Each best list is put through a customized performance analysis with specialized consideration given to our objective & data-driven performance tests. In addition, we consider mattress type, design, materials, value, price, and more.

Performance Categories

For our Best Affordable Mattress list, we based our selections on the best-scoring mattresses, according to our battery of testing and formulaic-driven scoring. In addition, all mattresses we considered had to be under $1,000 for a Queen.

Our tests analyze performance across 8 critical factors, including cooling, motion transfer, response time, edge support, sex, pressure relief, off-gassing, and company. In addition, we also test sinkage and bounce (though these are not scoring factors).

Our tests include objective and quantifiable data whenever possible. In addition, we use subjective assessment supported by data to round out our testing process.

Our scores are based on mathematical formulas and equations that utilize inputs from our data-driven testing.

You can see our complete testing and scoring process here.

In choosing the best affordable mattress we looked at the totality of all of our tests, scores, data, and reviews to date. We analyzed this data alongside our established best mattress framework here.

When selecting the best affordable mattress winners, we’re looking at a combination of overall scoring performance, price, firmness, and US availability.

To be included within our best affordable mattress list each mattress needed to:

  • Have a performance score of 8.86 or higher
  • Have a firmness between 4-7 out of 10, where 10 is the most firm. This ranges from soft to slightly firm.
  • Be priced at less than $1,000 for a Queen
  • Be available for purchase within the USA
  • Latex and latex hybrid mattresses were limited to the top 2 picks by score. Latex has a polarizing feel that some love and some hate. It’s a far more polarizing feel than poly foam or memory foam. See our best latex mattresses list for more.

We’re also thinking about mattress type, as different mattress types have different average price points. For reference, here is the average price for a queen mattress on some of the most popular mattress types:

  • Average coil mattress: $1,022
  • Average memory foam mattress: $1,016
  • Average foam mattress: $1,125
  • Average hybrid mattress: $1,526
  • Average memory foam hybrid mattress: $1,628
  • Average latex hybrid mattress: $1,935
  • Average plus-sized mattress: $1,863
  • Average adjustable mattress: $2,812
  • Average specialty mattress: $2,393

Considering our price cap of only $1,000, every mattress featured in our best affordable mattress list has a price point that is less than average for its respective mattress type.

Best For

  • Exceptional cooling from an ultra-breathable cover with a cool-to-the-touch feel
  • Outstanding pressure relief with 4″ of memory foam with more of a modern feel
  • Low motion transfer – great for sleeping next to a partner

Considerations

  • Slightly less responsive feel than average
  • Lowest sex score on this list due to lower bounce
  • $99 return fee

Our Verdict

The Brooklyn Bedding CopperFlex Pro Hybrid is a 14.5″ memory foam hybrid mattress made of 2 thick memory foam layers, poly foam, a pocketed coil unit, and a support foam base. For its cover, we see a 1.25″ thick quilted layer that has a hexagonal stitching pattern and uses materials designed to pull heat away from you as you sleep.

The Brooklyn Bedding CopperFlex Pro Hybrid is available in a single firmness level — medium-firm. This is also a 6 out of 10, where 10 is the most firm.

This mattress has moderate sinkage and low levels of bounce. It provides a feel that lies on the border of dramatic and balanced. This formulation of memory foam is more modern, making it quicker to respond and includes copper to aid in cooling performance.

Its affordability is shocking to see from such a thick design. The 7″ comfort layer is practically unheard of at this price point. Furthermore, 4″ of memory foam is much more than most memory foam hybrids, not to mention its quality and overall price.

In our performance tests, this mattress earned an overall score of 8.97, ranking the mattress in the top 24% of all mattresses tested to date.

The Brooklyn Bedding CopperFlex Pro Hybrid is $999 for a queen-sized mattress, which is 32% less than the average mattress. Compared to just memory foam hybrids, the CopperFlex saves even more by being 39% less than average. Altogether, this is a fantastic option, especially if you prioritize good cooling.

  • Reinforced edge with two rows of extra-strong coils on sides
  • Excellent pressure relief from 4″ comfort layer

Considerations

  • Cooling is good, but not amazing
  • Low bounce negatively impacts sex performance
  • Slower material recovery speed

Our Verdict

The Glacier Original is a 12″ hybrid mattress made of gel memory foam, poly foam, and an 8″ pocketed coil unit. Its cover is quilted and includes a thin layer of graphite-infused memory foam to help with cooling.

The Glacier Original is available in a single firmness level — medium-firm.

This mattress has moderate sinkage and low levels of bounce. Its classic memory foam feel limits bounce, but the thicker poly foam layer balances out its contour from being too exacting around the body.

The Glacier Original includes nicer design elements like infused memory foam to aid in cooling, zoned lumbar support, and reinforced edge coils that are surprising at this price point. The quilting in the cover is also a nice touch that is unexpected at this level.

In our performance tests, this mattress earned an overall score of 8.95, ranking the mattress in the top 25% of all mattresses tested to date.

The Glacier Original is $799 for a queen-sized mattress, which is 46% less than average. For a 12″ hybrid, this is an incredible deal, and Glacier offers two upgraded versions, the Summit and Apex, if you find your budget can stretch a little further.

Best For

  • Fantastic pressure relief despite 10″ total height
  • Great cooling from its hybrid design and Energex poly foam
  • Excellent sex performance due to higher bounce

Considerations

  • Deeper sinkage levels may not be to everyone’s preference
  • Fairly high motion transfer – not terrible, but not great either
  • Edge support is good, but also not incredible

Our Verdict

The Boring Hybrid is a 10″ hybrid mattress made of poly foam, pocketed coils, and a support foam base.

The Boring Hybrid is available in a single firmness level — medium-firm. This is a rating of 6 out of 10, where 10 is the most firm.

This mattress has deep sinkage and high levels of bounce. This includes a balanced body contour and a more restrained hug.

The reason the Boring Hybrid is so affordable comes down to its thin, simple design. Where the average mattress has a 12.2″ thickness, this mattress uses a thinner pocketed coil unit and less comfort foam that totals only 10″. Yet, it still achieves great performance, although its thin design is less suitable for heavier bodies (over 250 lbs.)

In our performance tests, this mattress earned an overall score of 8.93, ranking the mattress in the top 27% of all mattresses tested to date and only slightly behind the 2nd and 3rd spots on this list.

The Boring Hybrid is $799 for a queen-sized mattress, which makes it tied with the Glacier Original for the lowest-priced mattresses on this list. Overall, the Boring is exactly what they claim – simple, but with solid performance. If you’re under 250 lbs., this is a fantastic option.

Best For

  • Near instantaneous responsiveness from latex hybrid design
  • Excellent pressure relief that is suitable for all weights and sleeping positions
  • Low price for a latex hybrid

Considerations

  • Fairly high motion due to increased bounce and latex foam
  • Return fee of $99

Our Verdict

The Latex Mattress Factory Luxerion Hybrid is a 12″ latex hybrid mattress made of an organic cotton cover, 3″ of perforated Talalay latex, a pocketed coil unit, and a base support foam.

The Latex Mattress Factory Luxerion Hybrid is available in a single firmness level — medium-firm.

This mattress has moderate sinkage and moderate levels of bounce. The feel of the Luxerion is largely created by the single 3″ latex layer, which creates a more generalized hug around the body.

Latex hybrids are one of the most expensive mattress types. For the Luxerion Hybrid to be so affordable, we can point to the limited 3″ comfort layer, thinner than average 6.5″ coil unit, and more simple design.

In our performance tests, this mattress earned an overall score of 8.88, ranking the mattress in the 29% of all mattresses tested to date. If we look at latex hybrids, which perform better on average, it still ranks within the top 36%.

The Latex Mattress Factory Luxerion Hybrid is $979 for a queen-sized mattress, which is 33% less than the average mattress. Furthermore, it’s nearly half the price of the average latex hybrid. Overall, the Luxerion is an incredible opportunity to try out a latex hybrid for a fraction of the typical price.

Best For

  • Extremely low levels of motion transfer, which is great for sharing a bed
  • Excellent cooling for an all-foam design
  • Dramatic hug around bodies without too much sinkage

Considerations

  • Lower bounce and all foam design means sex isn’t great
  • Slower material response time
  • Edge support is good, but not amazing

Our Verdict

The Novosbed is a memory foam mattress with a 4″ comfort layer and 7″ support layer. It has three layers of memory foam that make up the complete comfort layer and has great pressure relief.

The Novosbed mattress comes in three firmness levels—Soft (4), Medium-Firm (6), or Firm (8). This wide firmness range makes it a good choice for many sleep preferences.

This mattress has minimal sinkage and low levels of bounce, maintaining that classic memory foam feel. It won’t leave you feeling stuck, but it does offer high hug and contour.

The reason the Novosbed is so affordable is largely due to its all-foam design. This mattress is able to achieve fantastic results through the smart use of different kinds of memory foam on top of a support foam base.

In our performance tests, Novosbed had an overall score of 8.87, ranking it in the top 30% of all mattresses tested to date. However, it’s ranked in the top 5% if we look exclusively at memory foam mattresses.

It’s even cheaper, too. A queen-sized Novosbed is only $999—2% less than the average memory foam mattress. And considering all mattress types, the Novosbed is 32% less than average. This means price savings across the board without any notable performance disadvantages. If you love the feel of all-foam mattresses, this is a solid, affordable pick for couples.

Best For

  • Exceptional pressure relief, despite only having a 3.0″ comfort layer
  • Very low levels of motion transfer, only 4.02 m/s²
  • Excellent cooling performance

Considerations

  • Very slow material response time (1.2 seconds)
  • Deep sinkage may not be ideal for back or stomach sleepers
  • Slightly less bounce than average hurts the sex score

Our Verdict

The Zoma Hybrid makes the list for best affordable mattress thanks to its budget price and above-average performance. This mattress is a 12″ hybrid mattress with a mix of memory foam, poly foam, and pocketed coils for support.

This mattress comes in one firmness, 5 out of 10, which gives the mattress a medium feel. This feel is suitable for a wide range of sleepers, being especially beneficial for side sleepers.

The Zoma Hybrid has a moderate level of bounce (9.01″, slightly more than average) and deep sinkage. A top layer of gel memory foam provides good contour to sleepers of any sleeping position.

The Zoma Hybrid packs a lot of value into an under $1,000 mattress. To have both zoned support coils and reinforced edges is rare at this price point. While it would be nice to see an extra inch of comfort material, the dense 2″ memory foam layer, combined with the above features, creates outstanding pressure relief.

The overall performance score of the Zoma Hybrid is 8.86. Looking at the 360+ mattresses tested to date, the Zoma performs in the top 32% of all mattresses tested to date. Among hybrids, the Zoma ranks in the top 38%.

The Zoma Hybrid mattress costs $974 for a queen, which is 36% less expensive than the average hybrid ($1525) , a savings of $551. If you’re on a very tight budget, but want the performance and feel of a hybrid, the Zoma does not disappoint.

Best For

  • Fast material response due to poly foam comfort layer
  • Great edge support for sitting or lying
  • Fantastic pressure relief, especially given the price point

Considerations

  • Cooling is good, but not great—moderate levels of heat retention
  • Higher levels of bounce, may not be ideal for all sleepers
  • Average material response time

Our Verdict

The Silk & Snow Hybrid is an 11.5″ hybrid with a very budget-friendly price and one of the best affordable mattresses we’ve tested to date. This mattress is made of poly foam, pocketed coils, and a 1.0″ quilted cover.

The Silk & Snow Hybrid is available in 3 firmness levels, soft, medium-firm, and firm. We tested the medium-firm, which we rate at a 6 out of 10 on our firmness scale, where 10 is the most firm. Medium-firm is ideal for most body types, but it’s great that Silk & Snow offers a soft and firm option as well.

This mattress creates a deeper level of sinkage and high bounce. This kind of feel is best suited for sleepers looking for deeper contour, which is especially beneficial for side sleepers.

From an affordability standpoint, the Silk & Snow Hybrid stretches every penny into the 11.5″ design that includes a nice quilted cover and zoned pocketed coil unit (providing more support in the middle of the mattress). On the other hand, it only has 3.00″ of comfort material, which is a bit thinner than the 4.26″ average.

In our performance tests, the Silk & Snow Hybrid had a score of 8.86, which ranks it in the top 32% of all hybrids tested and in the top 38% if we compare all mattress types (over 360+ mattresses tested to date).

One of the biggest advantages of the Silk & Snow Hybrid is the price. This mattress comes in at only $800 for a queen, making it an exceptional value, being $725 less than the average hybrid ($1,525). Looking at the mattresses that outperform Silk & Snow, very few of them do so with a lower price tag.
