For many sleepers, a firm mattress creates the right support to keep the body from sinking down too far into the mattress. This can help to alleviate back pains, provide better pressure relief, and create more restorative sleep.
Our experts have tested 370+ mattresses to find the absolute 8 best firm mattress models on the market. Our data-driven testing can help you find the mattress that meets your needs, preferences, and budget. Let’s get started.

Each best list is put through a customized performance analysis with specialized consideration given to our objective & data-driven performance tests. In addition, we consider mattress type, design, materials, value, price, and more.

For our Best Firm Mattress list, we based our selections on the best-scoring mattresses, according to our battery of testing and formulaic-driven scoring.
Our tests analyze performance across 8 critical factors, including cooling, motion transfer, response time, edge support, sex, pressure relief, off-gassing, and company. In addition, we also test sinkage and bounce (though these are not scoring factors).
Our tests include objective and quantifiable data whenever possible. In addition, we use subjective assessment supported by data to round out our testing process.
Our scores are based on mathematical formulas and equations that utilize inputs from our data-driven testing.
In choosing the best firm mattresses we looked at the totality of all of our tests, scores, data, and reviews to date. We analyzed this data alongside our established best mattress framework here.
In addition to achieving a high-performance score, all mattresses on this list have a firm feel (8 out of 10 on the firmness scale, where 10 is the most firm).
When selecting the best firm mattresses, we’re looking at a combination of overall scoring performance, firmness, and US availability.
To be included within this list all mattresses:
- Had to have a firmness of 8 of 10, where 10 is the most firm.
- Had to have a performance score of 8.81 or higher.
- Had to be available for purchase within the USA.
Are You a Plus-Sized Sleeper?
If you have a heavier body over 250 lbs., but especially over 300 lbs., check our best mattress for heavy people list. HD / plus-sized mattresses are designed with more supportive materials, higher density foams, thicker profiles, and thicker wires on the coils, all of which are better tuned to the needs of heavier people.

Saatva Classic

Best For
- Exceptional cooling performance, 10/10
- Fantastic edge support for both sitting and lying
- Pressure relief is incredible with high-quality materials
Considerations
- Available in two heights—11.5″ or 14.5″ (same price)
- Higher bounce may not be ideal for all sleepers
- $99 return fee
Our Verdict
The Saatva Classic is a high-performing coil mattress that uses a pocketed coil base and a comfort layer of foam-encased coils. It is topped with a Euro-style pillow topper.
The Saatva comes in three firmness levels—Soft (3.5), Medium (5.5), and Firm (8).
In our tests of the medium version, Saatva had deep sinkage and extremely high levels of bounce. I would expect the firm version to have slightly less sinkage, but you’re still going to have a bit of contour because of the plush feel of the Euro cover. The firm version may also have a slightly higher bounce because of the extra pushback.
In our performance tests, the Saatva Classic earned an overall score of 9.68, ranking as the #2 best mattress tested to date.
It costs $1,795 for a queen mattress. Compared to over 350+ mattresses tested to date, the Saatva Classic is 22% more expensive than average. But remember, you’re also getting a mattress with significantly better performance. For reference, the average overall score is 8.54. Saatva Classic’s 9.68 is considerably better than average.

Saatva Contour5

Type: Memory Foam
Firmness: Medium-Firm (6) or Firm (8)
The Saatva Contour 5 is another firm option from Saatva. The overall score isn’t quite as high as the Classic, but still provides a solid performance level that is great for sleepers looking for a memory foam feel. This mattress has minimal sinkage and very low levels of bounce. Unlike the Saatva Classic, which encourages motion and engagement, the Contour5 is designed to limit bounce on the mattress. It’s also quite a bit more expensive, but if you like the feel of memory foam it can be worth it.
Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe

Best For
- Fantastic pressure relief with a 4.25″ comfort layer
- Fantastic cooling, a perfect score of 10 out of 10
- Response time is 0.2 seconds faster than average
Considerations
- Motion transfer is low, but also not amazing
- 120-night trial period is shorter than the 178-night average
- $99 return fee
Our Verdict
The Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe is a 13.25″ hybrid mattress with a quilted cover, infused with cooling fibers for advanced cooling performance. It has a poly foam comfort layer and a pocketed coil base for support.
This mattress is available in three firmness levels—Soft (4), Medium-Firm (6), and Firm (8).
We tested the medium version and found it to have moderate levels of both sinkage and bounce. Based on the design and the overall feel of the mattress, I would expect the firm version to have a similar feel.
In our performance test, the Aurora Luxe has an overall score 9.24, putting the mattress in the top 8% of all mattresses tested to date (over 370+ compared).
The price is 9% less expensive than the average hybrid, at $1,398 for a queen, making the Aurora Luxe a great value, given its higher performance.

Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid

Type: Hybrid
Firmness: Soft (4), Medium-Firm (6), or Firm (8)
The Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid is another great pick to consider for a high-quality hybrid mattress with a firm feel. Like the Aurora Luxe, this mattress is also available in three firmness levels—Soft (4), Medium-Firm (6), or Firm (8). Also like the Aurora Luxe, the Signature hybrid has a quilted cover and poly foam comfort layer with a pocketed coil base. This mattress has slightly less sinkage and higher levels of bounce compared to Aurora. Lastly, the Signature Hybrid is sold at a value-packed price of $999 for a queen. If you enjoy a bit more pushback and want to save $700, the Signature Hybrid is a fantastic choice.
Helix Twilight Elite

Best For
- Firm feel with exceptional pressure relief
- Standard GlacioTex cover helps create fantastic cooling
- Lying and sitting edge support are both excellent
Considerations
- Worse sex score largely due to lower-than-average bounce
- Material response is slower
- Considerably higher price than the average hybrid
Our Verdict
The Helix Twilight Elite is a 15.5″ hybrid mattress made of memory foam, poly foam, microcoils, and a pocketed coil base. It comes equipped with a cool-to-the-touch cover, zoned support, and reinforced edges. The mattress is incredibly robust, being the best-of-the-best offered by Helix.
The Helix Twilight Elite is available in a single firmness level — firm.
This mattress has very deep sinkage and low levels of bounce. While sinkage levels are deeper than average, the Twilight Elite still creates a high degree of pushback. The deeper sinakge helps make this a fantastic choice for side sleepers.
In our performance tests, this mattress earned an overall score of 9.22, ranking the mattress in the top 8% of all mattresses tested to date.
The Helix Twilight Elite is $2,999 for a queen sized mattress, which is more than double the price of an average mattress. While the asking price is steep, this is undeniably a mattress that performs considerably better than average. In addition, this mattress has incredible material quality, providing exceptional durability.

Leesa Sapira Chill

Best For
- Fantastic pressure relief with an extra thick comfort layer
- Great edge support when sitting or lying on the mattress
- Exceptional cooling performance with a cooling cover
Considerations
- Price tag is 18% more than the average hybrid
- Motion transfer levels are 43% more than average
- Mattress had a strong smell for 10 days
Our Verdict
The Leesa Sapira Chill is a hybrid mattress designed for great cooling and an active feel. It has a quilted cooling cover, poly foam comfort layer, and a pocketed coil base.
This mattress comes in three different firmness options—Soft (4), Medium-Firm (6), or Firm (8).
We tested the medium-firm version, which had moderate sinkage and high levels of bounce. I would expect the firm version to have similar levels, with slightly less sinkage. It still has a thick quilted cover (1.75″) with a more restrained feel compared to Saatva Classic or Helix Twilight Elite.
In our performance tests, the Sapira Chill earned an overall score of 9.08, ranking the mattress within the top 16% of all mattresses tested to date.
A queen mattress is $1,809, which is 18% more than the average hybrid. Like many other recommendations in this list, you’re paying more, but you’re also getting much higher performance mattress.

Novosbed

Best For
- Sleepers on a budget looking for a mattress under $1000
- Minimal sinkage and balanced body contouring hug
- Low levels of motion transfer and low bounce—classic memory foam feel
Considerations
- Low bounce negatively hurts the sex score of this mattress
- Responsiveness is fair, but also far from great
- 120-night trial is shorter than 178-night average trial
Our Verdict
The Novosbed is an 11″ memory foam mattress with a thin cover, a memory foam comfort layer, and a 7.0″ support foam base.
It is available in three firmness levels—Soft (4), Medium-Firm (6), or Firm (8).
We tested the Medium version, which has minimal sinkage and low levels of bounce. When considering how the Firm version would perform, I would expect minimal sinkage and possibly slightly more bounce, but not by much, given the nature of memory foam.
In our performance tests, the Novosbed earned an overall score 8.87, ranking in the top 30% of all mattresses tested to date. Now, before you write off Novosbed for the lower rank, let’s talk price.
The Queen Novosbed is only $999. If we consider the price of all 370+ mattresses tested to date, the savings grow—the Novosbed is 32% less expensive than the average mattress, for a savings of $477. For a firm memory foam mattress on a budget, the Novosbed is the mattress to beat.

Silk & Snow Hybrid

Best For
- Budget-Friendly at $800 for a queen
- Edge support is excellent
- Excellent pressure relief
Considerations
- Cooling performance is worse than average
- Response time is about average
Our Verdict
The Silk & Snow Hybrid is a 11.5″ hybrid mattress made of poly foam and pocketed coils. On top of it all is a 1.0″ quilted cover.
The Silk & Snow Hybrid is available in three firmness levels — soft (4.5), medium-firm (6), and firm (8).
We tested the medium-firm version, which we found has deep sinkage and high levels of bounce. We expect the firm version will have less sinkage and a similar level of bounce. This helps create a balanced feel with excellent support.
In our performance tests, this mattress earned an overall score of 8.86, ranking the mattress in the top 32% of all mattresses tested to date. But where it really shines is price.
The Silk & Snow Hybrid is $800 for a queen sized mattress, which is 46% less expensive than average. For those looking for a budget hybrid, this mattress is hard to beat.

Plank Firm

Best For
- Flippable firmness—a firm side (8) and an extra firm side (9)
- Great cooling performance
- Good pressure relief on the firm side, the extra firm side has very high levels of pushback
Considerations
- Slower material response time
- Below average bounce makes sex performance worse
- 120-night trial is shorter than the 178-night average trial
Our Verdict
The Plank Firm, by Brooklyn Bedding, is a flippable foam mattress with both a firm and extra firm feel. It is made of support foam and a latex-like poly foam. Depending on which side of the mattress you’re on will determine which layer is on “top”.
One side has a firm feel, 8 out of 10, and the opposite side has an extra-firm feel, 9 out of 10. If you want a firm mattress, but are toeing the line between a firm and extra firm mattress, the Plank can be a great pick.
The Firm side of this mattress has moderate levels of both sinkage and bounce. It has a restrained, yet balanced feel.
In our tests, the Plank earned an overall score of 8.84, scoring within the top 34% of all mattresses tested to date. Like the Novosbed, this rank isn’t the highest we’ve seen, but it’s scratching the itch of a very targeted sleeper.
The price is $999 for a queen mattress, coming in 32% less expensive than the average mattress. If you’re looking for a firm mattress with the option to flip it over for an extra firm feel, Plank is the only brand we’ve tested to date that even offers such a thing.
Note: We tested both the firm and extra firm sides of the Plank mattress and the firm side scored 8.84 while the extra firm side scored 8.40.

Amerisleep AS6 Black

Best For
- Exceptionally good pressure relief
- Fantastic edge support with only 3.25″ of sitting edge sinkage
- Cool-to-the-touch cover
Considerations
- Response time is slower
- Low bounce negatively impacts sex performance
- 79% more expensive than the average mattress we’ve tested
Our Verdict
The Amerisleep AS6 Black is a 13.5″ memory foam hybrid (designed to be 15″ thick but ours came in a bit short). It contains memory foam comfort layers and a pocketed coil base.
The Amerisleep AS6 Black is available in three firmness levels — soft (4), medium-firm (6), and firm (8). We tested the luxury firm (aka medium-firm) version, but we expect the firm to offer a similar feel with more pushback.
This mattress has moderate sinkage and very low levels of bounce. It feels like memory foam, that is to say: slower material response, less bounce, and deep contour. If you are looking for that specific memory foam feel, the AS6 Black is a fantastic choice.
In our performance tests, this mattress earned an overall score of 8.81, ranking the mattress in the top 36% of all mattresses tested to date.
The Amerisleep AS6 Black is $2,649 for a queen-sized mattress, which is 79% more expensive than average. While this mattress won’t be for everyone, especially due to the price, it offers that distinct memory foam feel and fantastic build quality.
