A mattress can be inexpensive, but still be of good quality. Or a mattress can be downright cheap—costing a cheap price, but also made of cheap, low-quality materials.

At the end of the day, most sleepers hunting on Amazon aren’t looking for a cheap, uncomfortable mattress. But rather looking for an inexpensive mattress that also has good performance.

Amazon has a wide variety of mattresses, at varying levels of quality. The best low-cost mattresses will typically skip spendy extras like high-profile thicknesses, extra comfort layers, cooling phase-change covers, and natural or organic materials.

In most cases, you want to spend at least $400 for a Queen size mattress. The performance and material quality drop off below that price point is quite severe.

The Amazon mattresses featured in this top list include a range from around $350 to $1,000 for a queen mattress.

For reference, the average cost for a mattress among all types tested to date is $1,455 for a queen-sized mattress. This considers all mattress types—foam, latex, hybrid, coil, adjustable, organic, and other specialty mattress types.

In our years of testing, we have found that foam mattresses and hybrid mattresses provide the best value in most cases.

Here are the average mattress prices for a queen-sized mattress, divided between foam and hybrid mattresses, from comparing 360+ mattresses tested to date.

  • Average foam mattress: $1,088 / queen
  • Average hybrid mattress: $1,524 / queen

For the best Amazon mattress, we’re targeting the highest performing mattresses based on our battery of objective and data-driven tests that are priced under $1000 and available directly through the Amazon marketplace.

So with all these things in mind, let’s dive in.

Each best list is put through a customized performance analysis with specialized consideration given to our objective & data-driven performance tests. In addition, we consider mattress type, design, materials, value, price, and more.

Performance Testing Factors
Performance Testing Factors

For our Best Amazon Mattress list, we based our selections on the best-scoring mattresses, according to our battery of testing and formulaic-driven scoring.

Our tests analyze performance across 8 critical factors, including cooling, motion transfer, response time, edge support, sex, pressure relief, off-gassing, and company. In addition, we also test sinkage and bounce (though these are not scoring factors).

Our tests include objective and quantifiable data whenever possible. In addition, we use subjective assessment supported by data to round out our testing process.

Our scores are based on mathematical formulas and equations that utilize inputs from our data-driven testing.

You can see our complete testing and scoring process here.

In choosing the best Amazon mattresses we looked at the totality of all of our tests, scores, data, and reviews to date. We analyzed this data alongside our established best mattress framework here.

In addition to achieving a high-performance score, all mattresses on this list have an affordable price tag.

When selecting the best Amazon mattress, we’re looking at a combination of overall scoring performance, price, and US availability.

To be included within this list all mattresses:

  • Had to cost $1,000 or less for a Queen mattress.
  • Had to have a firmness between 5-6 out of 10.
  • Had to have a performance score of 8.45 or higher.
  • Had to be available for purchase in a Queen size.
  • Had to be available for purchase on Amazon.

Considerations

  • Off-gassing is average, takes about a week
  • 13.5″ thick may not work for low-profile aesthetics

The DreamCloud Premier Hybrid is a 13.50″ hybrid mattress made of memory foam, transitional poly foam, pocketed coils, and support foam. The hybrid design provides better performance than many comparable foam mattresses, while still offering a value price.

The DreamCloud Premier Hybrid is available in a single firmness level — medium-firm, which is a 6 out of 10 on our firmness scale. This firmness works well for most body types and sleeping positions.

This mattress has moderate sinkage and low levels of bounce, giving the DreamCloud a balanced feel.

Best For

  • Very low levels of motion transfer
  • Fast material response time
  • Great cooling with a thin cover that is breathable and limits heat

Considerations

  • Lower sex score may not be ideal for couples (largely due to lower bounce)
  • Edge support is weaker than average, largely due to its all-foam design

Our Verdict

The Leesa Original is a 10″ foam mattress made of poly foam, memory foam, and support foam. Unlike the DreamCloud, which is a hybrid, the Leesa does not contain any coils.

The Leesa Original is available in a single firmness level — medium-firm, which is a 6 out of 10 on our firmness scale, where 10 is the most firm. This firmness is suitable for a wide range of sleepers and provides a nice balance of support and pressure relief.

This mattress has moderate sinkage and low levels of bounce. While low bounce doesn’t do any favors for sex performance, it does help provide very low levels of motion transfer.

In our performance tests, this mattress earned an overall score of 9.00, ranking the mattress in the top 21% of all mattresses tested to date. When we look exclusively at foam mattresses, that rank rises to the top 15%.

If you’re looking for a foam mattress under $1000, the Leesa Original is the mattress to beat on Amazon.

Best For

  • Exceptional cooling performance
  • Fantastic pressure relief and a thicker comfort layer than average
  • Lower levels of motion transfer, great for couples

Considerations

  • Sex performance struggles thanks to lower levels of bounce
  • Response time is slightly slower than the average mattress
  • 14″ profile may not be right for low-profile aesthetics

Our Verdict

The Brooklyn Bedding CopperFlex Pro Hybrid is a 14.50″ memory foam hybrid mattress made of memory foam, a transitional poly foam, a pocketed coil core, and a support foam base. It has a thicker profile than most other mattresses featured on this list.

The Brooklyn Bedding CopperFlex Pro Hybrid is available in a single firmness level — medium-firm, which is a 6 out of 10 firmness, where 10 is the most firm. The plush quilted cover gives the mattress a luxury feel, while still offering Amazon convenience.

This mattress has moderate sinkage and low levels of bounce. As a memory foam hybrid, the CopperFlex Pro has a more dramatic contour, excellent pressure relief, and a slower response time.

In our performance tests, this mattress earned an overall score of 8.97, ranking the mattress in the top 24% of all mattresses tested to date.

Considering its thicker profile, the CopperFlex is a fantastic deal for sleepers looking for a plush quilted cover and deeper contour.

Best Soft or Firm

Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid 2024 Reading

Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid

As an honorable mention, I would also like to highlight the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid here. While the Signature Hybrid’s overall performance score does not beat the CopperFlex, it has the advantage of being available in three firmness levels—Soft (4), Medium-Firm (6), and Firm (8). If you need a soft or firm mattress from Amazon, this mattress is my top pick.

  • Pressure relief is great, especially for side sleepers
  • Fantastic edge support for sitting or lying at or near the edge

Considerations

  • Slower material response time
  • Off-gassing is right at the average level (7 days)
  • Sex performance is average as well, with only moderate levels of bounce

Our Verdict

The Helix Midnight is a 12″ hybrid mattress with a foam-encased quilted cover, memory foam, poly foam, and a pocketed coil base. This mattress is the base-level collection from Helix and a great option for under $1K.

The Helix Midnight is available in a single firmness level — medium-firm, which is a 6 out of 10, where 10 is the most firm. Helix has many other models at varying firmness levels, but the Midnight is the most popular because of its balanced feel, making it the best choice for most sleepers.

This mattress has moderate sinkage and moderate levels of bounce.

In our performance tests, this mattress earned an overall score of 8.73, ranking the mattress in the top 42% of all mattresses tested to date.

For a hybrid with excellent performance and an optional cooling cover, the Midnight is a great pick to consider.

Considerations

  • Mattress had a strong smell for about a week

Our Verdict

The Awara is an 11.50″ latex hybrid mattress made of natural latex foam and pocketed coils. This is the first natural mattress to make our top Amazon list and features GOLS-certified latex.

The Awara is available in a single firmness level — medium-firm, which is a 6 out of 10 on our firmness scale, where 10 is the most firm. Like the other mattresses on this list, a medium-firm feel is the most popular and a great pick for most sleepers and body types.

This mattress has moderate sinkage and moderate levels of bounce. Bounce is just slightly higher than average, which provides better sex performance (8.7) compared to the average (8.3).

In our performance tests, this mattress earned an overall score of 8.69, ranking the mattress in the top 47% of all mattresses tested to date.

  • Excellent pressure relief
  • Fantastic cooling with limited heat retention

Considerations

  • Edge support is weaker when sitting or lying near the edge
  • Higher levels of motion transfer
  • Sex performance is lacking due to low bounce and weaker edge support

Our Verdict

The Nectar Premier is a 13.00″ memory foam mattress made of memory foam, transitional poly foam, and a support foam base. If you want to skip coils altogether, the Nectar is a great pick with a classic memory foam design.

The Nectar Premier is available in a single firmness level — medium, which is a 5 out of 10 on our firmness scale, where 10 is the most firm. This is a touch softer than many other mattresses featured on this list, but it would still be suitable for a range of sleepers.

This mattress has moderate sinkage and low levels of bounce. It has a more dramatic contour, typical of traditional memory foam mattresses.

In our performance tests, this mattress earned an overall score of 8.62, ranking the mattress in the bottom 45% of all mattresses tested to date. But when we exclusively look at memory foam mattresses, the rank rises to the top 39%.

Best For

  • Great pressure relief
  • Below average levels of motion transfer
  • Fast material response time

Considerations

  • Sex performance is notably worse than average, primarily due to lower bounce
  • Longer off-gassing duration (9 days)
  • Cooling is good, but could definitely be better

Our Verdict

The Tuft & Needle Mint (Enhanced Mint) is an 11.75″ foam mattress made of poly foam, memory foam, and a support foam base. It is pretty basic and skips advanced features like zoned support or reinforced edges.

The Tuft & Needle Mint is available in a single firmness level — medium-firm, which is a 6 out of 10 on our firmness scale, where 10 is the most firm. This is a popular firmness and would work well for the majority of sleepers.

This mattress has minimal sinkage and low levels of bounce. The all-foam construction gives this mattress a balanced feel, but it’s not going to provide any type of “cloud-like” feel.

In our performance tests, this mattress earned an overall score of 8.49, ranking the Mint in the bottom 37% of all mattresses tested to date. But what it lacks in performance, it may make up for in price.

For a foam mattress on a budget, the Tuft & Needle Mint checks a lot of boxes, assuming you understand and are okay with its shortcomings.

Best For

  • Low motion transfer makes it a great choice for couples
  • Queen mattress under $500
  • Fast material response – less likely to feel stuck

Considerations

  • Less than great for sex performance
  • Good but not great cooling
  • Good but not great pressure relief

Our Verdict

The SweetNight CoolNest is a 15.5″ foam mattress made of 5 distinct layers that include memory foam, poly foam, and a base support foam. The base and top poly foam include channels cut into the foam, to help with zoned support and breathability.

The SweetNight Coolnest is available in three different thicknesses — 12″, 14″, and 16″ (we measured 15.5″ for 16″ version). All versions come in a medium firmness rating that is a 5 out of 10 on the firmness scale, where 10 is the most firm.

This mattress has moderate sinkage and low levels of bounce. It has a fairly dramatic hug, largely due to its foam design + memory foam comfort layer. While the feel of the mattress is lively for smaller movements, likely switching from back to side, the lower bounce makes larger movements, like intimacy, more difficult.

In our performance tests, this mattress earned an overall score of 8.47, ranking the mattress in the bottom 36% of all mattresses tested to date. Notably, this reflects tests on the 16″ version.

Whichever version you choose, the CoolNest is a solid value Amazon mattress under $600 for a Queen.

Best For

  • Extremely responsive memory foam so you’ll never feel stuck
  • Excellent edge support for both sitting and lying
  • Ultra-low price, under $400 for queen

Considerations

  • Higher motion transfer levels than average
  • Low bounce levels are not great for sex performance
  • Pressure relief is good, but has clear room for improvement

Our Verdict

The Siena Signature 12″ is a 12″ foam mattress made of memory foam, poly foam, and support foam, all wrapped in a thin, breathable cover. The top foam is primarily for comfort, while the poly foam serves more as a transitional layer between the memory foam and the support layer below.

The Siena is available in a single firmness level — medium-firm. This is a rating of 6 out of 10, where 10 is the most firm.

This mattress has minimal sinkage and very low levels of bounce. Despite its classification as a memory foam, the 2″ topmost foam layer acts more like a poly foam that hugs around your body much less dramatically than a classic memory foam would.

In our performance tests, this mattress earned an overall score of 8.45, which ranks this mattress in the bottom 35% of all mattresses tested. While this performance may not overly impress, its price is the real incentive here.

The Siena Signature 12″ is under $400 for a queen. Could cooling and pressure relief be better? Absolutely. Even so, given the incredibly budget-friendly price point makes it a compelling option for many sleepers.
