There are several mattress brands we’re all familiar with, such as Tempur-Pedic, Serta, Sleep Number, and Nectar, to name a few. But for something so crucial to our daily well-being, many might not realize that most popular mattress brands are owned by just a handful of major companies.
Like in any industry, the companies selling us our night’s rest have gone through mergers and acquisitions, so what seems like a wide variety of choices is often just a few big names. In this report from NapLab, we’re peeking under the covers to show who’s really behind the mattress brands most people recognize.

Somnigroup International
Somnigroup International, formerly known as Tempur Sealy International, is one of the largest mattress companies in the world, thanks to a series of acquisitions. The company built its reputation through Tempur-Pedic, the brand that made memory foam mainstream. Today, Somnigroup oversees several mattress manufacturers and has a notable presence across the global mattress industry.
Tempur-Pedic is still the heart of the business, but other big names like Sealy, Stearns & Foster, Sherwood Bedding, and Sleepy’s fall under their umbrella as well. Somnigroup’s controversial acquisition of the abundant network of Mattress Firm stores further broadened its reach and created one of the most expansive and influential footprints in the mattress business.
Ashley Global Retail
Ashley Global Retail turned heads when it scooped up the Resident Home family of brands, giving the furniture retailer’s Ashley Sleep line a direct line into the somewhat competitive online mattress arena.
With the mattress company merger, Nectar, DreamCloud, Awara, and Siena officially joined the roster, instantly expanding Ashley’s standing among major mattress companies. Together, these brands give Ashley Global Retail a surprisingly wide range of products for customers across a spectrum of income brackets.
3Z Brands
3Z Brands has quickly grown from a small manufacturer into a mattress bigwig, collecting some of the most recognizable direct-to-consumer names along the way. The group now includes Helix Sleep, Brooklyn Bedding, Bear, Leesa, and Nolah, giving 3Z a robust showing of mattress brands with strong followings.
With brands like Helix, which built its reputation on customization, 3Z Brands can offer customers a spectrum of preferences, which is exactly why it has become one of the biggest players in sleep.
Saatva Inc.
Saatva Inc. joined forces with Bedding Industries of America in 2023, giving the company a firm foothold in both online retail and brick-and-mortar sales. Saatva began as an online-only brand, boasting long-lasting, high-quality materials and a stress-free, money-back-guaranteed shopping experience.
The merger added heritage names like Eclipse, Eastman House, Millbrook, and Ernest Hemingway to the mix. These brands have decades of mattress-making experience, which helps give the younger brand a boost in reputation thanks to the well-respected craftsmanship of Bedding Industries of America.
The Flex Bedding Group
The Spanish company Flex Bedding Group strengthened its position in the luxury category by acquiring E.S. Kluft & Co., adding some of the most meticulously crafted mattresses to its portfolio. Originally known throughout Europe, Flex used this acquisition to cement its footprint in the North American high-end market.
Aireloom and Kluft stand out as two of the most artisanal brands under the Flex umbrella, along with Marshall Mattress and Vispring. While Flex may not be a household name in mattresses, its high-priced brands let it easily compete with the heavy hitters in the trade.
Serta Simmons Bedding LLC
Serta Simmons Bedding (SSB) is one of North America’s largest mattress manufacturers, owning and managing some of the oldest and most widely recognized names in the mattress industry.
The Simmons brand dates back to 1870, and Serta followed in 1931. SSB was ultimately formed when Simmons and National Bedding Company (which had consolidated with Serta) joined under one corporate entity in 2010. Now, the company is home to Serta, Simmons, Beautyrest, and Tuft & Needle, making for one of the most recognizable mattress brands in North America.
GoodMorning.com
GoodMorning.com, previously known as Novosbed, is a Canadian e-commerce company that has been selling mattresses online since its founding in 2009. The company is credited with inventing the in-home sleep trial, which allowed customers to purchase a mattress online and test it for 100 days at home with a money-back guarantee.
In 2019, the brand changed its name to GoodMorning.com in response to its expanding catalogue of mattress brands at varying price points. While the majority of their manufacturing and sales are in Canada, they do produce some products in the United States, and the group includes the brands Douglas, Octave, Logan & Cove, and Juno.
The Current State of the Mattress Industry
While only a handful of parent companies control the majority of familiar mattress brands, there’s still a surprising number of options, spanning everything from budget-level models to high-priced luxury. With so many choices, it’s sometimes difficult to find what will give you your best night’s rest.
If you want to explore mattress brands in more detail and find the one that fits your sleep style, NapLab is here to guide you. Our in-depth mattress reviews, expert testing, and helpful tools make it easier to compare models before you buy. Start your search today with confidence and clarity.
