you want a customizable feel with organic materials, the Sleep EZ is a great pick.
